That's a hell of a lot of processor time Praetorian.
I can't help wondering how long it'll take the guys at Stanford to use F@H (or any other distributed computing program) for their own nefarious ends. Think of the world domination schemes you could come up with if you had ~160 million processors doing your thinking for you...
    Dr. Evil take note!

uhhh Evil FAH thing went for weeks without giving an error, though it seems it never submitted anything(i never looked at the stats)......seems to have thrown em mostly out.....have to start again :o

Are you sure you set your username and other stuff before you ran it and submitted units ? If you didn't, it will just submit the completed units under anonymous user.

Yea you didn't fine one single alien! ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

wasn't their some scientist that said seti wasn't very likely to find any aliens at all considering on earth within 50 years we will have moved from radio signals for transmission to laser based systems ? So leaves only 100 - 150 year span on a planet assuming the same technology evolution to find them.......hrmm...

Ahh I do now Ian. I thought your alias was Serial though :p

40 active cpus? Do you buy dell Limerick or something?

We have 30 other pc's in our other office, but they don't have net access, so there is no point setting up F@H :(

Went thru a phase of randomly changing it ;)

not quite, did get a few new toy's ~40 diskless 2.4/2.8ghz boxes so are on and idle 24hrs a day.........

there is no point setting up F@H :(
I don't suppose you could route the connection through a box that does have the net? or possibly get one box to dl all the work and share a drive n then upload completed stuff?(though thats assuming the other office is connected to ur's some how..)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,719 ✭✭✭Praetorian

I'm in charge in this office so I can do what I like with the pc's, the other office is accross the hall, but I don't really like the manager, and he doesn't want his staff to have net access, so they don't.

I'm happy enough that 11 cpus are contributing :)

fair enough, hrmm we should have that 1000 spot with in a day or 2, 1013 now..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,719 ✭✭✭Praetorian

954 of 35001 now. Of course, we won't make big leaps and bounds up the league table indefinitely. There are a lot of very strong teams we'll never catch. I reckon we can do a lot better than just 27 members (some inactive of course)! Boards.ie probably has over a thousand active members with b/b connections, all of which could join the team.

We could ask for a forum, which may generate some interest, but to be honest there isn't a whole lot to discuss. We could ask an admin to make an announcement, but the more I think about it, the more I realise they probably wouldn’t…

    Any ideas?

872 now, we broke the 900 barrier...can't imagine the 800th will be as easy..

I'll try and get another 2 machines up and running the client this weekend. Maybe that'll help boost us up the list. They are pretty crap machines though so probably wont do much for us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 812 ✭✭✭neGev

I'll not be able to fold over Christmas, I'm heading home today and I don't have a net connection to speak of at home.
    Merry Christmas you lot!

Now that I think about it again, we'll probably creep up the table for a while longer, because we are such a relatively new team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭Farls

Just after starting folding@home there, i often thought about doing the SETI one but never got round to it, i'm gonna be slow to start on this with an average pc and 56k dialup but january brings me bak to top spec pc's with bb!
