    Boo rahhh.

Ladies-in-free nights not fair on men, watchdog rules

THE COUNTRY'S night club owners have conceded that ladies' nights in discos, where women get in for free, are a thing of the past following a decision by the Equality Tribunal.

In a landmark ruling, an equality officer found that a night club discriminated against a Clareman on grounds of gender.

He had been asked to pay Eur6.35 entry fee to a Limerick night club on the same night that women were being allowed in for nothing.

Thomas O'Connor was asked to pay into the Icon Nightclub in Limerick on May 3, 2001. He said he complained to the doorman of the club that it was unfair and discriminatory that he had to pay while females were not charged.

At the time, the nightclub had a policy of free entry for women on Thursday nights up to 1am.

The equality officer ruled in his favour and ordered that he be offered free entry to the night club for seven nights of his choice.

From now on, where the practice (a throwback to the disco days of the 1980s) is still in evidence, nightclub owners will be sure to set about re-examining their admissions policies.

Robbie Fox, owner of Reynard's nightclub in Dublin and spokesman for the Irish Nightclubs Owners' Association, said he believed the days of the "ladies go free" were over as times, and the legislative framework, have changed considerably in recent years.

Since the introduction of the Equal Status Act, an argument such as that made by Mr O'Connor could always have been made, he said.

"It's sad and true that we will have that argument every time," said Mr Fox, adding that the Equal Status Act had made huge differences to night club owners.

"I don't think there's a way around it. As far as that issue is concerned, ladies' night is a thing of the past," he said.

While he could understand the logic of having a nightclub full of girls - as this would be sure to attract males - times had changed, and this could work the other way around, too, he said.

While the Equality Officer in the Limerick case found that a compensation award would be appropriate, Mr O'Connor said money was not the issue at stake and that he had agreed with the nightclub that he would settle for just Eur10 in compensation.

Mr O'Connor said he had taken the case to raise awareness of the issue of discrimination and highlight the fact that men could suffer from it.

About bloody time an' all! Hopefully this'll halve the cost of entry, though I have my doubts.

(Wrong forum btw ;) - maybe After Hours would be better?)

    It is what it's.

Hurrah! Always irritated the hell out of me - it was like "We want equal rights. Except when it suits us." Fcuk off with that - it's the 21st century. Had no time for it.

    I applaud the ruling! :)

Fair dues. There's a lot of scumbags out there who would have pushed for a lot more than the cost of two pints.

Tbh, I haven't seen a ladies in free night in Dublin in a couple of years.

Hardly anywhere ever did that anyway. I only ever got into a place twice in my life for free, for being female. It's just one of these overhyped things cos it pisses guys off so much!

Does this mean guys now have to pay for gf? before they could get in free?!:D
this is a victory? looks like the night club owners are winning again. any chance they may reduce entry fees now that everyone is paying in? not likely!

To be honest I don't understand what people are complaining about on this thread. How did ladies free night affect them anyway?
It sounds like a case of sour grapes to me; "if we don't have it why should they?"
    :dunno:

It's about the principles of equality, not anything as base as "sour grapes"..

There is a lot of anti-male sexism these days, and would not be tolerated were it directly at women - I'm always glad to see stuff like this get called.

I agree that the "ladies free" nights are a complete anachronism - but tbh u never see them anymore, except perhaps in some country towns. As for the quip about girls "scabbing free drinks"- that IS sour grapes! Nobody forces a guy to buy a girl a drink, and even if they do what do they expect in return? Do they seriously think a bacardi breezer will buy them a night of shagtastic passion?

    Hurrah! about time.
Does this now mean that men can go to "women only" strip shows and vice versa? And what about ladies only toilets? maybe finally we can find out what they talk about when they go in groups!

Pointing out an obvious fact is not the same as making a complaint.

I'm not concerned enough about the issue to take action, and won't be inspired to do so as a result of your command. The fact that I don't take action does not deny me the right to comment on the issue.

It's ironic that your rant is giving out about people not taking action, when the thread is about someone who did just that.

