One for the Ladies

(Is there any lady out there surprised about this one?)

Taken from Anaova; Women ‘should stay single to stay sane’

The key to happiness - and sanity - for women could be to spend the whole of their lives single, research has suggested.

A survey of almost 4,500 men and women found that women who stayed single enjoyed much better mental health than those who had married or suffered a relationship split.

But the same was not true for men, who fared better mentally if they were in a relationship.

The research, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, is at odds with the Bridget Jones generation of women who believe they can only be truly happy once they have nabbed a man.

Researchers at the University of London based their findings on the response to a mental health questionnaire of adults under 65 taking part in the British Household Panel Survey.

The team, led by Dr Michaela Benzeval, also found that serial relationships were good for men's mental health, but had an adverse effect on women.

While men did better mentally if they simply lived with a partner, marriage was more beneficial to a woman's mental health.

Break-ups were also painful for both sexes, but women generally took longer to recover.

Women's mental health also got progressively worse the more break-ups they had and the more new relationships they had to start.

And women who remained alone after a marriage split had the worst mental health of all those surveyed, apart from those who were alone immediately after breaking up with a partner.

The researchers said: "Men in first partnerships displayed better mental health than those who remained single, whereas women who remained single displayed equally good mental health to those in their first partnership and better health than those who had experienced a partnership spilt.

"This is further support for the finding that single men display more distress than married men and vice versa for women."

The team suggested that the Government should review the law on cohabitation rights as the lack of financial and property protection leading to security concerns may explain women's poorer mental health than those who marry.

They also said separation and divorce support organisations should target women who experienced multiple splits.

I'd consider myself a feminist, and have been told I'm not exactly scary to look at. It has less to do with seeking the advancement of women over men, but rather is a method of political examination of current events. Doesn't dicate conclusions, either, but does indeed hold to certain fundamental principles.

The fact that some folk wonder if there are ever any 'good looking ones' does hint that some attitudes might still need a bit of polishing...

it is an interesting article. i agree with moonbeam, but one can't help but wonder...
naturally, the whole species would die out if all women decided to stay single. but less stress doesn't mean you are happier. so, altho an interesting argument, it is rediculous. and stupid.
anyway. as to the feminist thing. i know plenty of gorgeous feminists. plenty.
(/restrains self from going on rant) so there.

BTW in case anyone does'nt know if women don't have sexual activity they can get certain conditions that are really bad for them. I'm too lazy to do the research but i'm sure someone will for me,please?

Not necessarily , just because a woman stays single doesn't mean she can't get impregnated by either artificial insemination or by allowing oneself to "be bred" specifically for the cause of reproducing. The species would survive as there would be enough men out there that would be willing to consent to siring offspring. If that were to be the case then one would think that only the best genetic males would be used for breeding.

But personally , I totally enjoy men , wouldn't want to be without one ..... well not for any length of time anyhow.:D

tbh I think most guys have a problem with feminists as women really seem to have become the dominant force in society in recent years. When was the last time you saw women blatantly discriminated against? Yet there's discrimination against men everywhere you look these days. I see jobs advertised as "manageress wanted", women only gym's etc. on a fairly regular basis and to be honest I've no problem with it as I can understand women wanting to be able to go to a gym where there are no men ogling them etc. However, what does irk me is that if this was reversed, the men involved would end up in court faster than you could say "lorena bobbit"...

The problem with the article would appear to be that it doesn't decide whether the women have problems because they are married or because they are dependant.

I'm a guy but I'm pretty set on staying single for the rest of my life. Relationships are too much hassle.

    HAHAHAHAHA :)
Yeah welcome to the age of equality...
So all this article tells us is that women STILL dont know what they want

Women staying single!! good god the day that happens I'm emigrating to Finland (you seen Finnish women phaaaarr!!)

where's the fun in women staying single!! I'm not getting sucked into the whole communist/feminist debate i don't know any feminist's therefore i cant comment on what there like.

But i do agree with skittishkitten, i love being in relationships and being with girlfriends in general, granted sex on tap is always a big bonus when your in a relationship I've been single for long enough to know that when your in a relationship its far more satisfying than when your not

well, maybe women when they are married accord less time and importance at themselves than single ones.
when you have to make concessions it's often in the detriment of your wishes and your personality.
on the other hand a life without a real relationship is not sain, a woman need a man shoulder to put her head when she feels tired and lost:)

She's not. She's French as far as I know.

Anyway, a lecturer told us in class once that a feminist is somebody who believes in female equality, whether they be female or male.

    That makes no sense..

As I said, not my particular viewpoint. I think it's a bit mad myself to be honest.

but female equality beteen female and male does'nt make sense. Anyway feminism criticism in literaturn is women trying to find the presence of women or the lack of in literature and then bitch about how they ar enot in it and how they should be or if they are in it how they were oppressed by men.

Why not, are you thick? It's a perfectly simple concept. A man believing women should have equal rights = feminist. There are lots of male feminists.
