I assume he asked the "dumbsh1t" for a 28 then and that probably is in youth sizes. Below a 34 isnt and I doubt even the Americans would argue that!

And I stand by my original point. I was in the bt2 sales and they had v few jeans below a 36 but that was because they were selling much better.

Being overweight dramatically increases the chances of women on the pill getting pregnant, scientists revealed today.

A woman who is overweight or obese is 60 percent to 70 percent more likely to conceive while taking an oral contraceptive than one who is slim, researchers found.

The reason for the higher pregnancy risk is not fully understood, but may be linked to the way contraceptive drugs are processed in people with excess body fat.

Maybe it's due to the fact that fat birds are sdesperate and will score anything! LOL

    (cue: you'd know - lol - hilarity)

Knew this kid when I was growing up. Tubby, so he was. Lived in Dublin so he did.
At 14, he was 13stone. By the time he was 20, he was 17 stone. Poor bas**rd has epilepsy now, and can’t drive because of his weight.

Is it not the epilepsy keeping him from driving

Your right there (Thanks), he was driving before his first attack..he was also a barman. Suited to the job as well. :p

Seriously, I think some people in this country do think that being overweight is ok. I am 6'5" maybe 6'6" and I weigh a little less than 16 stone . I have had conversations with people that are thinner and fatter than me that say that I am not fat, but I am. It just seems that people have become so used to it by now that they don't even notice that I am probably 3 stone over weight!

By the way, a question for you all... Has anyone ever seen a person in McDonalds, KFC or Burger King that doesn't have 20%+ body fat?! I don't think I have.

I've been awake 24 hours and read the title as "Most Irish people are BEAT".

That would have been quite an achievement...

err, what are you talking about.. 6ft 5 and 16 stone is NOT overweight.. i'm the same height and about 19st,, THAT is overweight:D

*slaps his belly and watches it jiggle*

    Yup, definately fat. :D

I think the proper weight for someone that is 6'5"/6'6" is around 13-14 stone, afaik.

most irish people are too releaxed when it comes to their weight. And that will inevitably lead to us becoming more "american" in size over time. Attitudes and education needs to change now.

I lost over 2 stone last year to bring me from over 12 stone to just under 10 stone (5"1 woman). Prior too this I had exercised regularly but weight wasn't moving, which lead me to the conclusion that my diet was the problem. I cut out wheat, sugar and beer and it fell off. Everything I ate, I cooked myself from fresh ingredients and I think that was the secret.

As to the breast comments, I know a woman who went from DD to A when she lost 5 stone, on the other hand I lost 2 stone, all from my hip region (14 down to a 10), but my D-sized girls didn't shift at all, so go figure

At that height you'll easily get away with 15 stone before you are technically overweight. With a large enough build, that could be pushed to 15.5 - 16 stone.

im a bit of a fat bastard really although im reasonably healthy & dont eat meat, years of beer drinking have had an effect .
As a new year resolotion ive decided to take a bit more excersise & restrict my junkfood intake but thats it.
i'd rather be the way i am than a self obsessed weight watchers cult member who contantly talks about how many "points" there are in food

My aim is to join a gym and put on 2 stone by February!I wont be overweight at 14 stone, just more built! :D

Well in fairness, I do have a large build. I don't mean that I'm fat as in out there in your face fat, but I mean that I do have excess fat on my body. I think that is what this thread is about. Alot of people in Ireland are content with being just about able to be the right weight without noticing that they do have excess fat that they should get rid of.

well that's not true.. there's not such thing as a normal weight.. if i was to loose weight, which i have(at most i have been 22st) i would only want to get to about 17st, i would be happy at 18st.. I could NEVER EVER imagine being 13-14st!! i'd just be skin and bones!

There is such a thing as being big boned, not literally though

why should they get rid of that... why is it normal to be thin? why is it wrong for people to be fat?

tbh that's a ****ty attitude to have

I was just saying that, that is what I think the thread is about. It's not my personal opinion. TBH, if you're happy with how you look then so be it, its your body you can treat it as you wish (in the same way that people get piercings and tattoos).

However I do not believe that people should let their health be effected by being overweight. If that is the case, then I think they should get up and do something about it. But then again that is their own choice.

