Can you get a subsciption on a secondhand box ?
Or are you better off just getting a new one.

no previous subscription at this address or on the box in this country

You may as well get a new one via a first timer connection as you are entitled to it, if the phone line isn't an issue.
Get a ftv card or a mirror sub for the old box.

Or if you've relatives in UK, get a UK secondhand subscription sorted out for your box, and get C4, five, ITV, ITV2, etc.

You will need a credit card and of course close-ish relatives in UK! ;)

What I want to do is subscribe for about one month in three - there are so many repeats on most of the SKY / Discovery channels that it's just not worth it for a full year.

FTV from eBay would be kinda stupid 'cos the card has to be activated in the box - settings,4,5 IIRC to see the serial nos.

    Secondhand subscription hmmm... -
