Ladies-in-free nights not fair on men, watchdog rules

THE COUNTRY'S night club owners have conceded that ladies' nights in discos, where women get in for free, are a thing of the past following a decision by the Equality Tribunal.

In a landmark ruling, an equality officer found that a night club discriminated against a Clareman on grounds of gender.

He had been asked to pay Eur6.35 entry fee to a Limerick night club on the same night that women were being allowed in for nothing.

Thomas O'Connor was asked to pay into the Icon Nightclub in Limerick on May 3, 2001. He said he complained to the doorman of the club that it was unfair and discriminatory that he had to pay while females were not charged.

At the time, the nightclub had a policy of free entry for women on Thursday nights up to 1am.

The equality officer ruled in his favour and ordered that he be offered free entry to the night club for seven nights of his choice.

From now on, where the practice (a throwback to the disco days of the 1980s) is still in evidence, nightclub owners will be sure to set about re-examining their admissions policies.

Robbie Fox, owner of Reynard's nightclub in Dublin and spokesman for the Irish Nightclubs Owners' Association, said he believed the days of the "ladies go free" were over as times, and the legislative framework, have changed considerably in recent years.

Since the introduction of the Equal Status Act, an argument such as that made by Mr O'Connor could always have been made, he said.

"It's sad and true that we will have that argument every time," said Mr Fox, adding that the Equal Status Act had made huge differences to night club owners.

"I don't think there's a way around it. As far as that issue is concerned, ladies' night is a thing of the past," he said.

While he could understand the logic of having a nightclub full of girls - as this would be sure to attract males - times had changed, and this could work the other way around, too, he said.

While the Equality Officer in the Limerick case found that a compensation award would be appropriate, Mr O'Connor said money was not the issue at stake and that he had agreed with the nightclub that he would settle for just Eur10 in compensation.

Mr O'Connor said he had taken the case to raise awareness of the issue of discrimination and highlight the fact that men could suffer from it.

About bloody time an' all! Hopefully this'll halve the cost of entry, though I have my doubts.

(Wrong forum btw ;) - maybe After Hours would be better?)

    It is what it's.

Hurrah! Always irritated the hell out of me - it was like "We want equal rights. Except when it suits us." Fcuk off with that - it's the 21st century. Had no time for it.

    I applaud the ruling! :)

Fair dues. There's a lot of scumbags out there who would have pushed for a lot more than the cost of two pints.

Tbh, I haven't seen a ladies in free night in Dublin in a couple of years.

Hardly anywhere ever did that anyway. I only ever got into a place twice in my life for free, for being female. It's just one of these overhyped things cos it pisses guys off so much!

Does this mean guys now have to pay for gf? before they could get in free?!:D
this is a victory? looks like the night club owners are winning again. any chance they may reduce entry fees now that everyone is paying in? not likely!

Thought they'd raised the womens quotes to balance off with the mens somewhat?

To be honest I don't understand what people are complaining about on this thread. How did ladies free night affect them anyway?
It sounds like a case of sour grapes to me; "if we don't have it why should they?"
    :dunno:

It's about the principles of equality, not anything as base as "sour grapes"..

There is a lot of anti-male sexism these days, and would not be tolerated were it directly at women - I'm always glad to see stuff like this get called.

There is so much complaining on this thread but *nobody* that was pi$$ed off did anything, what on earth do ye expect.

    Be proactive...

I agree that the "ladies free" nights are a complete anachronism - but tbh u never see them anymore, except perhaps in some country towns. As for the quip about girls "scabbing free drinks"- that IS sour grapes! Nobody forces a guy to buy a girl a drink, and even if they do what do they expect in return? Do they seriously think a bacardi breezer will buy them a night of shagtastic passion?

    Hurrah! about time.
Does this now mean that men can go to "women only" strip shows and vice versa? And what about ladies only toilets? maybe finally we can find out what they talk about when they go in groups!

Pointing out an obvious fact is not the same as making a complaint.

I'm not concerned enough about the issue to take action, and won't be inspired to do so as a result of your command. The fact that I don't take action does not deny me the right to comment on the issue.

It's ironic that your rant is giving out about people not taking action, when the thread is about someone who did just that.
