Killing tree roots/stumps

I have cut down some (coniferous) trees which were growing wildly out of control. However, someone mentioned to me that it is necessary to kill the stumps/roots. Any suggestions on the best way to do this?

There are companies who specialise in destroying the stumps. They have a machine that pretty much mulches them in the ground.

However, if you want a more DIY approach - I've heard that drilling holes in the stumps and filling them with diesel does the trick.
