How did Munoz pass a Liverpool medical over there while injured with hamstring issues and has had them since Spain arrived in America for the World Cup.

Wouldn’t it have been better agreeing the deal pending a medical after the World Cup if there was any doubts over his fitness.

All decent sides on both sides of those CL games apart from the first week. Hopefully we get a decent CL draw

This is going to sound dumb, and maybe it is.

But I think a medical can be passed with a current injury particularly a small enough muscle strain, they are testing for a host of like systemic issues, rather than can he hammer the treadmill right now.

I get that but whats the thinking is this a player with lighting speed by all accounts and his injury is a hamstring injury if you can’t test the hamstring due to his current injury what if it turns out to be a recurring injury throughout the rest of his career that speed is now gone a bit like Michael Owen.

Medicals aren't binary pass/fail based on current fitness

Instead they are medical risk assessments designed to determine if there is a risk in signing a player over the long term

    Things like:

    1. Heart issues
    2. Underlying conditions in general (e.g. Ronaldo having thyroid problems)
    3. Undiagnosed issues only visible with medical scanning
    4. Baseline fitness measurements to understand if they are physically able to cope with the intensity

They'll go through medical history and injury history, assess if everything was diagnosed properly before, how they recovered previously, if they had surgery and so on - think Nabil Fekir having a dodgy knee op or Loic Remy having a heart issue

If they are currently injured that isn't an automatic fail, instead it's more how it's been managed - how often do they get that type of injury, how long do they generally take to recover and how are they currently managing the injury.

If their current injury is likely to require surgery, or if they have lingering scar tissue from a previous injury, or have any sort of heart or lung issues, it's unlikely they'd pass

But having a muscle injury right now, even if they occur frequently, might not be an issue if their general muscle recovery and load tolerance are good - everyone gets injured, what matters is how they typically react and recover

You can test for that, the ability to sprint on a treadmill isn't sufficient in a non-injured player to test the hamstring like you describe so it's not essential for an injured player either

Assuming they haven't injured both at the same time they can tell a lot from strength testing the other one and imaging of the damaged one.

They test the muscles themselves and their reaction to different sensors. Even if fully fit you don't test them by getting them to sprint.

It's a very different world to 20+ years ago. As part of the process there is a full review of the player's historical medical data. MRI scans are used to detect joint and muscle imbalance issues. ECGs are used to detect underlying heart issues. The physical examination involves assessing movement patterns, balance and coordination.

In recent years the medicals performed by the club's staff have detected underlying issues in a number of new signings and programmes were put in place to correct the issues found.

Where are you getting those dates from? The champions league matches could be on the Tuesday or Wednesday couldn't they?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,266 ✭✭✭Talisman

It's a nothing story. He had missed the last game of the season with a hamstring injury. Yamal and Williams were also recovering from injuries when they joined the national team. Williams is expected to be ready to return against Uruguay and Luis de la Fuente was hoping that Munoz would be fit to play against Saudi Arabia on Sunday. However his recovery will take at least another week.

Most likely the clickbait crews have added Victor Munoz to their search alerts or maybe they picked up the original story from Spain that mentioned not being able to play until the knockout stage is a huge blow for the guy after having just signed for Liverpool.

They will tell him to sit tight and leave on a free in two years.

Looking forward to the clash of VVD vs Isak this evening.

Isak is playing well. Created two good chances for Gyorkes.

Thiago confirmed as part of the coaching staff? Loads of click bait sites posting it and I haven't actually clicked any of the links😁. Surely that can only be a good thing. Oozes class on and off the pitch.

I just wish he'd get a number like spearing did.

<edit> i somehow read your post totally wrong… but yeah, can't find anything legit, only a 'signing' photo at Anfield that looks fairly clearly AI (and he's also out in Los Angeles right now for the WC).

I'd say massive pinch of salt with that one for the moment. Potentially a nice addition alright.

Goal and an assist for him now.

Nice play from Gravenberch in the build up too.

<edit> Now 2 goals and an assist for Gakpo.

There's a good footballer in Cody Gakpo, just needs a good coach and a bit of encouragement.Seemed to made scapegoat last season?

Another goal for Gakpo, following Isak giving away the ball poorly.

    Summerville looks lively.

    We could do with him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,893 ✭✭✭John arse

And as I say that he scores!!!😁(Again apparently, only half watching the match here)

Why can't gakpo do this for Liverpool!?

Isak helps Gakpo to a second

He has! He was literally only behind Salah in goalscoring only a season ago (18 goals 7 assists). He's been a really good signing for Liverpool - he just had a really bad season (alongside everyone else) last year, and memories are short.
