My mates pc had XP and was giving lots of trouble. It would load up and you could use word etc but it kept prompting to log onto internet sites. I got some spyware remover which deteected lots and deleted it, then it would freeze after the login in stage when rebooted.
I plugged in the hd as a slave in my own pc and did a virus scan and got rid of lots of them, 100+ removals. Still wont boot. I think some system files were wiped by the spyware remover.
Can I just reinstall XP over the existing system without reformating the hd?
If I do should I install using the same 2 user logon names, would it cause trouble if I didnt?

Well, if you're going to go to the trouble of re-installing, my advice would be to backup whatever data he wants to keep and zap the disk. Considering the amount of malware that you've already discovered I wouldn't be satisfied with anything other than a from-scratch install.

    Regards,

    Liam
