I'm with you, Elmo - I like this kind of thing. Agree too that the old Network 2 logo (the original) was by far the best. The earth/fire/water/air one set wasn't so bad, but the current (and previous to this) crop were a disaster, with no definable identity of their own.

That said, the new batch of RTÉ TWO promos have already begun airing and I don't think there's very much of an identity or brand visible there. Just RTE ONE with a different set of letters.

They really should have tried harder to revamp the whole channel.

If I was in charge the gombeens who present ID would go, I'd give the Den back its time up from 6am-6pm (no DOG allowed on it, though), probably put a yoof show like Jo-Maxi on at 6pm, keep Home & Away, put Neighbours at 7pm. a sitcom/Simpsons at 7.30, imported US shows at 8pm, Irish material from 9-10 every night (bit of the aul investment required, of course!), decent imports at 10pm (Six Feet Under, Dead Like Me, CSI, 24 etc.), News on Two at 11pm, decent comedy at 11.30pm (maybe Irish standup on alternate nights, or a return for a late night show like Nighthawks), and from midnight a late movie for the insomniacs, followed by the imported stuff they like to throw in the wee hours at the moment. It needs to be more tied down, more Irish, more organised. You can't actually look at Network 2 on any given night at the moment and even vaguely know what to expect.

I'm ranting now. Don't get me started on TV3!

So from some one who works in RTÉ what do the staff think of the whole marketing ploy?

Is it uninspired? Especially from Cathal Goan who really created TG4/TnaG's Image and allowed so much Imagination occur.

Is it RTÉ or are you pronouancing the R T E as Gealige?
Incidentally Raidio na *Gealtachta* would meen "looney radio"

Merging this with the existing RTE TWO thread:

On the whole question of which image was best - well N2 1997 was IMO the best. Not only was it a superb graphical package, but the programming was well thought out too. There were definable theme nights, comedy night was Monday, there was a different news service to RTE ONE (News 2, abandoned a year ago in favour of regular RTE News) and that was followed by the Later strand.

The original Network Network (etc) - well a classic ident no doubt, but a bit boring by today's standards. Hopefully we will get an airing of it on Saturday night. That too was a good relaunch.

1995 was an attempt to bring it in to the RTE corporate image - much like we're getting this week...

I never liked the name Network 2 so it's nice to see the old name coming back.

And regarding RTE bashing, I really don't think they are too bad at all.

It's only because we can get BBC (probably the best chanels in the world) that make RTE seem so lame in comparison. But if you compare RTE with national channels in other European countries (especially considering its comparative budget) then I really don't think it's too bad at all.

Now if they could just come up with some way to have Marty Wheelan on the air 24 hours a day.....

I don't think we are RTE bashing.

At least I am just say that RTE need to make a few basic changes to the N2/RTE2 schedule.

500,000 euro is not worth the make over.

Network 2 (imo) should be Irelands answer to C4.

We could certainly bash RTE (and it is done quite often on boards) however this is about the biggest Marketing mistake in the history of RTE.

A good schedule with an hour (at least) of Irish programming. All of which should be willing to compeate with EastEnders, Fair City, Emmerdale and Coronation Street.

All I am asking for is a good choice.

Correct. As somebody said already, "Network" refers to a collection of broadcasting entities, For example RTE is a network, and BBC is a network.
Network 2 was not a network.
Referring to a single tv station as a network is just plain wrong syntactically.
I always thought Network 2, Only in Ireland.... :o

Honestly, do we care. Only in Ireland could someone actually care.

It was more about the image then what they actually called it.
Lets face it Station 2, Channel 2 or Network 2?
I thought it was a good choice.

You could take it that it is the Second channel in their Network. That is the RTE Network. Thus you get the name Network 2.

RTE2 just brings it so back into the 1980's, I can't help but thinking how old fashioned that name is, RTE2.

Personally I dont like the new Idents. Not the best they have ever had.
As for the Breaks. After 5 years of having Break parts that tell you whats on they have reverted to just the RTE TWO ident. Grrrr. Grrr. Old Fashioned. Lame.

if you look at the shedule except for an half hour here or there of irish programmes it is the same station ie CSI Miami.LAw and Order and Friends ohhhhhh and the highly brand new FR Ted.. what a difference it made.. honestly at least back then it had jo maxi and some irish programmes on. and dont get Me started on the widescreen issue. if the truly wanted to be a bit adventurous they could have started to use full widescreen i.e 16/9 at least for movies. but hey its rte it will take another 20 years for them to formulate a policy on that.

