It's gonna loose quality of course, you've seen the silage threads, pushing for 24 to 36 at most, but you can't save hay if it's not ready on the 4th day.

If your not mowing till Monday then confirm the weather on the farming forecast tomorrow before you commit.

ah that’s the app on I phone. That changes 20 times a day. I wouldn’t be replying on that either way

I will. I have 9acres down from yesterday so I will get that much done at least. Hopefully try get it by wed / Thurs.

Dunno much about hay but lads give out about shaking it twice in the day aswell. Maybe tedders are less severe on grass than a haybob I dont know. The man in the parish who always makes hay has stuff knocked last night i presume he mowed it. Thats always a good sign of a good week, seen him wait until August to make stuff before.

11 acres cut, I thought I'd have more down but the last meadow the ground is still soft and wet, so I left that.

I've about 75 small squares to make from silage ground that he failed to pick up last weekend, it was rained on all week, yet it has come into hay, so I rowed it up and will bale in the afternoon. I was surprised as I thought it would be gone into dung, but it's not bad at all

just checked the met eireann forcast. There giving for a chance of showers now Thursday. If I mow my last field tomorrow will it be for my Thursday mid day at the earliest

I don't subscribe to the don't tedd for two days mantra. Also if the weather is good enough and dew lifts early I would to two tedds in a day.

10 acs cut yesterday with disc mower, hopefully lighter stuff ready to bale Wednesday to take the pressure off

No right or wrong way. It’s fully weather dependent. If weather is good and settled, you could nearly miss a day turning, if weather is to break, then a second turn will definitely help it but it needs to be a great hay day to merit a second turn

I agree, once a day should be sufficient and gives the stuff you turn up time to save and die off

I cut yesterday and won’t get turned u til tomorrow I would have turned today it but had to work so Notting could be done. What ever is on top now should be in great shape now

Wednesday evening or Thursday, but with 2 nice days like today. I'm in North Cork, it's roasting with sun out all day, with a breeze

Looking like most of the country will escape rain except the coastal areas on Thursday but it will be dull and overcast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,440 ✭✭✭limo_100

that’s great. It’s a pity it wouldn’t take up like this for a few weeks be nice to get the work done and actually enjoy the good weather like the rest of the country. I feel like every good spell of weather lately is a race. Got no enjoyment personal enjoyment from any of it bar getting the jobs done.

100% with you on this and also puts pressure on family life as instead of sitting around with the family and maybe having a few bbq's your racing around turning hay or bringing in silage bales etc.

And that's all on top of the day to day jobs of herding and the like.

It feels like the last few years have been this way. There used to be stretches of good weather where you could casually ring someone to mow a field Monday or Tuesday but instead we are all racing around on a Sunday praying the hay is ready by Thursday in case the weather breaks down earlier. It was 21 or 22 where the next hay slot was September.

I’ve got my hay and silage down. Very happy to have it cut after missing the first window.

some drops of rain here in south east and a bit in the radar. I hope we don’t get caught out. Happened two years ago.

I agree. Depends on the grass and conditions. Especially near the end where just the odd green bit is turning up 2 turns in a day can be totally viable

Small drop here in the Midlands this morning rained for about 5 mins. Not too heavy. Still very overcast. Not great for hay but the day is to heat up.

Rang my contractor to come Thursday all going to plan. He's under savage pressure. Every man and his dog looking for him Thursday as weather is to break. The weather this year not helping them at all.

looking like Friday will be ok now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 832 ✭✭✭Silverdream

Yep, they are chopping and changing the forecast. Weather looks set till Sunday now. They always seem to tag a "light rain shower" at the end of the 5-day forecast

Cracking day here now in the mid west. Blew up into a fine hay day since noon. I have a good bit down and its baking nicely.

    Ground is tender in spots.

Stuff cut Saturday could be ready tomorrow evening but a lot will be ready for the baler Wednesday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,694 ✭✭✭Jb1989

I didn't touch mine today with the morning having a light bit of rain and the afternoon taking a good while ro get going sunshine wise with very little breeze.

Will turn it tomorrow afternoon and then twice on Wednesday if its as hot as its forecast and hoping it should be close by then 🤞
