How anti-american are you?

An ex of mine is American, and a few of my friends are American. They are cool girls (if a bit dumb!) :D

But I very strongly dislike America, everything it represents, their bullying, lies etc.

My American friends are always shocked by this, but I reckon it's pretty common in Ireland, and pretty much everywhere else in the world.

I do think American people as individuals are fine, but as a group, a country etc., they are the most dangerous people/country in the world.

    What ya reckon?

"A person is smart, people are stupid..."

All right, so its Tommy Lee Jones in MiB, but the point of the fact is that the same critisism can be aimed at pretty much any country in the world...

Point and case, we elected the same loser government who screwed us stupid for five years to a second term... And the Americans are dumb???

I like America. Sure there's dumb Irish people aswell, maybe less so than America in terms of ratio, but not all Americans are dumb. It's the government I don't like.

Another aspect of America I that I don't feel particularily safe when I am over there. I agree with you that they are a pretty dangerous country to mess with...

The US Congress are made up of complete bully boy scumbags, who spend their days making sure that what they regularly get away with will land the rest of the American public in jail and then procede to apply this law to the rest of the world.

Nothing against the people themselves really, although it would be nice if they didn't accept every bit of mediocrity thrown at them by the likes of Fox etc.

Pretty much the same, but also, there are a few weirdo groups over there that take patriotism to far, and i'm against them as well. That's it really, the rest of the country is grand in my book.

I love the States, I love there other the top reaction to everything, "oh my god, are you really related to a leper-shawn". People here were so Pro American when Clinton was in and turning on xmas lights here and what not, Along comes George and all of a sudden we hate the yanks??

Please, our TV stations are full of US programming, do you not watch any of that?
Do you never visit the cinema or a McDonalds or drink Coke or Bud?

If George gets 4 more in 04 then you have to put up with more of his right wing beliefs but most of the yanks are sound, not dumb maybe naive?

Yes, but naive can translate into dumb. Big time!! :)

Don't you think they are destroying the world though? For example, their reaction post-9/11? I think that's when people's opinion changed towards America...

And the Indians and Pakistanis are ready to wage nuclear war on each other every time one of them look sideways over the border at the other, but do we call them dumb?

    No.

Why? Simply because the Americans publicise everything more, which in turn gets into our papers and on our TVs... They're the victims of their own media...

I dislike some aspects, George W. Bush being a principal factor. I dislike their attitude to violence (it being far more socially acceptable than sex, for example) and their views on censorship (won't someone please think of the children!). Their zealot like patriotism at times, and willingness to idiotically believe what is Foxfed to them also grates...

However, they've also done a lot of good. Their economy has spurred our own. Without their inventiveness and drive, we'd probably not all be typing here. They are - if misguided - well intentioned, it would seem. And it's hardly like Ireland is faultless - we may not have a violence social problem, but we have got an alcohol one...

So thumbs well down for the administration, but a general acceptance of the rest. Oh and they produce some fantastic television!

Hang on... come on... do India and Pakistan go around invading other countries, dropping bombs etc.?

Americans have a serious lack of knowledge about the rest of the world, you cannot deny that...

People and country are very different things. I don't believe the actions of the American governmnent accurately represent the ideology of the American people, but instead that of a minority of rich white men.

I dislike the way they can't seem to distinguish Nationalism (bad) from Patriotism (good). All this swear allegiance to the flag crap every day can't be healthy. This blind obedience that's seemingly drummed into them from birth is exceptionally dangerous. Ask questions. Think for yourself.

They're getting closer and closer to being Nazi Germany by the day. All the book burning, cd burning, etc. That's just mental. Combine that with the propaganda they call "news" and you've a recipie for disaster.

True, but I think the American people are apathetic about their own government, the running of their country by these rich white men and with regards to their country's foreign policy.

I think many have been 'brainwashed' by the Fox news network and their ilk.
They don't seem to question their leaders and they don't appear to care about the "was the war justified" question or anything else their leaders do.

Everyone else in the world knows that the war was about oil/money primarily but the fact that Bush has a lot of both means that he will probably win the next election.

I would say they are ignorent more so than apathetic. Many of them really do believe that America is a champion of democracy around the world, that they would never support brutal dictators, and that people only hate them because they are communists/facists/religious fundamentalists who hate freedom. I would like to think that they are a decent enough people not be apathetic if they really did know what was going on.

No. So they invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. TBH I'm surprised that GWB didnt NUKE afghanistan after 9/11.

The US government believe that they are acting in the US's national interest by attacking these two countries, I am not going to argue the rights and wrongs of it, thats for the politics forum.

Basically 3000 people were killed on 9/11, the US acted to remove the supporters (Perceived or otherwise) of the "folks" (to use GWB's term :) ) who attacked them, now the US is the bad guy?

I have a few cousins in the NYFD who lost many friends in 9/11, for those people the wounds are still very raw

There are a lot worse places and governments than the US at the moment

My Girlfriend is a US citizen, im not anti american

I am highly anti bush, but then again, so is every american i know with at least 2 brain cells (which might rule out a large chunk of the mid-west)

IMHO, america has great power, but, to continue the movie quotes, "with great power comes great responsibility", and i dont think that responsibility should lie with a man who doesnt know earth is in the solar system

    Raph

I don't think they could have reacted any worse. Since 9/11 you'd think America would think, "Why does the world hate us?", instead they've made even more people hate America. You cannot honestly say they've made the world a safer place.

The US government may be good to the American people, but they treat the rest of the world like dirt. No other government does that.

I have no fear of North Korea, Iran etc. They've done nothing bad outside their borders (for quite a while at least.) America is the only country screwing with everyone else.

They are a democratic country who vote in their government. Their government represents the people.

(I know technically Bush didn't win the election...)

America at the moment is like a three-year-old with a handgun.
Most intelligent, informed Americans I've heard the opinions of appear to agree.

Then you should be worried that the US government funded these people for years and then allowed them free access to the country so they could carry out the attack, an attack which couldn't have worked out better for the US government. Look how much power they have now.

Basically they're using the same tactics that have been used successfully for centuries to create a dictatorship, and all anyone can think is "But that could never happen to us, that only happens to those other countries in far far away places."
