Does SSL incur a performance hit?

    Should only usrname/password type data be encrypted or is it ok to encrypt an entire site using SSL?

    SSL does have a performance hit (depending on encryption level) on the server side, as the server has to encrypt/decrypt all traffic to the secure site. a very rough rule of thumb is to double your processing power smile.gif

    compaq have someform of ssl accelerator cards which do the crypto in hardware..

    dunno much about them, I just browsed across the url last night after reading a query about the units on a mailing list.
