Farewell Network 2, Hello RTÉ TWO ?!?

According to a report in today's Irish Independent, RTE Network 2 will be re-branded in September as - wait for it - RTE2.

They felt that the title RTE Network 2 was too long-winded, and want to show more sports and other programmes to attract the 30+ age group viewers, blah blah.

Could see that coming as soon as they re-introduced the RTÉ part back into the name. I think I predicted it on the Television forum a while ago, but I can't be arsed searching for the thread.

ok, hands up who never saw this coming

it only became long winded when they added RTÉ to the name
is 2FM going to become RTÉ Radio 2

I think 2fm is far too strong a brand to be changed to RTE Radio 2.

    2fm sounds 'cooler'.. doesn't it? ;)

    Well this is just stupid

Lets all face it when RTE 2 changed its name the first time and when 2fm became 2fm it was because the RTE Brand stunk.

Excuse me marketing people in RTE but since when did the RTE brand become so good?

All N2 needs is a proper schedule. YOU FOOLS.

    Edit

Does this mean the Irish Examiner will become Cork Irish Examiner and back to the Cork Examiner.

And let me guess Today FM becomes RAIDO IRELAND TODAY FM and back again to Raido Ireland.

What 02 and Vodaphone will be after that.

Right back to where we started.....

There has been a whiff of this in the air... with the new 2fm big prize blitz promoting "RTÉ 2fm" and thetvroom.com getting wind if it some months back too...

I wonder what the logos will be like.... ?

While we're on the topic of RTE rebrands - any chance they'll become truthful with the 'You're A Star' franchise and just rename it 'Money-spinner 2004', or perhaps more bluntly, 'We can't afford Pop Idol'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,607 ✭✭✭✭sceptre

Everything I wanted to say I said here. Apart from thoroughly demonstrating that the markedroids have taken over at Montrose I don't see the point. Still I suppose they have to try and bury that surplus somewhere lest they run the tiny chance of a licence fee reduction.

    'We can't afford Pop Idol'.

    Thank God!

Yet another waste of money from the masters of that art. Why can't they just attract an audience by showing programming that they will be interested in?

Could we merge these two threads?

Don't know about the Television forum, but we discussed it right here on the Broadcasting forum a whole eight months ago...

Will all this RTE branding affect TG4

There was a big write up in the independent today about it and the feeling i got from the article is that it is a good idea.

Another question I have will they give both RTE 1 and 2 the same brand identity like they had around the time of RTEs 25th anniversary, where both stations had the same logo and things like that.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,312 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

TG4 has so far been exempt from all the RTE branding which has been going on since last September. Even RnaG did not escape this time...

The plan is for TG4 to demerge from RTE (its one of the many yet-to-be-implemented-and-probably-never-will-be clauses of the Broadcasting Act 2001), and also RTE TG4 would be even more of a mouthful than RTE Network 2. I think RTE will wait to see what the Government will do regarding TG4 before trying to brand it as RTE. If TG4 is to de-merge from RTE, there would be no point in any rebranding.

I think TG4 want to be Seprate from RTÉ but RTÉ have halted their plans to demerge.

I beleive that RTÉ also halted their plans to have a morning show a few years back.

I think it would be devastating for TG4 to merge with RTÉ, the little freedom they have from RTÉ has been good for TG4.

But RTÉ are saying that currently it wouldn't be good for TG4 to be completely independent.

At work, RTE had sent a pile of leaflets telling of the move of RTE Radio 1 from Medium Wave to Long Wave 252. On the back of the leaflet, RTE listed it's "companies" and one of them was "RTÉ TG4"

    Possibly a printing error?

Oddly I am looking forward to the renaming/reidentity????

OK going back to where they came from in the first place, a reimaging????

Only because I think the current Idents for N2 have been the worst they have ever had, there so boring.

Bring back the good old days when the relaunched????? as N2. Brillant Idents.

Well thats all i have to say. yes very sad.

    From: Digiguide

    ENTERTAINMENT: Farewell Network 2
    Channel: RTE Network 2
    Date: Saturday 2nd October 2004
Time: 9:10 pm to 9:45 pm (starting in 8 days)
    Duration: 35 minutes.
Dara O' Briain narrates this lighthearted celebration of 18 years of RTE Network 2 as its name changes to RTE Two, recalling shows including Nighthawks and Bachelor's Walk and performers who found an outlet for their talents on the channel, like Barry Murphy and Ardal O'Hanlon.

