I recently purchased a smith and wesson model 41, it shot fine for a while but now it will not go into battery, the slide stop a few mill short. Has anyone had this issue. See picture.

Is it not going into battery when chanbering a round or when it is empty?

Any obstructions at the chamber side, any photos of the part of the slide which has the firing pin hole, the extractor, ejector, chamber, etc?

Never forget, the end goal is zero firearms of any type.

I tried it with recoil spring and extractor removed and still no joy.

Remove slide and check the side rails that the slide rides on, particularly the muzzle end

The slide moves freely, it's just when it's reassembled it won't slide completely forward.

    New gun or second hand?

If 2nd hand ,I'm going to ask the bleedin obvious, but did you strip and clean it yet? That looks like a gunk build up that is not allowing the gun to lock up 100% and allowing the hammer to drop.22 ammo is absolutely filthy stuff, and can gum up some firearms quickly, esp if they have too much oil in them..I've no experiance of the S&W,but usually 90% of .22s problems are solved by a white glove inspection type cleaning. So give that a try.Pay esp attention to the bolt and extractors and their recesses. If it is a NIB gun,how many rounds did you put thru it before this problem started? If its still under warranty take it back to the dealer perhaps?

Brand new gun. It shoots very well. I took it apart and cleaned it and reassembled it. It shot well after that and then after another clean the issue occurred. I have shoit about 300 rounds.

    Quick Google AI answers.

Recoil Spring Orientation: The recoil spring is slightly tapered. If it is installed backward (with the wider end on the guide rod base instead of the muzzle end), it will bind and prevent the slide from closing completely. Ensure the tight end of the spring is against the frame.

Barrel Lug Alignment: If the barrel isn't seated perfectly flush into the frame before you engage the trigger guard latch, it will misalign the feed ramp and block the bolt. Lock the slide back, make sure the barrel is seated firmly against the frame, and lock the trigger guard down tightly.

Chamber Debris or Extractor Bind: Carbon fouling can build up in the chamber or under the extractor, preventing the rim of the (22 \text{ LR}) cartridge from sitting flush against the bolt face. Remove the barrel and use a chamber brush to clean out any stubborn fouling. You can also test the extractor by slipping a cartridge under the hook on the bolt face; if it falls off, the extractor may need tuning or cleaning.

Excessive or Dry Lubrication: The Model 41 is a precision firearm. Over-lubricating can collect residue and gum up the slide rails. Conversely, running them completely dry can cause friction. Clean the slide rails thoroughly and apply a very light coat of high-quality gun oil to the rails and the recoil spring guide rod.
