Yeah it's a pain in the proverbials, Palm PDA's dont work, Pocket PC's dont work, Macs work but the login proxy screen is all screwed up so you have to click willynilly around the screen to connect !!! Once connected it works great, I do my study on the mezz floor so I can have BB access to do research !

At the info desk on arrivals they hand out an Eircom leaflet advertising the service, it says you simply enter "eircom" in the ssid field of your wireless control panel ! yeah right !

The services are provided FOC by Eircom Internet and ESAT BT for the duration of EU presidency. After June you will be aable to purchase tokens that will enable you to have access.

The 4 Bars in the Terminal that are are franchised by Reeds are in the process of installing a hotspot which should be up and running very shortly, this service is supplied by a company who specialise in wi-fi hotspots in cafes and bars.

None of the above are ownwd or controlled by Aer Rianta so no point complaining to them. As I said above the info desk provide info on how to connect to the service, on the leaflet there is an Eircom lo-call number to call for support.

Do you mean the VIP lounges ?

Aer Lingus Gold Circle offer the service to it's members at the moment not sure about pricing but no doubt it's a rip off like most of these services.

What do people think of these wifi hotspots ?

I know eircom have a few, some free (airport) and some you pay for.

Solas Bar on Camden Street has started offering free wi fi

Cafe Ciao on Baggot St Bridge has free access - not sure if it is deliberate though - signal not too strong - but good enuf.

Anywhere in Dublin Castle area is super fast - to impress the foreign journos I guess. Is the Chester Beatty piggy backing on this and if so will it collapse at end of June?

Is there no site where free access points can be listed? the bit buzz site does not clarify which are free and which are not.

Suggestion tot the mods - maybe a list of free nodes could be a sticky on this Board?

  • Registered Users Posts: 179 ✭✭topgold

Can the sticky on the free Wi-Fi nodes be called from a database? That would code a system for a (free) text response in a project we're working.

Care to help her update her listing?

Or can anyone point her to a better one?

Point was BitBuzz's hourly rate is a little less than some providers monthly rates - the link pointed to a certain external site.. http://weblog.techno-culture.com/stories/2003/09/01/irishWifiHotspotDirectory.html :D

    Just to clarify...

Bitbuzz supports free service in several locations where our location partners choose to give it away. This includes the Market Bar on Fade St, Ron Black's on Dawson St, the new Kylemore Cafe in Stephens Green and several more. You can ask staff for a voucher but you're generally expected to purchase something.

Bitbuzz does offer credit card services, but there is no hourly rate. (there is 15 mins, 30 mins, 2 hours, 24 hours etc). Our rates are the most competetive of any of the Irish wifi networks. Of course, you can't get cheaper than free :-)

Any question, drop me a mail (alex at bitbuzz dot com).

    Thanks,

    Alex

    Handy information Al. Thanks.
    Where are the others?

Me adds Ron Black's and the Market Bar to the top of my list of places to meet people who have a habit of being late.

Still not sure about the Kylemore though. ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 71 ✭✭Evil Al

AFAIK, The Golbe, The Front Lounge, Renards and Brown's Barn are free-with-purchase. I'm not certain since they may have changed policies (we give locations freedom to set their own pricing for vouchers).

The new Kylemore is actually fantastic... great coffee and tasty sambos. Not at all like the old one. I like the upstairs bit especially, you can hang out there for ages and chill out.

Can I turn up at any of these places with a Linux laptop, or are they all geared for M$ & IE?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,163 ✭✭✭ZENER

It would certainly be a bit annoying if that were to happen, in the airport I managed to get my Mac (OSX) to work. I'd say it would work OK just don't waste your time asking the staff for any assistance.

They have closed that one off now by the way, it's no longer free :(

In general, most hotspots I've played with in Ireland will work if you switch on DHCP and switch off proxies, WEP and WPA. Authentication via a web captive portal is pretty much universal now.

    boards in a nutshell!

Still Free wireless access at the Dublin Airport. Back from Paris 2 days ago and it's still free at Gate departure A. Once connected with my PocketPC, I sync'ed the avantgo pages and was able to listen to internet radio. You get the Eircom webpage with "login" button and "continue to surf" and there you go. Even used MSN messenger

Yes I must withdraw/defer my muppet comment - I was in Pier B the other day (is their wireless by o2?) I connected seamlessly and managed a couple of posts to boards before my flight was due....sad aint it!

In DIT Aungier St. you can get free wireless access. They use a blue socket authentication system but all you have to do is enter a guest email address and away you go.

Not 100% sure of the coverage but I've gotten good reception in the java city cafe on the ground floor.

I've never seen any log in page at Dublin airport.

I just turn on my Powerbook and the wireless connection is there, I don't have to do anything.. just browse and check email...

Last time I was there was 3 weeks ago...

I've never been impressed by the speed though.
