Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

since you all seem to know most of the cars out here, and I could fill thread after thread with the most obscure one-offs and low production specials, but this could become a bit tedious for some of us.

So I thought I'd do it slightly different this time around by showing you a small section of a classic car... See if you all know what it's from.

Let's start with an easy-peasy one

    300SL Gullwing !

Or then again it could be a 190SL.......I'll go with the former !

Noits a 190Sl ......just noticed the chrome trim above the "eyebrows".

    Nissan Figaro :D

    Hmmm.

I first thought an old Jag - but no...

Is it an Austin Healy?? Pleeeease say it is so... :D

I would have been pretty baffled if you didn't get this mercmad !!! Well done. It's indeed the slightly sluggish "older brother" of your 230SL, the 190SL. But at least I got you doubting with the 300SL.

So let's move on to a perhaps slightly more unusual one:

    Opel Rekord C

You can't disguise those wannabe american lines.
If the Capri was a Euro Mustang, this must have been the Euro Charger.

TATA .........Russian-built car. Not sure of exact model number/name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,309 ✭✭✭✭alastair

Near enough. It's a Tatra T603. Czech manufacturer.

That Tatra killed more German Officers than the Czech army did, with its rear engine it caught many a driver off guard, especially in the winter and most of them ended up in fields. Just a bit of useless info. for you. :D

Right you guys, you lot are too good! Let's make the challenge a bit more daunting:

Feast your eyes on this and give me some clues...

    mysterycar_6.jpg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,309 ✭✭✭✭alastair

Is that actually RHD, or is it flipped?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 827 ✭✭✭PaulK_CCI

it's a RHD, correct (very rare though).

Owner wants 55,000 euro's for it ;) but don't worry you won't find any adds for it on the internet, because it's through my source in .... oops ... abroad.

Let's first hear a few more guesses before I start giving away more clues

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,309 ✭✭✭✭alastair

    Has me stumped I'm afraid.
It looks Italian though, or possibly French.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

    Alfa Romeo perhaps ?

Yeah was thinking Alfa or Fiat

Hintyhint please, I'm not going to do a Denzel search ever again ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 827 ✭✭✭PaulK_CCI

    well ok, it's French actually...

    there...

making it real easy now, because that narrows it down quite a bit :)

Its a Jensen of some sort?

    no, no, no.... :)

you're going to have to move a bit more upmarket than that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

    'French'......'upmarket' :confused::D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,309 ✭✭✭✭alastair

    I'd considered a Facel-Vega, but I don't recall a model with that forward facing c-pillar and fins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 827 ✭✭✭PaulK_CCI

good guess, but it's not a facel-vega Alastair.

To help you along a bit, have a look at the complete car:

    mysterycar_completepic.jpg

The car is from 1957, and a very interesting hint is its engine: it's a tuned version of the 2,5 litre 4 cylinder from a well-know German manufacturer :)

Ah. Here's one; a Talbot-Lago. New to me I'm afraid. Looks kinda like an overgrown MGA.

Does it not have the 2.5 liter BMW V8?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,309 ✭✭✭✭alastair

Right. Here's another. It's not a flipped pic, it's post-war, and the rear window opens on this mystery contestant. There's a BMW connection here too.

well done alastair ! Another cigar for you. It's a Talbot-Lago LS 14 (America).

Hard to imagine that this great marque of exclusive quality vehicles amalgamated in the Simca/Talbot/Chrysler soup of horrid saloons and compact cars of the seventies, and worse still, the eighties ;). So it's not only the Brits who made a b***s of their heritage in the seventies and eighties. At least the British makes have undergone some sort of resurrection...

Unkel: the engine is a 4 cylinder 2,5 litre 120bhp. Talbo-Lago's were indeed fitted with the Famous v8 from the BMW 507, but this engine has a displacement of 3,1 litre!

Alastair, I know exactly what car it is, but I will keep the other guessing for a while (you shouldnt have mentioned the BMW heritage :D )

    The 1956 2.5l T14 LS is a 4 pot, the 1957 2.5l America has a BMW V8 :)

Here's another. Produced by a top 10 European manufacturer. Hint is license

Paul is too good. He is not allowed to guess this or even comment :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

well, I reckon the licence number is Dutch.

........as for the make of car

It's not a Dutch car. Mainstream European manufacturer as said before

Hint: what Dutch licenses start with AA?

'Royal' Dutch licence plates start with AA.

    still doesn't help me

I really hate it when I recognise a rear end but can't put a name to her - it!

    Its a 60s Fiat is'nt it?

    Mike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

Yeah, I was thinking Fiat 124 ............... but the lights look different than any 124 I have seen........... unless it's a 124 Coupe ?

No but it is a coupe. Royal plates is right :)

Final hint: it was a gift

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

    Hmmm...........Fiat ?

(P.S. - The 'Royal' plates wasn't much help to most - I just happened to have a book which lists Dutch plates).

Ah now feed your friend on the interweb with the words "fiat" and "coupe" and one other word. Your friends' first answer is the mystery car

It is not so hard to find the third word now given all the hints and especially the connections prompted by Silvera

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! :)

    2300 S Coupe.
