Comedian Dave Allen has died at the age of 68, his agent said today.

The Irishman died in his sleep at his west London home last night.

Allen became a star through his routines delivered as he sat on a stool, often while sipping a drink or smoking a cigarette. He enjoyed success with like Tonight With Dave Allen and Dave Allen At Large.

He leaves a wife, Karin, and three children.

He was most famous for his dry-humoured TV shows Tonight With Dave Allen and Dave Allen at Large.

Allen got his first break on a BBC talent show in 1959, and toured with the Beatles in the UK and France.

"Goodnight and may your God be with you ! "

R.I.P , I remeber him well , Bloody funny man . Hope they repeat his shows on BBC2 .

    "DOOR OPEN" " DOOR CLOSED"....

Christ, he was the first comedian I ever really loved to watch and I'm only 24 so it says a lot for his comedy. He is a huge loss.

    Rest in peace good man.

Same here. I can remember being allowed stay up late to see him on telly.

    "SAFETY BELT"

    He'll be missed.

Sorry to hear that. He was one of those comedian you either loved him or hated him. I thought he wa brilliant. He was the fore runner to the aternative comedian with his risque( for the time )topics and language.

    R.I.P

Meeee toooo!!! :D I used to be allowed to stay up late when I was really schmall to see him (about 25ish years ago). God! I feel decrepit!
My parents are quite straight laced but they always enjoyed Dave Allen.
A great man. I really enjoyed his dry humour. He'll be missed.

Btw, didn't he first start off his working life as a carpenter?... isn't that why he was missing a finger or two?

He told the story one night of how he lost the half the finger, if you haven't heard it, I won't spoil it but it was a CLASSIC!
Let's hope they repeat some of his shows from the late 70's now.

"Don't mourn for me now, don't mourn for me never - I'm going to do nothing for ever and ever (what Allen said he would like to have inscribed on his tombstone) "

He will be sadly missed! One of the first comedians to joke and question about what happens in real life.

"If it's sent by ship then it's a cargo, if it's sent by road then it's a shipment."

And I really did always like his goodbye, very original!

"Goodnight, thank you, and may your God go with you"

Another sad loss and an increasing worry for my mother, she commented that all her contempories are dying off (Peel, Vance, etc)!

Holy crap, mike65, I didn't know Tommy Vance had died until you mentioned it there. Did a quick Google search and was shocked to see that he died on Sunday. Was it even reported anywhere, on the telly or whatever, because I didn't know until you mentioned it there in your post. Now there was a guy who had a fantastic voice. The ads for 'American Chopper' on the Discovery Channel just won't sound the same anymore without him doing the voiceover and saying stuff like "spend a whole Sunday worshipping at the altar of chrome!" :(

God, between John Peel and Tommy Vance, seems all the good DJ's are dropping like flies these days. Just goes to show there's no justice in the world, especially when the likes of Ryan Tubridy are still clogging up the airwaves.

As for Dave Allen, fan-bloody-tastic comedian. Haven't seen him on the telly or anything in years but I remember seeing him years ago and he was great. Like some of the others here, I hope they repeat some of his old shows on the telly again in the coming weeks.

Dave, R.I.P. good sir, and may your God go with you.

A true great. I think he'd find it funny though, that every obituary about him is likely to be entitled "Goodnight Dave, and may your God go with you" - he was an atheist (Thank God).

    RIP.
