Why NTL "1 off connections" so expensive?

My next door neighbour in a terrace of houses has NTL. I want to get connected now but NTL say it will cost me €550 which seems crazy expensive. Surely they can just run a cable for no more than 5 metres and attach some sort of junction box and or booster?
So far they have not explained why it would be so much i'm getting a real "take it or leave it" attitude.

    Is this normal?

Or, to put it another way, I only want it for Channel 4 and the BBC. Do I have any other options or are NTL effectively a monopoly in Dublin city centre?

    Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks

    V

If you and your next door neighbour get on well, then offer to split the cost of NTL between you, and run your own 5 metre cable from his gaff.. *

    :D

    * Note: I might not be being serious here.

Well if you have Sky, get yourself a UK FTV card (see the satellite forum for more details) and you'll get the lot - BBC, ITV1/UTV, C4, C5 etc :)

    That's, er, that's just staggering.

I'll agree with Kaiser2000 on the satellite and FTV card route if that's possible to do. If you get a regular Sky install, the current installation charge is €15, the family pack (for example) is €26.99 per month, which will give you far more TV after 12 months than with NTL and you own the box at the end. Get an FTV card for a one-off charge of £23.50 (see the satellite forum for details) and you're still ahead. Source a box and dish yourself and just go with the FTV card (if all you really want is BBC & C4) and it's cheaper again.

    €550, good lord.
