I cut some on Saturday morning, turned twice yesterday and today. If the weather is there turning it twice can bring it along alot Heavy stuff will hopefully bale on Wednesday.

Last year my hay only got two turns and one row up. It was perfect cause of the weather and wasn’t to thick a crop. This year it could do with four turns but if the weather breaks down Friday I’ll have to make do with 3 turns.

TThere's a fierce dew every morning and very high humidity. A lot of moisture in the air. Not easy make top quality hay in these circumstances

See it's giving rain for Friday. Might have to wrap Thursday evening. I cut yesterday, it's a heavy crop but a good dry/sandy field. Thought I'd get it saved Friday but don't think it's worth the risk now

I just tried a few samples from different fields, all cut Saturday

using the microwave to dry it out and working the % moisture from the weight at the beginning and when dried out

    12 pm 25%

    12.30 pm 25%

    3 pm 20%

    3.30 pm 16%

I might try the first few fields again after 6 pm and see what head way they made

2 mins full power. With small glass of water in with it to prevent burning the hay. Weigh again. Then 1 min and weigh, and repeat till the weight stays the same.

yeah same here this morning but that should disappear after 10 in the morning I would be hoping. really don't want it rowed up until after 2 in the day anyway and would like it left for a at least an hour this but shouldn't be any more green bits in it

how much are lads paying for rowing and balling hay think I paid 10 last year so will probably be higher but at the same time that seems expensive

Heavy dew and a bit foggy here. Buring off quick though should be well gone in the next hour. Always the sign of a good day

Will be lunchtime before any turning.

Dense fog early this morning another heavy dew here in the Midlands. Will turn out once today and plan to bale tomorrow. No panic as weather looks to be holding here until Friday.

Made 76 rounds yesterday, I rowed myself. He is charging 7 to make the bale, add 2 if he uses the rake.

I paid 500 euro going out the gate so got a 30 euro discount. I thought it was good value considering and I am pleased with the service I get.

I had a crew before him a while back for silage and they were messy, leaving bits not picked up, throwing plastic empties around, bits of black plastic too. Along with Cola cans and burger boxes. Fierce annoying that carry on

someone told me yesterday he paid 4 a bale last year I thought that was for Notting he said I was overpaying but I think he’s just lucky. How many bales did you get to the acre? Some of mine is very heave and other fields are light so it’s have to put an estimate on it. About 13acres in total

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,964 ✭✭✭emaherx

No excuse for littering fields, that sort of carry on would annoy me too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,254 ✭✭✭Dickie10

anyone give up making their own hay and buy it in instead ? I only ever use. Around 8-10 bales a. Year.going to buy it from now on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,440 ✭✭✭limo_100

can’t see hay being too expensive this year. They be a lot made this week and a lot made good. Prob 30 a bale. Although I don’t think of if sold mice at that there wouldn’t be a lot in it for me. Wouldn’t lose but wouldn’t be made up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 832 ✭✭✭Silverdream

just over 11 acres, heavy long stuff the meadows were closed since last September so about 6-7 per acre.

I know a few men that make great stuff each year snd any year that’s dodgy Robinsons always have top stuff for horse industry. I just found I’d be messing around for days getting Balers, rakes fixed up and ready and all the time lost at it , and space taken up with 40 plus bales that are left for years , I’d b better to get 8/10 dropped fresh in yard each august .
