drove to airport Monday morning , car was 100% when I left home . 219km completed using 50.044KWh 3hrs 04 mins. showing ~28% remaining 75KWh battery usable . air con on 22° . . giving 328 km for full tank

my car - 64kWh Kona - has recently been indicating ~500km range - going on the claimed 252km range with 50% battery left.

that has been during perfect weather with no need for heating or AC.

84KWh Ioniq 6. Did a Mayo to Dublin run yesterday, 223km, 14.26kWh/100km, 60% left on arrival which is approx 560km range at 100%.

Thats an awful lot better than last Jan when i was arriving with 52%, so a range of 470km at 100% in the winter for the same run.

Yes, I’m very close to matching my WLTP figure of 416kms (66Kwh) now that the temps have increased and the sun is out.

Even motorway driving speeds is giving me a decent increase in range

I deliberately did a sedate 95.6 km (stated by the car) run a couple of nights ago on a Tesla Model Y LR AWD driven at GPS speeds with most of the run at 80 km/h road.

The net battery capacity of this battery is ~79 kWh, and the car used 11.7 kWh to do the run. The official range is 629 km but this would have resulted in maximum range of 645 km at 122.2 Wh/km.

Temperature was 19-24C and the A/C was at auto 21.

Well, I can now confirm that the battery range on my 2020 64KWh Kia Soul EV is 409kms from 100% down to 5% (I likely had about 20kms remaining then).

This was quite recent and the outside temps had not got to the heady heights they are now. I think it was around 12 to 14c at the time and consisted of a mix of urban and motorway driving over the course of 2 weeks. It was also the first time I experienced the dreaded "Turtle" mode but it was only for about 1km before I got to a charger. Overall, this range was quite close to the quoted 450kms from KIA when the car was new, so I consider that to be decent.

That will likely be the first and last time I bring the car to that low SOC, as I normally charge up when I get to 20%. New ioniq 6 is on order for the July plate change and I am looking forward to a bit more range.

As others have said though, the Soul has had enough range for me in my daily life so I never really worried about it. The car itself is really underrated and I can't understand why it didn't sell more. I get that the looks can be a little divisive, however for some reason, other similar looking cars such as the Skoda Yeti and Mini Aceman seem to occupy a different place in people's minds. Maybe I just prefer to be quirky but when I had a chat with a salesperson in a main dealers recently about a trade in, they told me I "bought the wrong car". I walked away and went somewhere that was happy to do a deal… a Hyundai dealership is getting my money now.😊

Most recently, I've only had to do a number of short-range trips on rural roads where the speed limit is 60mph - return trips of 8 miles here, 6 miles there, 20 miles elsewhere. A lot of the time I've been driving at more like 50-55mph, with a fair few stop-starts and 30mph through villages etc, and the consumption has been reading 4.4 miles per kWh, which converts to just over 14kWh/100km (the other day it was up to 4.9miles/kWh, or 12.7kWh/100km!). That 4.4 would give me a theoretical range of 280 miles, or 448km, but I wouldn't drive that slowly on the motorway so I don't ever expect to see that. 😉

    (Also a Kia, this one's an e-Niro).

Yeah, I thought so too. Overall average consumption since I bought it in 2022 is 16.4KWh/100km over 50,000kms of driving, so that works out to a rough range of 390kms from 100% to 0%. Obviously I can beat that figure but I have a lot of back and forth to Galway from Dublin so that has driven the average consumption higher over time.

Must say I liked the Kia Soul from that era - it was querky and different to the more bland EVs available at the time

just saw this - 328km from 75kWh is very poor?

    that's about 23kWh per 100km.

People ask me the same I don't really know either. I never really go from 100% to very low %.

Only time I've come close to that has been long journey but I've stopped early like 16-20% because it was a more convenient stop. Also fully loaded and freezing and high speed.

I generally charge when it's convenient, car sitting idle for a few hours, I don't wait for it to be empty. I also rarely charge to 100% because it often sits unused for a couple of days or more.

I think range questions are best answered by people who do the same kind of driving as the person asking the question. Probably people who do long distance on a regular basis.

That said most people who ask me do a long trip once or twice a year. It's become "the question" even if they don't do long journeys.

To calculate your total range you just need to use 50% and multiply by 2. You don't actually have to drive all the way from 100% to 0%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,592 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

Sure I can estimate it. But that's not the same as actually doing it. I can also see what others have got on the Internet. But that differs widely.

I actually enjoy hammering the battery driving like I stole it.

Your energy consumption does not change depending on the battery state of charge, therefore it is most definitely the same

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,592 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

    Did I suggest that?

I think if you drive flat out for half the battery and just local trips at low speed the other half consumption and thus range will definitely not be the same.

Anyway I don't watch it all all.

Much improved range now with summer finally here- even last week, range was “ok” but not what it should be this time of year.

What are people’s experience of driving country roads? Like up hills down dales all day long? Twisty roads etc- does it kill range ?

I find that seems to be fine in my car, I think it extends range; in that it will often lower speed to a more fuel efficient one.

Yeah, in recent weeks we've been doing a lot of that sort of 55-60mph driving on minor and regional roads while at the same time it's been getting warmer, and my car's GOM has been getting increasingly optimistic as a result. These days it's estimating ranges from full of about 275-280 miles (440+km), when I would normally only expect a maximum of somewhere between 250-260 in ideal conditions.

Still seems reasonably accurate too, going by a longer trip in recent days. GOM when setting off indicated a range of 275 miles at 99% SOC - we were in no major hurry for the outward leg on Sunday, so had the cruise set at 68mph for most of it. By the time we'd arrived after covering 197 miles (315km), it still estimated 73 miles/116km remaining, with consumption for that journey of 4.2 miles/kWh. So even cruising at that slightly higher speed (108kmh), it still could have covered about 430km before dying. Temp when setting off was 21C and was still 15C by 7.30pm.

The other day I charged up to 100% and the range estimate when we set off was 548km. That was before I switched on A/C - but we got down to 30% charge having done I think 370km so am very happy with that.

    64kWh Kona.

here's an interesting one; we drove from near kilcock to near coolquoy earlier, on winding roads and some more open road driving, and even with the A/C on for a while, got a really low consumption figure. several minutes of the 38 mins stated was moving extremely slowly so the trip was closer to 60km/h average when driving.

Not getting anything like your consumption but again today 20+ degrees, was getting 12-13 KWh - which is v good for me- now that I’ve had the car for over 5 months and because it’s summer time, I’m starting to ease off the accelerator just to explore what the car can do in terms of range- definitely the heat helps but when I started today to ease off the accelerator and just drive a bit closer to Miss Daisy- the numbers fell down - there’s time for speed and there’s time for just relaxed driving - I’m going relaxed driving now - let’s see if I can get close to your figures over coming weeks - a nice challenge for me 😀
