How is that begrudgery? People like that deserve ridicule.

I suppose its a legacy of british colonial rule. If you look at any of the RTE archive videos most of the news and current afairs presenters had british accents. Remember Charles Mitchell, Don Cocburn, Farrell O'Brien etc. Even Gay Byrnes accent was very anglisised. I mean where did Conor Cruise O'Brien get his British accent from?

Nobody deserves ridicule; a bit of gentle poking will do.

The Hall's Pictorial Weekly program from the 70s is a good example. They had a sketch, Cork Mothers of seven is a good example; it gently pokes fun at middle class mothers boasting about their sons: My son the engineer, my son the Doctor.

From the 1980s onwards, in Ireland, satire became nasty ridicule for some reason. I have a theory on why that happened.

A

1. The D4 accent is not "posh" or "proper". It's a grotesquery, the poor vowels mutilated almost beyond recognition.
2. Disliking an unattractive, grating accent - especially one that's generally a pretentious affectation - isn't "begrudgery".
3. You're free to escape back to the begrudgery-free, posh-accent-admiring utopia you came from any time you please.

Is it begrudgery though? I am aware that the word was supposedly made up in the halls of the RTE studios so that people could feel sorry for them being picked on by the rest of the country for getting jobs that most believed others deserved.

No, it isn't. Its endemic and it's part of the culture. It's infantile bitterness at best and outright bullying at it's worst. And it starts in the playground, which I know from my own experience since I had the misfortune to have a brain and know how to use it, until I learned the hard lesson that Irish people are innately suspicious of anyone who dares to be of an intellectual leaning. I then learned that I had to play the peasant to get along. It reaches it's peak at the hatred and hostility displayed towards, for example, Bono, who's done nothing actually wrong, but gets the kind of abuse from many individuals which would normally only be associated with sex offenders. Purely because, again, he has a brain and isn't shy of voicing his opinions. The pubs, of course, are full of ignorant half wits every night of the week mouthing their opinions and solutions to every problem. They're usually the first ones to start shouting about Bono and others. It was the same with Sinéad O'Connor. The nation went into mourning when she died but I'm old enough to remember when she first came on the scene and she got the same abuse from the same knuckle draggers.

Look up tall poppy syndrome etc. Lots of people think they are unique with this.

Abusing “D4s” has had a resurgence in the last few years. Lots of people are making money (Rory O’Hanlon) out of recycling the stuff Paul Howard did with Ross O’Carroll Kelly 25 years ago now. Some of it a new online audience, some just won’t move their “comedy” on.

As an accent it isn’t a new development. It’s been there for donkeys years. What might be is that outside of these areas some have adopted it more and it annoys people. I personally find the 2 Johnnies stuff to be more exhausting and put on at this stage. Twee performative Irishness.