EIGHTEEN YEARS??? No way.... October 1988, and thats just 16...

I noticed an advert with Podge and Rodge regarding the name change. Don't think it'll make much difference though!

    No of course it won't.

RTE need to start making TV for N2/RTE2.

I have only heard of one show and that's The Dinner Party (Reality TV  )

Oh I suppose there's The Panel.

But come on is that all they have to offer us?

Oh and more american imports on at 1am???????

Schedule people the schedule is crap.

    More like

RTE TWO out with the old in with the even older.

    What a waste of time.

Seems that Podge and Rodge are doing all the continuity on Saturday night on RTE Two (reminds me of the old Halloween/Christmas theme nights that N2 used to do), and that the relaunch will take place at 8pm.

At least they're not doing what they did in 1997 and running non-stop music videos for the relaunch. (And it will have to be some package if its going to match that overall, the 1997 N2 relaunch is one of this best on-air identities any station I have ever seen as had, even if it did get lazy and diluted in later years).

Yeah I noticed tonight many new promos for new and up-coming shows on the new RTÉ TWO. Graphic style for promos is in keeping with ONE, i.e. simple use of colours, which is mainly green. I look forward to seeing what the final graphics package will be like....will we see this Saturday?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,312 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

From the trailer it seems it will be a lot like RTE ONE - different obviously, green is the dominent colour instead of blue, and no doubt with different idents with a different theme. But it seems the RTE TWO will be in the same position on screen as on RTE ONE's idents and menus, and promos seem to follow the same style as the parent channel.

Obviously the brief has been to make it part of the RTE family, which really keeps with RTE policy since September 2003 (ie, mention RTE as many times as possible and put the logo on everything.) Wheras in 1997, the brief seems to have been do the opposite (remember the "N2 Production" endcaps on programmes quite clearly made by RTE...).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

One of the reason that RTE is changing the name back was because RTÉ Network 2 was to long winded.

    Emmmm

    RTÉ Radio Na Gealtachta
    RTÉ 2fm
    RTÉ Lyric fm

    mmmmmm

    pity there so long winded.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,312 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Although the 2FM DJs seem to be resisting the RTE Branding Machine, they usually still refer to the station as simply 2FM. However the news bulittens seem to have become fully RTE-ised with "RTE News on 2FM" followed swifly by "RTE Sport on 2FM" and "RTE Weather on 2FM". With RTE TWO taken care of who bets 2FM will be the next station to have its branding examined by RTE???

No idea what RnaG is doing, nil a lan Gaelige agam.

It has to be said, none of RTE's long-winded names match that of UKTVG2, a channel whose name even its own announcers slag off.

For RTE2 to improve as a station they need to minimise the output of Childrens TV. It is just wall to wall kiddies stuff at the moment.

    Cheapim:-

Beidh tú ag eistacht le RTÉ Radio Na Gealtachta.

    Ní Cheapim:-

Beidh tú ag eistacht le Radio Telefis Éireanne Radio Na Gealtachta.

    Tá suil agam. (I hope)

And the question remains how do they introduce the nuacht, that would just be a nightmare.

Anois Nuacht Radio Telifis Eireanne ar Radio Telifis Eireanne Radio Na Gealtachta le ......

Sorry about the bad spelling and Grammar, I too do not have great Irish.
For RTE2 to improve as a station they need to minimise the output of Childrens TV. It is just wall to wall kiddies stuff at the moment.

I don't think that is true. They output The Den from 6am to 5.30pm, and then ID from 5.30pm to 7pm and then RTE2 from 7 to 2.

They just need to make more Irish TV (or prehaps a good choice while Emmerdale, Coronation St., Fair City and EastEnders are on) for viewers of the channel from 7pm to 2am (the should extend that to 6am) and also need to sort out their SCHEDULE. (Have I mention that they have a terrible schedule on RTE2)

Of course I think they should use their UHF transmission of RTE2 to provide some other daytime TV. (Perhaps RTE2 Local from 12pm to 3pm)

But I dont think they transmit two RTE2s around the country??????
