A lot to like about that England side. Great energy. Direct football. Good to watch

It boys getting excited, even Roy. It's gonna be lovely when they get knocked out

Seriously, they were good in the second half, but that defence will cost them

I have, let's just say, a special ability to tune into TV stations around the globe.

It really puts into perspective how great the World Cup is and how much it brings the world together, over the past few days I've flicked through over 40 different stations around the world all showing even the most minor of games in dozens of languages.

Ironically we complain about RTE/BBC/ITV but it looks like most other countries are way more ads compared to analysis.

The world cup is over now, It's coming home

Pure utter shite by those supporters

So with almost every team having played their opening game are people still saying that this is a bloated mess that they are not interested in or are they enjoying the entertaining games every night?

    Definitely the latter for me.

Good comparison here Henry on Ronaldo not making runs to make space for his team mates, being selfish

Versus the goal Bellingham scored which was made by Madueke's unselfish run. Which Kevin Doyle pointed out on RTE.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Is there any argument to be made that RTÉ should only do live coverage of the World Cup if Ireland qualify? Leave Irish fans who really want to watch it to their own means of obtaining the games?

    This too shall pass.

Cant imagine that would be a runner. I think the TV rights are sorted before qualification is finished. RTE would have had to pay a tidy sum for them and couldnt afford to not show it. And I doubt FIFA would allow them to sell on. The broadcasting forum regulars would have better idea of ins and outs.

To our own means? What are we supposed to do - call up FIFA and negotiate individually?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,225 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Buy a Sky box and tune in BBC and ITV, find a multichannel internet streaming box, all the usual cheap and cheerful ways to watch your favourite sports without lining the pockets of the undeserving 😈

    This too shall pass.

Nothing much to get excited about there but at least we are finally getting around to the 2nd round of the groups.

If anyone can't find a channel for the world cup then they mist be living in a cave 😂.

I've never seen so many streams when flicking on a match in the evening.

I've been watching world cups on RTE since 1978, I can't find any reason to watch them on any other channel if they are available on RTE.

Yes, and an unselfish celebration by Bellingham - oops, sorry, the opposite!

I quite like sitting down to game in the dead of night, tho 12pm would be the latest for me…couldn't watch a game from 2 am or later

Tho overall i think it's lost a lot of it's magic, watching teams from South America for example and seeing players you know from clubs like Brentford, Palace or Sunderland has watered down the mystique to say the least

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,941 ✭✭✭ronjo

Thats kindof the biggest issue for me. Nostalgic thing I am sure but something feels off when Brazils centre forward plays for Brentford and the 3 midfielders are players seen week in week out.

I've enjoyed the World Cup so far. It has been a step up from 4 years ago.

The extra games are great but the time is a bit rough.
5pm, 8pm and 11pm are great times for games when it falls.

Also interesting that a lot of the big name players got off to good starts this round. Golden boot could be very interesting

Hopefully it goes up another level once the knockouts come around.
But overall it's the most I've enjoyed a world cup in a long time

I see some people saying this has been great so far and I can't help but think they aren't really being objective.

Its a week in and only one game played each, with most of those games between teams nobody gives a flying **** about.

No group of death worth talking about, no jeopardy because any good team will walk into the knockouts, the big shock is a small team getting a draw against a Spain side that will still ease through the group. The big strikers are getting goals because why wouldn't they when the quality is so diluted.

There is a novelty because its a world cup, but I imagine that will wear a bit thin over the next ten days of games at odd hours between teams that already know who is getting to the knockouts and who isn't.

Its still another 10 days until the first meaningful game. It'll be background noise for most of the week.

I hardly watch the premiere league or anything other than maybe the semi finals on of a European club competition.

But I rearly miss a world cup or Euros

So for the likes of myself I have no objective take on all of this,I just like watching sports late into the night.

I was watching the DRC v Portugal game yesterday and sure enough the DRC scorer, someone you would expect came from some obscure club in deepest Africa or Eastern Europe, actually plays with Newcastle Utd

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,925 ✭✭✭sonofenoch

Wissa who they signed from Brentford 😄

All the familiarity does take the shine off it a bit in my opinion, that's not a problem if your an avid PL or indeed football junkie As someone else said about nostalgia, remember Senegal bursting on the scene with a bunch of players nobody heard of in 2002 or Germany emerging in 2010 with new style and young players like Ozil…none of that seems to happen anymore

In saying that have tried to get into watching Brazilian league games in the past, it's not a great watch either suppose all their talent heads to Europe at a very young age

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,920 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

I coined the term for whas happening in soccer and many elite sports the Nerflixisation of the sport.

In this case, FIFA (same as UEFA, the GAA to a certain extent, European Rugby, and the big US sports) favour quantity over quality. They favour constant low intensity content, they can be followed by half watching, like a lot of the slop on Netflix that most folks half watch while they scroll on their phones.

Historically, these big tournaments were a novelty, as above you watched all the available games with interest and discovered new players, new teams, and were more invested. Now it's mainly just background noise, but once it's on in the background and you observe the adverts that's ok with FIFA.

Is it better or worse? It's different that's for sure, but there is no way any sane person could consume all the games fully, you have to pick and chose. We have to be careful though,we have a very Euro-centric and even Anglo-centric view, almost what right have the African or Asian teams have to share the spotlight or get their slice of the pie. We all know FIFA and Gianna only being them along to butress his own powerbase, but they have as much right to stink the place out as the likes of this Czech team has

Nothing to do with any of that, more games equals more revenue

European teams are the best by a mile and hence there should be more there. Ireland are levels above some of the slop at this World Cup
