I understand the logic, it’s just very flawed. If they added another week, then the ones who won their first two playoff games would still get an advantage with 3 weeks.

I’d prefer to see 4 QF ties with more then half the teams rested and fully fit. Doesn’t make sense to try and handicap half the QF teams.

I would. I doubt they will get to that pitch again this weekend and also while it was a brilliant game to watch, the quality was only ok, shooting really poor, everything played through the hands.

It seemed like only Langan of Donegal was allowed shoot from anywhere outside 35 yards from goal (until McGee decided it was time for someone else to have a few shots), Galway will have much more 2 point threat than Donegal. Also as the game went on Dublin wiped out a lifeless Donegal on the kickouts - that won't happen v Galway.

I'm expecting a reasonably comfortable win for Galway, but it is a massive game for them. They have done nothing yet this year and if they don't win this one, I'm not sure where that team and management go from there.

I still disagree, each team knew the format before any game was played. If they wanted a 2 week break for the QF then it was up to them to win their 2 qualifier games.

Maybe 3 weeks is too much of a break for the winners and they lose their momentum? I think it's fine as is.

Galway, Louth, Tyrone and Cork did their business in the qualifiers and are rewarded. I don't see any issue with that.

I think it will be this, and the 2 on Saturday will be GAA plus

    Saturday

    Cork vs Mayo

    Tyrone vs Kerry

    Sunday

    Louth vs Monaghan

    Galway vs Dublin

Everybody knowing the format doesn’t make it the right format. Everybody knew the potential for the Dublin v Donegal game to blend into the hurling but it didn’t make it right that the powers that be didn’t play the game a bit earlier like RTE requested.

There’s zero advantages given to provincial winners and more advantages to teams who have already lost a game but win 2 playoff games, it’s just wrong.

But I say again, by QF stage of any major tournament, I’d of thought most fans and teams would prefer equal chances for all. The rules are the rules but they reduce the chances of quality battles and only increase chances of 4 teams running out of steam (3 cause kerry have 2 teams).

3 weeks without a game would be a disadvantage as thats too much rest, chances of getting ring rusty. The entire GAA calendar makes no sense. The provincials cause endless hassle, dispense with them and we won't be making up endless formats to try to please everyone

Second best draw for Louth. Either way it'll be good having Louth/Monaghan in a semi final.

Cork/Mayo likewise. However I can't see past my two favourites Dublin/Kerry joining them.

I'm on the verge of a site ban. Please don't rage bait me, I'm easily triggered especially late at night!

I don’t think any team who gets to a QF should be at a disadvantage. The way the game has changed , any advantage is massive and we’ve seen some cracking games between well matched teams.

I don’t see why there should be advantages given in any knockout tournament, that always feels like backdoors for stronger teams and more revenue are the primary drivers , not fairness or teams doing things on merit.

I’d rather it go back to when you lose you are out then “punish” half the QF qualifiers. Ironically none of the QFs who are getting the benefits of winning the two playoffs would be in it.

I cant see it being comfortable at all, it isnt the Galway way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,771 ✭✭✭dobman88

One standout from the post match interviews at the weekend was Con O Callaghan and Jack O Connor saying that their respective teams had a good weeks training and that's how you know where fellas are at while Jim McGuinness said he didn't think a team in the country were training and alluded to Donegal being unable to train last week.

He's a complete spoofer. I said before he put so much into beating kerry in what are pretty much meaningless games that he took his eye off the ball for other teams. A massive backfire by him for Donegal.

The provincials have remained faithful to their format for well over a hundred years. Straight knockout all the way, and in recent times they have done away with replays. When they were completed in the old days, there were just 4 counties left standing. It is the bolting on of a system to give all the also rans a couple of more chances which has caused endless hassle.

The GAA calendar is a work of art, finalised before any game of any description is played. People come up with wondrous amendents in their heads as the season progresses.

For personal reasons I'd like Cork v Mayo and Kerry v Tyrone on Sunday.

Dublin traditionally had the Saturday evening fixture and the most high profile was on a Sunday at 4 and the least profile as the first game on Saturday

Kerry v Tyrone is the most high profile, Louth v Monaghan is the least profile.

Plus Kerry have been on GAA+ for at least 2 possibly 3 weeks now, and two have been big games v Donegal and Tyrone.

