Yeh, true enough. Dalot too has played LB but it's not a big ask to sign a dedicated LB.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,102 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

He could be an option if you need someone to fill in but the club need someone long term at LB and then there's also the fact that he could be needed at RB.

No player is worth a £100M but unfortunately that's the way things have gone but why would he be decent for Spurs and not for United?

Why would we overplay our hand by getting involved in a bidding war for Tonali? Let spurs do the leg work, agree a fee that Newcastle will accept then if we are interested then match the offer. Anyone think hed pick spurs over us?

We've been complaining for years about us getting involved in driving up prices for players. Last summer it was the same with Big Ben and Newcastle.

if spurs do a deal for 60m should be put in a bid?

    where is 100m coming from?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,893 ✭✭✭El Gato De Negocios

If the management team think he is a player that fits what's needed then absolutely. If only one team is bidding then invariably the accepted price is lower than quoted. As for £100m, thats the usual club posturing.

AWB and tuanzebe starting for congo this evening

No chance does Tonali go for £60M. Spurs are spending £52M on Van Hecke whose got a year left on his contract and wanted out. Deals like that affect other deals you want to get done and then add in the prices other clubs are quoting for their CMs.

Anyone else not keen on Tonali after the betting thing?

    Much rather Fernandes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 890 ✭✭✭blackwave

Yup and the price quoted is very high - £100m. I see City and Arsenal are linked now as well so will be interesting to see where he ends up!

City looking at Tonali as well as Anderson, this thread will be fun after they drop 230m on 2 players 😅

Bruno + Ronaldo terrible. Wan Bissaka + Tuanzabe heroic. Great result for DR Congo.

Spurs might offer a fee that Newcastle would be prepared to accept in the absence of other higher offers being on the table but as soon as United match Spurs offer, Newcastle will go back to Spurs (and whoever is still in the mix) and invite them to make an improved offer, hence driving up the price.

Your theory only works if Spurs don't increase their offer and United is the players preference which isn't guaranteed given Gareth Bale and Paul Gascoigne both famously turned down opportunities to join United in the past in favour of Spurs and that was with Sir Alex, not Michael Carrick in charge!!

when did 100m become a thing?

    JUST IN - Fabrizio Romano:

    "
Mateus Fernandes is VERY KEEN on a move to Man Utd.

"Ideally, West Ham wanted around £100m, but the expectation is they can close the deal for around £85m.

"Man Utd want to sign the player, and contacts will continue in the next hours and days." [

85m is absolutely crazy. It should be closer to 50m. We can give them 60m and 85m if he wins us a premier or CL, or scores 40 goals in his first season.

Such a shame that Barca decided to spunk 80m on an English winger who likes running into people. Rashford can do that equally as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,435 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

I can't see any official quote from Romano saying £100m. I think that's some fake news bullshlttery.

This was from Romano on the 8th and I can't see anything reliable saying otherwise.

I suspect it'll be done and dusted around the £65-70m mark with some add ons. If as reported, Fernandes has made his desire clear, then it's just a matter of time.

Crazy how Barcelona paid £70m for Gordon but don’t want to pay £35m for Rashford

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 687 ✭✭✭kyleman

On his morning round up he said West Ham wanted €100 mil but would settle for something nearer to €85 million.

English manager and Barcelona manager preferring Gordon over rashford says enough tbh, rash won't press

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,435 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

Yeah Barcelona could have had him for as little as €30m, he is apparently available to most English clubs for an asking price of £40m (and they could most likely negotiate 25% less due to the circumstances) and yet there's sod all substantial interest thus far is very telling.

Bags of talent but his poor attitude and application will see what should have been a fantastic career drift off into obscurity.

I fully expect him to linger through until the last day of the window before skulking off on loan somewhere with us covering a chunk of his wages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,838 ✭✭✭scottser

Again, post-match, Rashford thanks the world and its dog, everyone except United.

He's not coming back. Someone will give us 30-35m and he'll agree to 150 per week, which is about his level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,834 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

Why buy the cow when you got the milk for free comes to mind.

Fans don't get excited about paying big money for a player that is already at the club.

I can see Barcelona's point of view but also this is why we shouldn't loan out established players without the obligation to buy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,087 ✭✭✭✭Macy0161

Don't get the obsession around wanting United thanked tbh. No doubt he f*cked up, but United hardly gave him a stable environment to thrive either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭NITRO95

I don't think its an obsession. Its more pointing out Rashfords state of mind re United. He obviously feels everyone except Utd has helped get him where he is. He'll never be welcomed back to the club as a legend and that's something he's gonna have to live with. Although we've already seen on this very thread people talking up Anthony Martial like he wasn't a lazy waste of space he gave very little in return for the massive money he was paid. But online is very different to the reaction of the crowd at OT, and the OT crowd weren't exactly fully behind Rashford before he left.

Rashford could easily win back the United crowd. People love a 'redemption' story.

But the practical reality is that the first time he doesn't track back or if not tracking or working is again something people can easily criticise him for, it becomes an even more toxic problem. He would need to be the near perfect player. IMO he could do it - there is nothing stopping him from putting in more effort to defend and to press, even if he is not good at those elements. But history would suggest its just not something we would be likely to see.

And it is a shame, because potentially he could solve a squad problem we have in terms of being an option at both LW and ST.
