It will be a massive scramble for tickets for the Sunday. Trains from Dundalk already sold out, a number of supporter buses already full and trying to get second and third ones. And thats just from the Wee County

Ah their mad up there though, three generations of families travelling in a lot of cases, it was really noticable at last years leinster final, from tiny babies with no teeth, to auld lads missing most of theirs.

Some Galway/Dublin lads will spend near a week thinking about whether they will go or not. That's the difference.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Hard match to call aswell, given how Monaghan have upped the levels lately. I always think it is funny that their centre half back is the Monaghan main scoring threat.

I was thinking naming the all stars for this year in the half back line will be a nightmare to pick, All three from Westmeath definitely in the mix, Ward with Monaghan definitely should get a mention, Meath I am not so sure give their defensive issues. But Keoghan might get a nomination given his level of service etc. That's before we even get to the usual picks from the finalists and semi finalists.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Yeah I am already annoyed I missed the train tickets, though I am sure they will put on more

10+ will come from the finalists and the others from semi finalists.

You'll get the odd player from other teams.

It's not really a fair reflection but that's the way it is.

For example Michael Langan is definitely one of the best footballers in Ireland but won't get an All Star.

    Likewise Oisin Conaty.

Hope cork beat mayo , mayo fans are some of the most annoying to watch games at the campsight.

Driscoll of Cork is having a mighty season too.

Tyrone are no great shakes though? They squeaked past a very average Mayo team at home. I don't think there's a ton that's special about them outside of Morgan. I honestly think Kerry could paste them.

As for Donegal, I had a feeling there could be an upset there. I do think there was something missing with them and even if they'd gotten to a final, not sure they ever had the squad depth, even though there are some great individuals there. They looked absolutely gassed on Sunday though.

I wonder will a few lads from Armagh, Donegal etc say to themselves this winter we're not within an asses roar of Kerry n sod this inter county caper. It has to have been a fairly soul destroying weekend for some of em

I heard one interesting thing on the Indo podcast from Conan Doherty. He referenced McGuinness in the post match interview complaining that he hasn't as much control anymore. He looks a beaten man and maybe the game has moved on without him.

McGuinness and McGeeney were initially big critics of the new rules. They now have less power to slow games down and maintain control of the game. Meanwhile other lesser teams throwing caution to the wind and kick passing more are prospering. Persisting with the possession game has exhausted Donegal legs.

Doubt Donegal would be thinking that having beaten them 3 times this season whatever their issues.

Armagh are probably at the end of their cycle alright but they maxed out with what they had. Without really any minor or under 20/21 success to speak of it was extraordinary they turned over Kerry in 2024 and wouldn't have been a surprise had they won on Saturday.

The difference for them is that the likes of Rian O Neill and Grimley aren't there now. O Neills flair is something they lack with the insistence on running the ball.

The 3 weeks in a row schedule is tough. Sure the 2A reward is direct to the quarters but the hurling final winners get 4 weeks to the semis.

On the quarter draw. I kind of expected Tyrone v Kerry and Galway v Dublin to be drawn against each other. Massive opportunity for the other 4 to make a semi final.

When you lose it is a very short turnaround of a week. You are far better off to lose Round 1 than Round 2A.

Probably much easier to go week on week when winning.

That's nearly a reason to give round 1 winners home advantage in round 3 at least. 2A losers should be treated like group runners up from the previous format IMO.

As a Mayoman, pretty delighted with a quarter final to be honest. Wasn't expecting it after the drubbing by Roscommon earlier in the year.

At least Kobe McDonald gets a chance to shows his skills in Croke Park before he leaves. A shame for Mayo as marquee forwards was always an issue.

Duscussing it with few lads and our conclusion was that Jim especially and Kieran are control freaks. Jim definately needs two weeks between games to analyse and instruct his team. I think I heard that MM and one other player were only allowed to attemp 2 pointers from play. Part of MM job was to give direction on the field. Itwas obvious for the FH of extra time when it was 13 aside and MM was BCed the team was at 6&7's.

One good point a lad made was the second Kerry goal. The FB Jason Foley got a turnover and charge out he saw Rafferty between him and the Kerry FF line. He Ki ked the ball which woukd have been at odds with JMG coaching and thinking. JF recognised that something was on, Clifford then went up wuth two Armagh playerx and the third tracked behind to mop up a breaking ball Clifford recognising this tapped the ball towards Paul Geany.