Fair play to the guy alright, but this had nothing to do with women going on about lack of equality - just some guy pointing out a case of discrimination against men.

Two women barred from pub because they were 'too old'
    From:ireland.com
    Thursday, 15th January, 2004

Two women were refused admission to a Limerick bar because of their age, the equality tribunal has found. Julie-Anne Barnes reports.

Ms Suzanne Crawford (29) and Ms Margaret Crawford (36) were refused entry to The Bootlegger Bar when door staff told them they were "too old" and management wanted "younger women and older men" as customers.

The two women were awarded €300 each in compensation.

The tribunal issued 15 decisions yesterday which were made under the Employment Equality Act 1998 and the Equal Status Act 2000.

The director of the equality tribunal, Ms Melanie Pine, published the 15 decisions, nine (involving 16 people) under the Equal Status Act 2000 and six under the Employment Equality Act.

Mr Derek Kelly, who has Down's syndrome, was also found to have been discriminated against by Kelly's Lounge in Bray, Co Wicklow.

Mr Kelly's drink was taken from him and he was told to sit with his mother. The decision was made on grounds of disability.

It was accepted that the treatment of Mr Kelly was wrong and the respondent apologised for the incident.

Kelly's Lounge was ordered to invite Mr Kelly, his mother and four others to visit the pub and provide two free drinks each. Mr Kelly was also awarded €250 in compensation.

A restaurant was ordered to provide complimentary Sunday lunch to Ms Melanie Curtis and three people of her choice when it was found she had been discriminated against on family status grounds.

Ms Curtis was asked to leave the Barn Restaurant (Lotamore Ltd), Cork because she had an eight-month-old baby with her.

Of the six employment case decisions, two were upheld and four were not.

Both cases were upheld on grounds of gender.

Tesco Ireland was ordered to pay a female member of staff the same rate of pay as that of her male colleagues from February 13th, 2001, plus arrears in payment for three years prior to her claim.

Ms Mary Ginley was found to have been discriminated against when she was paid less than two male colleagues doing the same work.

Another case involved a woman who had been sexually harassed by a colleague. She was awarded €15,000 in compensation. The respondent was also ordered to review its policy in dealing with complaints of sexual harassment.

The equality tribunal was established in 1999 to hear complaints of unlawful discrimination under the Employment Equality Act 1998 and the Equal Status Act 2000.

There are nine grounds of discrimination: gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race and membership of the Traveller community.

Anyone who feels they have been discriminated against unlawfully can refer a claim to the tribunal free of charge.

If the girl has absolutely no interest then she shouldn't accept the drink. Tbh, don't be such a fcuking stuck up pikey. A guy buys a girl a drink because he is interested, the acceptance of this drink suggests that she is also interested. Fair enough if the guy turns out to b a complete tosswit but if she has no interest JUST SAY "NO". If so, buy your own goddamned drink.

hehehe! I'll not get into the kitchen!

I actually am suprised a lawsuit hasn't gone on about this in the US. We still have plenty of bars that do this at least once a week. But in return they also have a guys night too!

    2 points...

    1. The only nightclubs I have seen in Ireland offering a "Ladies Night" have been scumholes...

    2. I have often met guys in pubs, and you buy him a pint, he buys you a pint, you talk about the weather and thats it. You enjoy each others company. I would not let a bloke I met in a pub buy me drinks all night. It is rude and ignorant.

By the same token, if I buy a girl a drink in a bar, that does by no means entitle me to ANYTHING. A girl though, who flirts to get drink bought for her is also acting wrongly, plain and simple. But then those sorts of girls I would'nt go near anyway...

This reminds me of the time when I was out with group of mates and this slut came over to our table and managed to coax my overtly gullible friends into buying her ten or so drinks. Our table was becoming clustered with empty glasses as the night wore on. To be horror - well more to be amusement, I noticed a pint glass full of sick seated at the edge of the table. I was getting sick of her antics, the way she was so obviously playing my mates for fools. So when she went off to the toilet I poured about half the pint glass of sick into her pint of bulmers. She was so drunk that when she came back she drank the whole glass of bulmers lumpy sick mix straight. True story.
