PS5 Digital is €600 now (feck me I thought it was about €400) so €500 more for a bundle with a controller.

What's Plus nowadays? €50? So ten years of membership to break even or say 3-5 years if you buy a lot of games with the savings available on PC games.

    LOL

Theyve sold 6m Steam Deck max since it launched?

Makes a PS5 Pro seem reasonable.

Honestly don't see why you'd get one over a PlayStation.

I built my last PC to trounce a PS5 nearly 6 years ago and the specs far outclassed that. 8GB of VRam is not good in this day and age.

Read on Bluesky it was originally meant to be 750 for the base model.

Still would have found it pretty expensive at that tbh, but would have been a bit more palatable. I'm definitely the type of prime d*ckhead who loves having the new shiny thing (and it's why if I was going to buy it I'd just go for it and get the 2TB model), but just going to have to find something a little less shiny to spend my money on instead, especially when I already have a PS5 Pro, decent enough PC with 4060, and a Steamdeck.

I wonder what the specs are? (CPU and GPU, maybe some AMD APU) I haven't been following it so forgive me. I do own a Series X and a 9850X3D and 9070 PC that really only used for browsing and the odd game. I play majority on Xbox.

I wonder why they didn't go 8 core. It is 2026 after all.

Also worth bearing in mind you lose a lot of the upgradability of a standard PC. I believe the only relatively straightforward upgrades are storage and RAM. That’s part of the deal with a console or handheld, but a definite drawback when the machine is already running on an older generation of hardware. A compromise that’d be easier to take if AI companies weren’t hogging memory and driving up prices.

    Here's my son's comparrison:

    Steam Deck: 1.63 TFLOPS
    PlayStation 5: 10.28 TFLOPS
    Xbox Series X: 12.1 TFLOPS
    Steam Machine: 17.56 TFLOPS
    PlayStation 5 Pro: 18.05 TFLOPS
    7900 XTX: 61.44 TFLOPS

The last is cos its in my gaming PC.

I used to own a 7900 XTX but sold it while it was still worth something as like I said in post above I play mostly on Xbox. I like to run benchmarks though which is the main reason I own a gaming PC. I like to push the limits of my hardware.

Looks like we can just turn our own PCs into Steam Machines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,007 ✭✭✭✭cnocbui

I'm the opposite, hardly touch the xbox since building the PC.

New screenshot of Kojima's game OD. He says this will be a new level of horror experience. I just hope it makes it to PlayStation.

He seems to have retained ownership of death stranding so hopefully he has a similar deal with MS.

He said Phil Spencer was the only one who saw the vision, wouldn't be surprised if it was agreed as exclusive then but who knows these days.

It's a shame the Steam Machine pricing is so high.

It's a lovely low power, quiet, tiny living room and desktop gaming PC. You could not build one that size, power consumption and noise level for that price currently.

So, it's not really a rip off. Blame Sam Alternative Man.

€1039 is way beyond the "I deserve a little present" budget.

I'd earmarked €600 when first announced as a level I'd be okay with. I've been away from desktop pc gaming for a few years (theres a 1070 in my pc). So this felt like a nice no fuss way to jump back in.

Even as prices pushed up and a few YouTubers that build PCs started saying it's going to be closer to 700 maybe 800 at a push, I was still at least 80/20 that id get it.

But it's going to be very hard to pay over a grand for it. My PS5 Pro blows it out of the water so I'm not going to play any high powered games on it. So it will be purely streaming and small indie games.

I picked up a micro pc on AliExpress for €100 a while back that is a fraction of the size , runs windows, and can handle most simple tasks, streaming, cloud gaming and plays low spec game without a bother. I have the steam deck too that fits that bill.

So this would be a real unnecessary luxury outlay for a not very luxurious product.

Their choice of underpowered laptop chip hurts it a lot at this price point. For over a €1000 you would expect €1000 level performance.

That’s a shocker of a price but no surprise. Not a chance I’ll be buying that. These prices are not sustainable so best to wait for the bubble to burst

could be a while, data centers are only increasing, and the silly amount of data centers planned in US is staggering. China is also up to no good with their ai models sucking everything from the internet. i bought 64GB DDR5 1 year ago for €235, now it's like 3 times that. imagine buying that in bulk if you predicted the market from a year from then

I can only imagine the price of the next Gen consoles.

We will be back in 3DO territory.

We're genuinely at a point where presuming the PS6 won't be released until Nov 2028, you'd have to start putting by 35-40 a month now to have enough saved up by then.

I suppose it's a good thing the PS5 still doesn't feel like it's gotten off the ground yet.

I just wish Sony would re-think their PC strategy so I can save money on another console generation.

There will be an AI industry crash, because the numbers involved are made-up gibberish and barely any companies are making any significant revenue from their endless investment and resource hogging. It’s one of the most bubbly of economic bubbles. How long it’ll take to burst is the question.

That said, I don’t think there’s any harm in consoles sticking around a bit longer - given the diminishing returns in compute power, it feels like the generational jumps are less significant every time. And development times are getting so long that some studios are barely managing to get games out within a console’s traditional lifespan. That said, I still think the price tags for next gen are going to be mental unless the bubble finally bursts in the next year or so.

I'm delighted I bought the PS5 Pro at launch. At the time, I thought it was crazy money, but now it looks like the bargain of a life time.

    *not limited to AI industry.

It's more a question of when and how much it will **** up everyone's pensions and savings.

There was a shoe manufacturing company which decided to stop making shoes and instead became an AI-focused company.

    So yeah… we're all f*cked.

I joined the waiting list just in case…..I fully accept I have a hardware buying problem. 😥

Just wondering, will games on Steam now require to be optimised for the Machine? Would that affect dev time/costs? It's a low bar, especially for more modern games. So i assume some future games won't be compatible/optimised unless Steam force them, which defeats the purpose of developing on pc imo. Is it the same with the Deck?
