Howdy, looking for a TV for my dad! At 90, he doesn't take well to change, so the highest priority is easy to use remote (simple layout) and it's only use case it for watching TV via aerial (no streaming etc!).

A good picture quality would be nice, but it's replacing a 32inch hd ready walker TV from 2012, so I'm guessing anything is likely to be an improvement! But more off a focus on full hd quality versus 4k etc. Size wise maybe 48"? Any recommended options? A wall mount would also be considered

Oh also easy to navigate the TV stations, would be a high priority, responsive changing channels etc. 43" might be a consideration as well if you could give options in that size too

    Hi Lu Tze.

    Thanks for the email.

There are very very few full HD televisions on the market.

Pretty much all TV now will have 4K capability.

It a 48" it would only be OLED with the likes of the LG 48B4 coming in at €698 delivered and including our VIP 6 year guarantee free of charge.
OLED is the best technology on the market and give by far the superior picture quality.

If you drop to a 43" then there is the LG 43NANO090A6B priced at €549 delivered and including our VIP 6 year guarantee free of charge.

NANO Cell televisions are a step upwards from standard LED.

    https://euro.richersounds.ie/p-209360-lg-43nano90a6b-6-yr-2025-6-series-43-inch-4k-ultra-hd-hdr-smart-nanocell-led-tv-freeview-play.aspx

If you just wanted a 1080p TV then LG have the 43LQ60006 priced at just €199 delivered and including our VIP 6 year guarantee free of charge.

    https://euro.richersounds.ie/p-209654-lg-43lq60006la-6yr-43-inch-full-hd-hdr-smart-led-tv-freeview-play-freesat.aspx

LG televisions are very easy to operate and the remote easy enough to use.

A wall mount for any of the above you could use the Pixel Large mount priced at just €30

    https://euro.richersounds.ie/p-208531-pixel-fixed-large-mount-black-32-70-inch-fixed-tv-bracket.aspx

    Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks very much for that. There seems to be common issues online with the 43LQ60006, the vesa mounts seem to interfere/overlap with the aerial input location Any idea if there are similar issues with placement on the other 43" (4k) you suggested? Are there brackets that allow the TV to be pulled out from the wall 6-8 inches?

Also, I gather the next size up in non oled TVs is 50 inch. Any recommendations in that range for easy navigation of the TV channels and easy to use remote?

    Hi Lu Tze.

Thanks for coming back to me.
That wasn't something I was aware of, I don't have one out on display so I can not confirm this unfortunately. There are many types of brackets and some have just two arms for mounting and some a back plate. It could be the back plate version that obstructs the inputs.

For a full motion bracket there is the Ttap which can extend about 13" from the wall.

    https://www.richersounds.ie/p-208011-ttap-404da3-26-65-inch-cantilever-tv-bracket.aspx

Moving it to a 50 there is the Samsung 50DU8000 coming in at €398

    https://euro.richersounds.ie/p-207917-samsung-ue50du8000-6yr-50-inch-4k-ultra-hd-hdr-smart-led-tv.aspx

Or from the 2025 range Philips have the 50PUS7800 priced at €439

    https://euro.richersounds.ie/p-209423-philips-50pus7800-2025-26-model-6yr-50-inch-qled-4k-ultra-hd-hdr-smart-tv.aspx

Or the LG 50NANO90A6B coming in at €529

    https://euro.richersounds.ie/p-209492-lg-50nano90a6b-6yr-50-inch-4k-ultra-hd-hdr-smart-nanocell-led-tv-freeview-play.aspx

Let me know if any of these might suit.

Thanks for the advice Kenny, I went with the 48" in the end, just put in the order there. I'm sure the Chase and Judge Judy will look all the better on the new TV 😜

Thanks so much for the order Lu Tze,

I heard Judge Judy was one of the programmes they used to calibrate the OLED panels!

We'll get that arranged for shipping asap but if you need anything in the meantime please don't hesitate to drop us a post.

    Thanks again for the business!

Howdy, bit of an issue with this TV, which maybe you have come across before and have a solution, or have a better idea on how to resolve this.

The sound disappears from one terrestrial channel (No. 8 Challenge). All other channels have sound with no issues. Unfortunately it's one of the most watched channels. The last time I made it to my dad's house (other side of the country) I couldnt reinstate the sound. Went through all the various settings I could find. The only thing I could find to bring it back was a full factory reset and reinstall all of the channels. I had tried just a manual rescan but that didn't work .

Since I was last down it's gone again. This time I connected to my hotspot and installed the latest firmware update. Still no sound on that single channel. I've tried a different aerial as well but it also doesn't have sound on that channel. I'll try and do the factory reset again and reinstall, and go through the setup so that it defaults to live tv instead of the home screen. But this isn't ideal if it goes again and I'm nearly 5 hours away, so typically my Dad will be without sound on his most watched channel for a few weeks until I can get down again.

Any ideas? Im going away again on Sunday morning.

    Hi Lu Tze.

Now that is a strange issue to be honest.
It's not something I have came across before unfortunately.

I'll drop the above details over to our service team to see if they have any issue to what might be going on and revert back as soon as I get some info.
They are closed for a few days over the Christmas period but once they return they will get back to me.
(it's most likely to be Monday before they do unfortunately).

Rather than a full factory reset, you could try unplugging it from the mains for 60 seconds and plugging in again to see if this clears it.

From a check online you could try:
Look for advanced audio settings like Dolby Digital, PCM, or Auto and try switching between them. An incompatible audio format/codec can sometimes cause a specific channel to lose sound.

Check for a SAP (Secondary Audio Program) or MTS setting in the audio menu, and ensure it's not set to an alternative language or off.

You most likely have tried these all ready.

Thanks Kenny, I've done the reset again since to get it back working. I had tried switching between Dolby sound etc previously to no avail. I'll see if I can find the other settings you mentioned for future reference for myself if it's goes again(SAP / MTS). It's very odd. If it happened on the kids cartoon channel or one of the other unused channels the issue would never have been noticed or found! Let me know if the service team have ever come across anything like this or have any ideas for a permanent fix. I have a feeling the old tv will be brought back into the room if it goes again.

    Hi Kenny,

Did you get a chance to run this by the service team? I know a lot of people aren't back to work until next week so no worries if not

  • Company Representative Posts: 18,521 ✭✭✭✭Richersounds.ie: Kenny

    Hi Lu Tze.

I did drop them a message but they have been off and are due back to work on Monday.
If you can PM me the details the TV was purchased under, just incase they need to arrange a call out to check the issue,.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,533 ✭✭✭Lu Tze

    Hi Kenny,

Did you here anything back from the support team?

  • Company Representative Posts: 4,953 ✭✭✭Richersounds.ie: DavidS

    Hi Lu Tze,

Kenny is off at the moment on a well deserved break - could you PM me your details and I can chase this up for you?

    Kind regards

    David

This is from over a decade ago, so may not be valid anymore, but is there any chance the AD (audio description) is turned on for just that channel?

according to that, Saorview carries (or at least carried) silence on the AD stream. LG has a dedicated AD button on the remote, so it's totally possible it was activated by mistake?

    Thanks for the suggestion deadduck!

    Kind regards

Just to not leave this as a stack overflow style dead end - the issue with losing sound on one specific channel hasn't recurred since the last factory reset and and re-setup (more than 6 months). The reset had been done multiple times previously but everything has worked fine this time since.

Thanks for all the support following up on the absolute mystery of an issue! The picture quality is excellent, even for judge Judy and the chase! I'm running a midrange Philips myself from 10 years ago which has obviously far outlasted your 6 year warranty - but will be back whenever (if ever) it packs it in!