I got warned by my doctor over 6 months ago that either I start doing something about my weight or get fitted for a wooden box. I'm 25. I was put on beta-blockers to reduce my blood pressure. I was 22st 9lbs. I wore 44" pants & XXL/XXXL t-shirts.

After years of putting it off & my weight going up & up I finally pulled my finger out of my ass & am now down to just under 16.5 stone, & am way smaller size wise & now wear 36" pants, & can wear L t-shirts.

My quality of life improved & to be honest, I'd rather slit my ****in wrists than go back to being that size or weight again. I was never happy & I'd eat to make myself feel better (irony - only made me bigger & heavier!!!!) I never used to judge "fat people" cos I was one, now I find myself doing that..... Don't know why it is 'accepted' - perhaps another facet of american life Irish people are willing to blindly embrace????

Fair play dude. That must have took some very hard work. May I ask how much of a change in lifestyle (food, exercise etc.) did you have to go through to get to where you are?

    Well said, venom.

At the start of 2004, I was a 16½ stone weakling (I don't mind admitting it!). I was unhealthy, unfit, and had a sweet tooth. After a year of hard work in the gym and watching what I ate, I'm down at 12½ stone. I'm toned, have just over 11% body fat, and feel fantastic. I have a much better quality of life, and I have more energy ... I just feel healthy.

I recommend it to anyone thinking of getting in shape for the new year. Its worth it in the long run.

The only downside to losing weight is the hit on your wallet. I went from 38 waist to 32 waist, and bought at least 4 pairs of jeans/trousers at 36, 34 and 32. At least I'm done now, and any clothes I buy in future should last alot longer...

i went from about 14-15 stone (think I'm 5 foot 10 or so) around the start of 04 (I've been overweight since I was a kid), to 10.5-11 stone around... june/july I think. All I know that I did differently is stop eating sugar, ate fruit instead of sweets/snacks and stopped drinking beer. Seemed to help a bit.. I've kept my wait around 11 since then even though I've been slipping and buying ungodly amounts of sugary sweets lately.

    exercise is for chumps :)

    COMPLETE lifestyle change.

    - NO coffee/tea/caffeine (as they are metabolism inhibitors & when you're trying to kick start yours, they don't help
    - NO sugar
    - NO chocolate
    - NO fried foods
    - NO snacking, 3 meals square
    - Slimline milk, no full fat dairy PERIOD!!!!!
    - Drinking plenty of water & fresh fruit juice
    - Training for 2 hours a day 3 to 4 days a week of NOTHING but a solid Cardio Vascular program I devised for myself, which at each training session (preferably morning since your metabolism is at's peak then) & eating after training with foods that further stimulated the metabolism to burn more (i.e. porridge).
    - Walking lots
    - Nights out limited to 3 Bulmers lite only & that was only one night a week, otherwise it was Cranberry & Soda for the nite.

I literally had to turn my lifestyle on it's head in every way to get to this & christ it was hard & I never thought i'd get to this size, it may as well have been trying to climb everest in my eyes.....

yeah fair play!! i do admit that i am overweight and i did try and loose it.. i went to the gym at least twice a week.. but since i started a new shift at work(work 10 hours, out of the house for 12) i just haven't had the will power or energy to go to the gym and my diet has hit rock bottom!! but it's my own fault, i don't have any excuses because there is a perfectly good gym in work:(

*edit* and i do admit, your particular story is quite inspiring:)

Bulmer's Light is a great drink if you're trying to watch your sugar intake. Some pubs have been slow to stock it though

Fair play, and I bet you have never felt any better in your life than you do right now too.

To be honest, I find the snacking (crisps/pot noodles) and the drinking (JD and Bulmers) to be the worst myself. Add that to the fact that I do not drink water (I hate it). But I do drink lots of fruit juice, I walk alot, train alot, don't eat chocolate or fries and don't drink coffee/tea/caffeine. I wouldn't normally have sugar either. I suppose that sums me up, I'm sort of in between being overweight and being the proper weight for my size.

What you've done is the perfect way of losing weight as far as I can see. Although it is very hard to get done, it is very effective. Once again fair play.

Blaming the government is all well and good, but people continue to eat junkfood that they KNOW is bad for them. It's laziness and the fact people just don't care. I don't think anyone is under the impression McDonald and chocolate/crisps are good for them.

Milk is not what's making them all fat. It doesn't help, but touting it as the cause for people being fat, I don't agree with.
