folding at home!

    Folding at home!
DO YER BIT FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH!!

...what, you ask? What is folding at home? Don't tell me you've not heard of folding at home!

To explain a littler further I shall just quote directly from the site, they can explain it for you far better than I can.
What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.
What are proteins and why do they "fold"? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, and Parkinson's disease.
How can you help? You can help our project by downloading and running our client software. Our algorithms are designed such that for every computer that joins the project, we get a commensurate increase in simulation speed.

I and many, MANY, other people forums and sites across the planet(including google, many people here may already be part of googles folding team) have found this to be a worthy cause, and downloaded the client and setup their own team. I believe IOL should be a part of this. Getting a folding at home team started would be a desireable outcome of this very thread, if anyone's intrested, that is.
It's simple, just download a client(GUI or Console version, doesn't matter, unless you're on a pentium 4 with hyper threading tech enabled, then just ask and I'll explain further) enter a screen name you desire and then sit back, and do nothing. It runs completely in the backround, you won't notice it. The only thing you'll notice is that your CPU usage has shot up, but, this is a VERY low rated process, so it will not take away from anything you're doing(using the net, playing games etc) because it just runs on the excess processer power which is not being used. I probably should have made a topic on this ages ago because I've been using the program for months now.

hope this has not already been mentioned/setup here because i'll look like a f00l. But I did a search and found nothing, so, stfu!
Im not sure if this is indeed the correct place to post this, but, I see it's about computing, and, most people that post in here seem to be using nice machines, so I need to reel you lot in first ;)

    So... anyone intrested?

I've been running the SETI command line client for a few years now. It's hard to justify it in the face of distributed medical research, but I like to think that if ETI was found, even a few hundred light years away, that it would help to unite humanity in some way.

Distributed computing efforts are worthwhile though, whether you choose seti@home, or folding@home :)

Yeah, it's called BOINC. It's still in beta though, so the old one is running in parallel with it. I'm running boinc, but it's not entirely stable yet (can be difficult to get work units).

Is anyone by any chance in any team that I might want to join for F@H?

Should some people get together and make a boards.ie folding team? Its something i've been thinking of getting into lately, but my main computer isn't connected to the net, is it possible to use folding without a direct connection, like Prime95?

I love that video. Particularly when she says "zukini". And that system works aswell.

Why not? Boards.ie had/has teams for both The United Cancer research project and SETI@Home, might as well set up one for F@H..

We should definity set up a boards.ie team. I just started this and it's been running happily in the background. The team setup form is here: http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/createteam.pl Perhaps one of the admins should do it?

In the absence of any other interest, I've gone ahead and created the Boards team. The Team Id is 39432.

My work here is done

Heh, but I've got 2 instances running, one for tournament.com, and one for IOL :)

    BUMP!

Also, I was just looking round the net and found this so you have your Folding@Home (or any other distributed computing) stats in your sig.
Also, whoever shurl is, he/she is horsing away! :D

Nice to see there is indeed some people folding. Im not on the team asof yet because I've been folding at another forum.

But as of today mang87(originaly Bri_Folds@homealot) is folding for IOL

What's your username, I just assumed you'd be using the same nick as on Boards

I've set it up on my server and put the team id as the Boards.ie team. Is there anything else I need to do?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 4,569 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ivan

I think you have to complete a full work unit. Then it reconnects and updates your stats. You wont be recognised until then. At least I think so...

I've signed up, 2 machines - Ivan in team 39432.
    Boardsies.

They all count, don't worry about how long it takes to do a WU.

    Bump! :D

    Join team boards.ie ! :P

    I concur :)
It'll give you a warm fuzzy feeling in your stomach!

Praetorian and JohnK: how many comps are you guys running it on? You're both racing away like mad things!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

Hrmm how long does the average chunk take to process? does it support resume'n?

Should say running 4 of em on a dual xeon 3ghz with HT'n enabled, and another one on a dual 2.4ghz xeon with HT'n enabled also(only 1 on the second server so shouldn't have any form of competition for cpu time..)

I've got 3 machines running night and day on it :)

Really depends on the work unit itself and your processor. Some can take only hours, some take days. And yes, it does support resuming.

I feel slightly better now about Praet and JohnK disappearing into the horizon given that I only have one machine folding :)
Also, we should try to keep this thread somewhat alive so as many users see it as possible. Even if someone clicks on it by accident and ends up joining it'll be worth it :p

I have Folding@Home installed on 11 pc's at work. Most pc's are on 9-5 Monday to Friday. The Folding@Home cpu usage is set to very low so there is no noticeable performance drop for the users. We have 4 older computers and I may install F@H onto those as well in the near future.
