Lashing rain in Toronto and about 18 degrees and we're going to have hydration breaks. What a farce.

On the plus side no one will die of dehydration this World Cup.

Tommy Coyne would have killed for a hydration break in Giants Stadium in 1994. The whole team would have killed their granny for one in Orlando.

Amazed in went to Barcelona, I watched him closely during times of fantasy football, and there were loads of times he barely got on the ball at all for Newcastle, anonymous like today. Then he went on a run of getting a load of handy penalties later in the season.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

This is shameful stuff for FIFA in the pissing rain. If only they were capable of shame.

Ghana win it at the death.

What was the panama lad thinking diving in out on the left wing in the lead up to that

Heartbreak for Panama - almost managed to hold out, but undone in the final moments. Excellent goal from Ghana in fairness though.

The Panamanian fans were utterly distraught for those last few minutes.

The 3rd goal for Columbia is one of the best assists you'll see in this tournmanet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,894 ✭✭✭Jaffa3000

This is Englands best chance as they have a manager now unlike the previous 3.

Although squad wise I’d probably agree with you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,521 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

England won because they are far superior athletes. I didn’t see anything with their football to worry the nations who are athletically level with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,737 ✭✭✭GiftofGab

It's only 1 game. They can still build momentum.

The rankings for central and north American teams are a joke.

    Mexico 14

    USA 17

    Canada 30

    Panama 34

I thought the calibre of opposition was taken into account and competitive games etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,521 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

All the teams winning are building momentum.

the narrative seems to be that England were weak defensively yesterday. Can’t say I saw that. I thought Croatia just scored two brilliant goals.

It’ll be on Kane to be the creator and the goal scorer. A big burden but hes probably the best or close to the best player I’ve seen play for England so he may be up to it. The other forward players can run for days and good runs make great passes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,894 ✭✭✭Jaffa3000

That’s just laughable, there isn’t a single team in this tournament who want to play against Kane, Bellingham, Saka and Rashford.

Every single tournament for the last 40 years is the same aul shìte....England being overhyped or shat on by their media and fans....

Then you have Paddy Irishman buying into it all....

This tournament will be no different....its straightforward enough for them until last 16/quarter final territory - then some inevitable calamity will occur and that will be that....

    Kane definitely. Bellingham, getting there.

I don’t think id rate Saka & Rashford the same. Maybe they can get to that level during this tournament but they are impact subs for now. Against a tired Croatia backline it was clear theyd make hay.

No it's not the same. They hadn't made 2 Euros finals (one of which they were far superior except for their sht coach) back in the day when most of us started watching.

Those over hyped teams used to scrape through qualifying like they were Ireland. This team is hyped not overhyped.

Also total bollix to say the Irish buy into it. We are usually falling around laughing at them and their wild expectations.

Never understood this line of thought. I recall Ireland fans several months ago loudly proclaiming they were qualifying for the World Cup (and the media fully bought into that too). Arrogance or excitement?

The trouble is eventually England will win a 50/50 (against the likes of Portugal or Argentina which they lost almost every game to on pens in the 90s/2000s).

Those over hyped teams used to scrape through qualifying

Sorry what? England scraping through qualifying? When did that ever happen?

Here are their qualifying groups from 2010 to 2024… not seeing much scraping there!!

The closest anyone brought them was Ukraine in 2014, and the last time they didn't qualify was for Euro 2008, but since then they won every group, easily…

After staying up to watch that awful game, I was hoping it would stay goalless. Better chance they both get knocked out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,697 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

I happened to see the England team that lost in the 2018 world cup semi final.

Maguire, Henderson, Trippier, Jesse Lingard, Dele Ali, Ashley Young, Rose, Dier, Vardy, all featured. The likes of Fabien Delph, Phil Jones, Loftus Cheek and Butland on the bench.

That was a world cup semi final, but the step up from Henderson, Ali and Lingard to Rice, Saka and Bellingham is very real.

They still can't hold a ball in midfield but this is still a very good England team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,877 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Sorry I described it all wrong. They looked uninspiring and the team seemed to worry about these teams they should be putting away easily. Teams that other top nations would look far more confident against.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,041 ✭✭✭McFly85

England were excellent for the first 20 minute of the second half but look far from the finished article.

Their absolute reliance on physicality will get them so far, but there are teams that can match them in that respect and have shown a bit more nous. Aside from the obvious like France, I could see teams like Morocco and Senegal causing them all sorts of problems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,894 ✭✭✭Jaffa3000

They’ve won every game in qualifying numerous times (under Tuchel they won every game and didn’t concede any goals). What on earth are you on about. Pretty sure they scored the most goals in Euro 2020 qualifying too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,877 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Why are you bringing up 2020 or under Tuchel. I clearly said they were a very good team then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,558 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

One of the most annoying things in International football is the ridiculously easy groups England always get in major tournament qualifiers…

In the groups above that I posted, the only teams of note they faced were Croatia & Italy… and they finished 7 points ahead of Croatia and 6 points ahead of Italy…

They could probably pick a side from teh Championship and still walk to every tournament blindfolded…

That has happened ever since they didnt qualify for USA '94.....which was viewed as a disaster for FIFA...

England have had cushy groups ever since....
