Probably used completely the wrong words, but such is life. I know its possible to set different programs as your background, but I'm unsure as to how. I've done some rooting around on Google and elsewhere, but as I don't really know what terminology would be used, I don't know what to look for, and I've drawn a blank.

Any Gentoo users here want to give me a pointer? :D

Do you mean you want a windows-like interface? Where everything has a nice window, and looks pretty? If so, you're looking for XFree86, Gnome and Nautilus (i think). When you install those, i think you have a windowed enviorment, as opposed to commandline.

But you might need something else, i'm not sure :p

lol no, you got it wrong-I want to put a console into the background on my desktop instead of an image.

It would be pretty sweet to be able to do that. Could one not poke around with ones window manager and make an item always be at the bottom and to turn off it's window decorations? That might work...

you can play movies in the root window (mplayer --rootwin) and screensavers,
and loads of stuff draws to the root window, should be easy to have a console in the root window, like torsmo, although i havnt tried myself.

Hmm. I can do it in Fluxbox-I just run it at desktop level. However, how can I tell Fluxbox not to add Eterm to the slit? :)

EDIT: I'll slap up some screenies when I find a config I'm happy with.
