? lol! 😂 It’s a national football team, representing their country.
Of course the national anthem has to be played at the start of every game.
Imagine only hearing the French national anthem at the first group stage game and not for the rest of the tournament!
    Crazy suggestion!

bad result for Ecuador, good result for Scotland

France vs Germany in the last 16 is a big game happening relatively early

Well the real crime there is the whole concept of some 3rd place teams qualifying.

Never understood people complaining about commentators, like change the channel, turn off the audio if its really that bad and now we are talking about national anthems . That user must have a jam packed life if he cant sit through 2 notational anthems.

Per BBC predictor (knowing it can of course change) England have a really tough route even to the last 8.

They first have Portugal. If they win that it is Mexico (which will be played in Mexico I think) or Spain.

US have a very winnable path with Ecuador, New Zealand and the Czechs.

1986, 1990, and 1994 all had third place finishers getting into the next round, when they were reducing 24 to 16.

Recent Euros have been the same.

Yet people act like it's a completely new concept, thought up by FIFA and the yanks for this world cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,538 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

I think you need to check that USA path. Ecuador and the Czechs are probably heading home after the group unless major upsets occur and you’re saying New Zealand are going to find themselves in a quarter final!!!

I like the anthems at the start of the games, especially as we get into the knockouts. And it's an great feeling being at a tournament or away game and hearing your anthem being played.

Can definitely add another layer to the game, think back to how the Argentinian anthem was booed before they played Italy in 1990 and Maradona's reaction

BBC predictor shows the brackets as all groups currently stand (which I guess due to the way 3rd place teams currently are, would mean USA play Ecuador).

As per the Athletic's predictor (which shows percentage chance), USAs most likely opponent is Bosnia & England's is Congo.

Ecuador have one point on the board and play Germany next so how any model predicts them as qualifying is beyond me. I’m not saying people are misreading or misleading us on the bbc model, I’m just saying it’s not a good model.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,174 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

Maybe taking into account that Germany have already won the group?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,420 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Its not a model just a live table. Its handy visual tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,538 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Ecuador need a win to qualify unless 2 points could qualify them (i dont think that’s likely). Models are meant to work on most likely occurrences so this model seems to think the likeliest result is Ecuador beating Germany which is a model i want no part in.

but maybe the model thinks 2 points will qualify teams (Ecuador drawing with Germany is still a tall order)? It’s the first I’ve heard of it if so.

Looks to me like Scotland will go through even if Brazil spank them.

I never really got the idea that 3pts was the minimum. That was never said so was off course possible that 2 could be enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,538 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

sorry yeah you’re correct. It’s handy eventually but not where teams have only played one game. It’s too early for it to be of any use.

Considering there's already 3 groups where the third place has 3 points, I'd say it's unlikely 2 points will be enough.

Only 6/12 groups have played their second match.

3 points will be the minimum required imo. Goal difference will be key. I'm assuming it goes to GD after points and not H2H.

There are a lot of games tipped to be essentially 3rd place playoffs so we will see at least some of them bump groups up to 3 or 4 point 3rd place groups.

It's gonna be tight but I can see how a 2 pointer makes it if we get a load more draws.

Can't really use head-to-head comparing across groups in fairness!

3 points rarely is enough to get through historically - though this might be different as there's a wider gulf in some of the groups, so they're not as tight

I wonder are Tunisia going to sack their stand-in manager today?

Theres only 4 teams eliminated. Group A and B could easily end up with their 3rd place team having 2 points if South Africa/Czechia draw their game while the other one looses (Group A), for group B if Bosnia/Qatar draw both of them have 2 pts so 3rd AND 4th will have 2 pts. In Group E if Ecuador draw with the already qualified Germany they'd have 2 points. Everyone in G and H only has a point so a second draw in those groups would have 3rd place finishing on 2pts. In Group K if Congo loose to Colombia and draw with Uzbekistan they'd be in 3rd with 2 points.

So its possible 6 3rd place teams could finish on 2 points. With only 4 to be eliminated that'd mean at least 2 teams with 2 points would make it.

I say at least because if Algeria vs. Jordan, Panama vs Croatia and Senegal vs Iraq all ended with draws while loosing their other matche you would then end up with 3 3rd (and 4th) place teams on a single point meaning 5 of the 6 2pt finishers would end up qualifying but since its likely that Algeria, Croatia and Senegal would win they'd have at least 3 points so go through on at least 3 pts if not as a second place team depending on other results.

I've not seen anyone acting like it's a new FIFA/yank thing to be honest… I think it's the opposite. We've had shite 3rd rounds for the Euros for a decade now, so we know it's shite, and recently sandwiched in the middle was an absolute blinder of a 3rd round in Qatar, where permutations were changing by the minute.

Like, I think we all know from lived experience that when 2 go through, it's great craic, and when 3 go through it's a bit of a bore. The World Cup has had 30 years of fun ones, so it's disappointing to be joining the fun-vacuum we've been dealing with in Europe.

That poster keeps trying to bate in regards to people's dislike of the US and they are not the only ones. Every day seems to be a post about how great this World Cup is and we even had another well known "America is the best at everything poster" claim 1000 dollar tickets are a good thing to keep out the "riff raff"

Four third-placed teams eliminated. Either Iran or Egypt (or both) will go through so some guaranteed interest for the Middle East in the next stage. Iran improved as the game with Belgium progressed but a good English championship side could beat them? Jordan will probably have to beat Algeria?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,174 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

that Uruguay ‘wall’ let themselves down, they let their teammates down, they let their school down.,,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,025 ✭✭✭Dr Robert

US v Iran in the last 32 is real possibility now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Is it not completely impossible? USA have won the group and will play a 3rd place team from a set of groups which doesn't include the Iran group?

L16 remains possible though if Iran win their group.

Could we "super-bloat" it to 64 and top 2 only go through?, love Gianni.