It may be time to throw them a FTA bone.

Rest days don't come into it, they haven't in the past so why should they now.

So Saturday Louth v Monaghan and Galway v Dublin both GAA+

Sunday Mayo v Cork and Kerry v Tyrone, both RTE.

Yeah likely Louth and Monaghan paired with the Dubs match. Maxmise the crowd. Although in saying that if the pattern with Dublin crowds stays the same. Maybe even Louth alone might out number the Dubs!?

There was massive Donegal support yesterday in Croke Park, fair dues to them. It was like being up in Ballybofey. All very confident pre - throw in . Seemed to be in shock afterwards.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Donegal losing to Down, Cork at home and Dublin is some turn of events given how Donegal were playing just a month ago.

I think they peaked in order to lay down a marker with Kerry twice. Winning in current format is all about timing peak for late June July if you can survive that way.

Its been such a funny year so far anything is possible now.

Kerry mugged by Tyrone before but Kerry very very streetwise since with big players trying to get back in a new scoring threat in Dylan Geaney to complement Clifford.

If a rested Tyrone peak it'll be some game; they have the scoring threat just not sure they'll get enough ball but you never know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,659 ✭✭✭Dogsdodogsstuff

Kerry traditionally have always been masters at peaking at the right time. So many times they’d look relatively ordinary and at QF/SF theyd lay down a serious marker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,435 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Yeah. with the forwards Tyrone have always a chance they could have a hot streak. It's against Kerry though.

I was 100% sure that Donegal wouldn't flop three times in a year, particulary the way Dublin were playing. I don't know what went wrong with Donegal at all losing those three matches. Flopping against Kerry in the AI final last year.

Are Donegal over training or something?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

    Official now

Cork v Mayo then Tyrone v Kerry Saturday

Louth v Monaghan then Galway v Dublin Sunday.

    My prediction was totally wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,659 ✭✭✭Dogsdodogsstuff

Fair to give Monaghan and Dublin a week at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 24,787 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

It should be no surprise to anyone that Dublin are in the last 8. They always get to the last 8.

Wonder if Sunday will get a close to a sellout.

Not sure what sort of Galway contingent will be there but you’d of thought Monaghan and Louth fans would fancy their chances of a SF spot. Monaghan maybe not so much as they didn’t even turn up at home to Westmeath.

Prob will be a few more fair weather dubs , used to drive my dad mad when my sister would all of a sudden want to goto games when there was talk of a bumper crowd. Loved that he’d never get her a ticket for sellouts , would give them to hardcore fans that goto all games, she’d go mad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,435 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Kerry will have a massive support with the Cork crowd supporting their fellow Munster Gaels…..🤣

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,435 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Louth fans are big supporters I doubt they leave anyone back in Louth hardly I would say per capita they will bring the most easy, given there is a bit of neighbourly familiarity for Monaghan might bring them out too. Galway you wouldn't know there is a chunk of the Galway support who are more bothered about the hurling.

The Dublin fans? I think many forgot Dublin were playing matches at all this year. Lads might hear from yesterday that the Dubs won… "jayus I might go to that" etc etc. They might not remember where they kept the Dublin jerseys though that could be a problem….

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Great that either Louth or Monaghan will be in the sei final, probably like to see Louth win as Monaghan have been in a semi in the last decade or so and for Louth it's been over 65 years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,964 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

Really poor scheduling imo Cork v Mayo and Tyrone v Kerry will hardly get big crowds, I'd say no more than 45k will be there, with 35K being from Mayo and Tyrone.

i would have though Cork v Mayo would be better paired with Dublin v Galway.

Maybe they don't want 3 sets of fans coming from the north on the same day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,932 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Was thinking the same. I would also think Cork and this current Mayo team would have been delighted with a semi final at the start of the season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,110 ✭✭✭✭threeball

Are the semis open draw or pre-determined

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 744 ✭✭✭poppers

fairest option is to give all same recovery time.

monaghan and dub both played yesterday,

Kerry and Mayo both played sat so all rd3 winners have same break and no one can complain they have been hard done by.

That's stupid saying they should have won their games if they wanted a 2 week break! Like do you not think every team was not trying to win their games ?!