I don't like the RTE TWO breakers (I think that's what they're called, the things at beginning and end of advert breaks). The panning around a green room or something? WTF?

At work, RTE had sent a pile of leaflets telling of the move of RTE Radio 1 from Medium Wave to Long Wave 252. On the back of the leaflet, RTE listed it's "companies" and one of them was "RTÉ TG4"

    Possibly a printing error?

Possible marketing bull, the registered ‘Business Name’ is ‘TG4’.

Re-brands can be fine as long as something is changing, so-far I know nothing with RTE 2 that is changing.

honestly at least back then it had jo maxi and some irish programmes on.

Just look at the time they put Song's From Another Room on at. (Did you know a new series was coming up???)

They did the same with No Disco.

Indeed with the last to Re-branding there had several new Irish Programmes.

    Network 2
    Jo Maxi
Dempsey's Den (Moved over from RTE One)
Cursí (A half hour irsh language show)
    Night Hawks
    Sratch Saturday
    The Beat Box

    And with N2

    Later On 2.....
Den TV (from 6 to 6)
News 2 (Tabloid version of Network News)
    DFTG
    Rodge And Podge
    2TV

    With this reimaging we get?????

A couple of new shows that would have went out no matter what the station was called.

I wish they'd bring back 'The End'! That was a fantastic show, i'd forgotten all about it until I saw Podge and Rodge doing the 'highlights' of Network 2's run last night.

You will notice that I was only using your phrase ("Only in Ireland") to argue the fact that prehaps Network Two was possibly renamed network 2, as it was the 2nd channel in the RTE network.

Yes I have posted alot on this thread but this is only in relation to the rebranding of Network 2, NOT as to weather or not Network 2 is "syntactically" correct.

Let face it TV3's offical name is

    TV3 Television Network Ireland Ltd.

Straight of is TV3 a TV network?
and Does the offical name have to state that TV3 is a Television Network, as I am sure that most, if not all, people know that TV stands for Television.

Just to put you all right. The term “network” in broadcasting refers to any station or service which is broadcast using a “network” i.e. more than one transmitter. Since “Network 2” was broadcast using several transmitters then it was a “network”. You may be aware that your beloved (can do no wrong) BBC often refer to Radio 4 as a “network”. One again RTE is in the dock …falsely!

Thanks for putting us right.
I think its time to get technical.
In television broadcasting terminology, a network is a COLLECTION of stations in different TV markets which combine together to show common programming at commonly defined times on
different channels. Such stations may be owned directly by the NETWORK COMPANY, or they may be a independently owned stations which have entered into an agreement with the network to become a network affiliate.
One thing a network is NOT is a single TV station belonging to a national broadcasting network.
RTE should be in the dock for allowing some wise-arse executive idiot 15 years ago to coin the phrase Network 2.

In fairness to BBC Radio 4, when it was the Home Service, there were unique programmes in each of the regions of England (North, Midlands, South etc) and then Scotland, Wales and NI. A proper network. It was not until the mid 70's that we got standalone BBC Radio Ulster, BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Radio Wales.

This left BBC Radio 4 as a very English thing and no daytime R4 programmes were heard outside of England. With the growth of BBC Local Stations, BBC Radio 4 was reorganised, and with the help of the frequency changes of 1978, it became a UK-wide station when it went to 200 kHz LW (later 198 kHz) replacing BBC Radio 2 (a very unpopular decision here and in Europe back then.)

Plus, when you add in that Open University programmes and Cricket often appear on R4 LW, it does rejoin the rest of the network on FM.

    From TV3.ie
Offering viewers a quality alternative to the country's three state-owned networks, including the part-time Irish language broadcaster TG4, TV3 went to air with a mixture of news, current affairs, mini-series and Irish-produced programming.
    TV3 Television Network Ltd,

    Westgate Business Park,

    Ballymount, Dublin 24. Ireland
    ,
RTE should be in the dock for allowing some wise-arse executive idiot 15 years ago to coin the phrase Network 2.

If the had also renamed RTE One Network 1 at the time would you have been ok with that?
