Which USB/Firewire External Drive?

I got an external drive case that you can pop any IDE drive into, just posted a link looking for back up software for it , it was about 40 euro ex vat and i paid about 55 euro for an 80 Gb drive. Its usb 2 and very easy to use. If its a new harddrive you just have to go through the process of pratitioning it , takes about 2 minutes then your flying. it will also take your old hard drives the old 5gb etc giving them a bit of an extension of life. I have seen the drives for $13 but unsure about the site.
I am also hoping to use norton ghost to upgrade my C drive on an older pc i have to a new drive should save alot of hastle as i can pop the new drive into the case as per your option 3 , then i back up the old c drive to it and then pop the new drive into the old PC. This is something option 1 and 2 cant do

Personally i wouldn't go with maxtor. Up until very recently they only offered 2 year warrenty (or was it 1 year?) on their harddrives, whereas all other manufacturers offered 3+ years.

Now, have they improved the quality of their drives, or are they deciding just to match their competitors? I don't know, but its enough of a reason for me to avoid them.

Agreed - I've always found Seagates to be quiet, cool and reliable. Maxtors seem reliable - but they sure aren't cool or quiet.
