I know FIFA are a corrupt organisation - but one thing about them. And perhaps the most recent edition - or just now have more money than sense.

They do seem to be embracing change - I know people are going on about the hydration thing all the time - but look at all the other stuff - be it faster VAR - throw ins - fake injury - flow of play - play on. There is a better flow and higher intensity in the world cup (IMO) , look at this game end to end already in 5 mins.

I think people should look at entire package - and take the hydration break , if this is ball we get.

Nah the hydration "ad" breaks are just terrible. All the other stuff is good but shouldn't have to settle for this nonsense. It's a nice summers day in Vancouver at 19 degrees and no sun in the stadium and we're going to break the play for 3 minutes. It's just awful.

Brilliant, good early goal, and Larin doing the business again! Well worth his start.

Great bit of wing play to get into a dangerous position to cross it back, lovely first strike by David, and then Larin sweeping up the rebound. Hopefully can kick on from here.

If it helps maintain pace of game in the play period - I'm all for it.

If the games have higher intensity - no bullshit throw ins - fake injury - daft free.

How does a player actually rest.

Plenty of boos at the quarter-time ad break again. Will rightly be jettisoned after this tournament for sure. Which suits those who pushed for it grand anyway, Fox only wanted that bonus ad revenue for these few weeks.

It's not like they are going full tilt. Those other things are good but not exactly turning it into a non stop action fest. 3 minutes is ludicrous. 45 seconds more than enough if it has to happen. Imagine a hydration break in Burnley in the middle of December 😂

I like that the fans are starting to boo the breaks now in recent games. Good development.

Lucky to get it - but great strike.

CCracking strike, much deserved 2-0 leas. Qatar are muck and Swiss should kicking themselves

Nice oppertunistic finish from the blocked shot, another pure strike from David and this one goes in. Great to have both strikers off the mark now. That's a potentially very decent strike partnership.

And we still have Alphonso Davies and Bombito to come into this team, so there's more to come from them.

<edit> and a pen awarded in short order.

<edit 2> Changed to a free outside the box, and a red card for DOGSO.

Hopefully this world cup is the end of Qatar nonsense.

But - I do think the FIFA qualification rules for a country have gone a bit daft ?

Like of Cape Verde / Haiti - I wonder how many are native.

It is all gone a tad daft perhaps.

One of my in-laws lived in Switzerland for 6 months back in the 90s. He said the attitude there was you’re Swiss or you’re scum. I’ve never forgotten that!

If you're a citizen, you're eligible. That's all that matters, and all that should matter.

Jaysus - this is going to be a big score - happy to see Canada play so well. Well fit , high energy - didn't know much about Canada ?

Canadian jerseys are nice but at times you think the players have been painting, and got most of it on themselves.

Canada a good notch up on BH game.

But is that not a bit flawed - like the Qatar world cup and team are completely manufactured team. Paying players to become a citizen to make up a team. The end point was the entire Qatar project. That is clearly happening with other teams.

I've no issue with a natural citizen playing for a country - but don't agree with project teams in international football .

It's not quite a simple as that, as there is a clear connection component to FIFA's regs for players not born in the country. It's a measure to ensure FAs aren't out there trying to circumvent things by handing out passports and/or fast-tracked citizenships. Citizenships would generally qualify but not on it's own.

Have no idea how it applies to the teams being represented at this Finals, but probably safe to assume everything is in order.

Was there a thing that only the captain can talk to the ref ? this is actually getting a bit annoying all the players chase the ref - Man U stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,762 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

The Qatar one (and some of the other 'oil wealth family' countries) is a weird issue that I don't particularly think should be allowed - because they're not actually given real citizenship, they're being given special dispensation, but those players never gain the rights granted to real Qatari citizens. They have 'mission passports' rather than actual Qatari citizen passports. There's a clear delineation in their status.

But for the likes of Haiti and Cape Verde that you mentioned, those are all legit citizens, and even if they're a generation removed or whatever, have a legal right to represent their country.

Make up of Qatar's last world cup team - come on like.

Anyway - good riddance to the decade plus long experiment.

Those players are Meshaal Barsham (Sudan), Pedro Miguel (Portugal), Lucas Mendes (Brazil), Issa Laye (Senegal), Boualem Khoukhi (Algeria), Karim Boudiaf (France), Ahmed Fathy (Egypt), Assim Madibo (Sudan), Ahmed Alaaeldin (Egypt), Edmilson Junior (Belgium), Mohammed Muntari (Ghana), Yusuf Abdurisag (Somalia), Almoez Ali (Sudan), and Mohamed Manai (Tunisia).
