Yeah, poor enough response by Ireland, well beaten..

Played 17, lost 17 in T20 World Cups. Abysmal.

New Zealand punished for some awful catching and poor general fielding by the West Indies. Inexcusable some of them. Defending champs on the back foot to get out of the group now assuming England will top it.

Kane Williamson has just announced his retirement from international cricket wirh immediate effect

Unless he has some very serious personal reasons for doing this I have to be honest it comes off as really poor form to quit in the middle of a series that is still up for grabs for NZ , surely you help the team through the series and then retire.

India and Pakistan about as competitive as when the men play. No handshakes again and broadcaster used the same trick of having the scorecard on the screen instead.

Catching and fielding has been really poor so far. Even Australia had a few go down. I don't mind the different type of cricket the women play, slower bowling and loopy spinners and less sixes but bad fielding is a bit of a turnoff.

Uncapped Henry Crocombe of Sussex has been called into the squad to replace the injured Ollie Robinson... Robinson complaining of knee soreness... another boost for NZ ...

4 changes for England for the second test which will be at the Oval on Wednesday. Archer returns in place of Atkinson and Matt Fisher will play just his second test match as he replaces the injured Ollie Robinson.

Two debuts with Jordan Cox coming in at number 7 after he hit a double hundred at the weekend for Sussex and Sonny Baker is given an opportunity. He has taken 22 wickets this season in the First Division as England opt for a 4-man pace attack with Bashir left out. Bethell and Root will provide the spin option if needed.

Jamie Smith may also miss out as his partner is expecting their second child any moment and that would lead to a debut for James Rew which could mean 3 debuts which is chaotic to say the least.

Gay, Duckett, Bethell, Root (c), Smith (wk), Cox, Archer, Fisher, Tongue, Baker.

Baker will be praying it's third debut lucky after his nightmare odi and T20 debuts.

Cox could already be cemented in the team if he didn't get injured in New Zealand. He had a great few seasons leading up to that call up.

He was absolutely dreadful last year but has looked decent this year to be fair. England banking on his traits no doubt.

Jamie Smith will miss the second test after his second child was born today. James Rew will make his debut as his replacement and take over the gloves.

Gay, Duckett, Bethell, Root (c), Brook, J Rew (wk), Cox, Archer, Fisher, Tongue, Baker. Fair to say that's as random an England team as we've ever seen.

Henry Nicholls will slot in at number 3 in place of the retired Kane Williamson. Matt Henry has been declared fit after his back issues. New Zealand will only confirm their team at the toss in the morning.

The weather for the Oval is the complete opposite of the first test with clear blue skies for all 5 days. It should be a cracking pitch to win the toss on and bat, bat and bat some more.

Jamie Smith confirmed out now due to his kid being born. James Rew comes in on debut. Rew, looks like a handy batsman going by his stats, first class average just over 41. 12 first class centuries 17 half centuries and he’s only 22. 😦….. Prefer that then say going back to Buttler as a stopgap.

a much changed England, is that 5 changes with Rew coming in ? has to be a major shot in the arm for NZ….after that convincing defeat, basically switching half their team out.

difficult first 10 overs for NZ. Conway gone for 9 and only 19 runs on the board now after 10 overs. 🤔 NZ batsmen being very watchful as well they might need to be, looks like lots of late swing and some nip in this wicket.

New Zealand 166/4 at tea and for the first time in the day they look like they are comfortable with Blundell and Mitchell putting on 59 so far.

England have bowled well despite the inexperience. Could be a difficult session ahead though as legs tire.

Only caught the last hour or so. Archer and Phillips had a proper ding dong battle. Great stuff from both. Phillips will have a few nasty bruises but he's still in. Bethell bowled fine but gifted a few wickets.

291/7 at stumps. Probably about an even day. Remember reading the average first test innings at the Oval is 353 or around that…..NZ be hoping of making progress towards that total.. but if England can wrap up this tail early…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,174 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

dreadful start by England, conceding a plethora of boundaries, extras and now dropping catches. Load of really poor half trackers masquerading as bouncers…begging to be hit.

you can hear in Nasser’s voice on comms how bewildered and frustrated he is by what he’s watching… dumb bowing, both in execution and a tactical standpoint. Michael Atherton now joining in, he’s scathing about what he’s seeing from England…… “movement, carry and bounce, find a length !”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,174 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

74 runs were conceded by England in the first 12 overs of play today and this with the tail in batting for NZ jeeez…100 runs conceded to the tail in that first session.

Good reply by England, well until Bethell prods at one getting caught behind after Duckett is run out when it looked like a dive may have saved him…..Gay looks pretty good, unfussy organised and calm looking…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Duckett's short little legs were never making that run dive or no dive. It was a terrible call from Gay especially when they were flying along. It wasn't like the scoreboard was stuck and something had to give.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,647 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Especially as they both got a warning pre-lunch as well so it was really daft.

England have looked decent at the crease despite losing those 2 wickets. All just trying to make up for the damage from this morning however where they just went for short ball after short ball.

Bethell played at one he shouldn't have. I still don't think he is an international number 3 despite some of the success he has had.

Game still pretty much in the balance. A lot of work for England to do but the pitch isn't too bad at all. Much more cloudier than was anticipated at the start of the week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,174 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Gay after doing so well gets out to a shocker of a shot, neither played or left just hung hands and bat awkwardly out beside him. Yeah seeing the replay again Duckett was done for anyway just a poor call to run…

Don’t know why they don’t play Bethell down the order.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,647 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Henry bowling stump to stump with the keeper up does it for New Zealand. Just like Neser giving England trouble with a basic bowling plan during the Ashes, Brook and Root didn't have the answers to it.

Rew then trying to take on a bouncer when the close of play was only 10 minutes away wasn't too wise and undoubtedly New Zealand are now in full control of the test match.

Will take a miracle for England to get out of this hole. Far too many changes and upheaval, it's not really a surprise. New Zealand are too good to not capitalise.

One all going to Trent Bridge, what will England even look like. Stokes and Atkinson straight back in surely. Robinson too if fit. Cox I like but with Archer the best of what's left, it might have to be the second innings for him to make his mark.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,174 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Rew not having a great game, dropping catches and untidy keeping all round, messed up a couple of takes now shelling catches…3 in this test so far I think now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,213 ✭✭✭MFPM

Haven't had the opportunity to catch much of this match but NZ slowly turning the screw here on England...lead nearing 200...8 wickets in hand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭Gillespy

England's goose looks cooked. Hot day, they're leaking boundaries too regularly now. 230 lead now, 380 was almost chased last year at the Oval so New Zealand can't relax yet.

Great start here with the ball by Ireland against New Zealand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭Gillespy

141 is still a formidable target given everything. Need a good powerplay to have any hope.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,213 ✭✭✭MFPM

Ireland going OK. 33/1 off 6. 106 off 14 to win...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Thank God for DRS. Clear as day going way down.

Better last over bringing nine runs. Need a few more like that to make the required rate more comfortable.

New Zealand women have been abysmal this World Cup. As defending champs they've been a real let down.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Single after a six, Sunny Gaviscar will be saying that's good cricket.
