In med-evil times they found that people were re-awakening from the dead after finding scratch marks on the inside of coffins. From then on string was then tied to the deceased's hand leading out of the ground to a bell hanging from a tree. If they awoke to find themselves buried they could pull on the string and help would be called; thus the expression 'Saved by the Bell' was formed.

As the theory goes, no matter how hard you kick the football it won't go forward, come to think of it you wouldn't even be able to move your foot forward to kick it in the first place. You'd be completly unable to move forward in any way, you probably wouldn't mind that too much though, you'd be more worried about the fact that your blood could only move towards the back of your body and not be able to come back to the front.

Someone asked what the difference was between a herb and a spice.
Herbs largely grow in temperate climates and spices largely grow in tropical climates.
So parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme (thanks Simon and Garfunkel) are herbs, while pepper, chilli, cumin and lemongrass are spices.

There's probably some sort of overlap, but that's a pretty good rule of thumb