In most county structures players are allowed to think for themselves not with Jimmy especially and probably not with Kieran either

Quite the opposite with Clifford for the Geaney goal. He realised the Armagh man was going with the fist and stayed down for the break. He didn't even compete. Luckily it fell into Geaneys chest anyway after the Armagh man punched it down.

Don't know what the armagh full back was at, it was an easy uncontested catch and he went with the fist and made a balls of it.

I know I am biased. But Craig Lennon is up there, again, with the best wing backs in the country.

Kerry are pretty structured to in how they play; they just have a strong emphasis in quick attacks, and as there is no one quicker than a kicked ball, they kick the ball more.

They have better quality ball players than most though.

In terms of structure, when they have the ball possession is nearly entirely dominated by Paidi, Big Joe, SOS, Breen and both wing backs. It looks like both midfielders jobs don't are almost sidelined in this phase of the game.

For example in all Ireland last year both spent a lot of time in around square while Paidi was running the game around midfield. They were never getting the ball but they tied up two Donegal men.

I think the players listed above are given huge freedom but we are talking about a generational talent in D Clifford and football's Pirlo in P Clifford; they along with SOS don't need much coaching.

Also they are really structured how they bring D Clifford into game. There's no 50/50 balls sent his way, probably to avoid giving defenders a chance to nail him and also his presence alone causes chaos and he is often a decoy.

They have picked a team with four midfielders plus SOS coming back just to get the edge for kick outs.

If they continue with getting more possession or even break even nobody is going to beat them.

I was at the game Saturday and watched the highlights on YouTube GAA plus. I couldn't believe they left out Dylan Geaneys first point. He was running almost parallel to ending on right hand side and at full speed kicked with his right foot from the tightest of angles. It is only a score the most confident of forwards would take on and get.

It's quite the full forward line now serviced by the lads listed above.

Panic in the heat of the moment. He knows Rafferty is gone and he has Clifford and Geaney in his eye line. Just pure panic and an unlucky break

Somebody might of said it already but half the teams in AI are division 2 next season and one that’s just been promoted to division 1.

2 of top 4 in league division one out and Mayo absolutely blessed that the ref bailed them out against meath which would of just left Kerry as only top 4 league team left!

Dublin, Monaghan , Louth , cork and Tyrone (x2) all beating division 1 teams in playoffs so it’s not just div 1 knocking each other out.

And very few games we’re thumpings with most games looking in the balance for most of the game.

Really suggests the gap at upper Division 2 and Division 1 (bar Kerry) is little on the day. Also looks like division 2 next season could be a belter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,207 ✭✭✭robbiezero

Other player is obviously Langan. It seemed to me that Langan got very tired towards the end and McGee thought to himself F this, I'm taking on a few shots now or we are f**ked and put two over in a row. I couldn't believe how few attempts they took on into the scoring goal in the 2nd half.

I would also say that the first goal is something you probably wouldn't see from a Donegal or Armagh - That kick into Dylan Geaney - That goes 10 yards backwards or sideways if you are Donegal or Armagh.

In fairness when one quarter of Division One gets relegated each season, logic would suggest that it is a fleetingly rare occurrence that the best 8 teams are ever in that division. And even if they are, then 2 of them are going to be relegated in the next renewal.

And for Division 2, half the teams in it every year won't be in it the following year, so the concept of 'Division 2 standard' is very nebulous.

Not having a go at the system as 2 up, 2 down keeps excitement to the final set of group games, but it definitely means you can't read much into what it means for overall comparision come the championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,207 ✭✭✭robbiezero

It will be savage. Any 2 out of Derry, Tyrone, Dublin, Louth, Monaghan could get promoted.

Wexford will go straight back down and likely one of Down or Cavan (Cavan for me), but the other 5 will need to be gung ho from Day 1 as any slip ups and they could be in relegation bother or even Sam Maguire bother.

Just announced that Paul Clancy 2 time all ireland winner with Galway has passed away, only 49.

Class player, Galway had a great forward line in those days such a lovely team to watch, Joyce, Donnellan, Savage, Fallon, Clancy, Finnegan all top class players.

EDIT: I know they release more as it goes but still, a lot of the lower tiers gone it seems.
