Smart move by Lille. The bigger the shop window the more interest there'll be = the higher price they can extract.

In fairness, posters have gone out of their way to qualify what problem Nunez would solve and under what circumstances.

The Nunez rumours are very odd. You honestly can't fault his work rate but his final product as a striker is just not good enough. Even on a free and just wages, it seems a waste of resources. I like him but I seem to remember shouting at my TV a lot when he was playing and not in a good way.

After the big splash last season, I have a feeling that this year will be lean. And given it's a world cup year, the players you pick due to a world cup performance rarely outshine that performance in a season.

The journalists that have been "close" to the club clearly haven't a notion as we have seen with Slot's departure so I would take any rumours with a massive pinch of salt.

The ones that struggled for us, Isak, Wirtz are doing well in the WC albeit against lower quality than PL so far. Just wonder how they will do with a high intensity Iraola game. The question is can Iraola get a tune out of what's already there.

What I couid see happening is Isak picking up an injury and Nunez being our main striker. That wouid be a disaster imo.

If Klopp couldn't get him playing to his full potential I doubt he'll suddenly turn it around.

He shouldn't be near a team challenging for the big trophies imo.

I was interested in how he was going to play last night. He made 3 passes in his 45 mins of play.

I seriously doubt the club will go after him.

To be fair last night was his first competitive game in months. He's going to be rusty. Uruguay were also atrocious for the first hour (even after Darwin went off) - you can't make a pass if you're not getting the ball.

Nunez on a free would be a no brainer in my opinion. I always liked him and always felt he was unfairly treated by fans, he may not have reached the levels expected due to the fee but he had 66 goal contributions in 140 games and some very important ones in there too. He also added a lot in general play in work rate, pressing etc and was very good at defending corners a thing I rarely see mentioned. His goal/assists is better than most still it’s the fee which impacts perception.

Sign nunez, his workrate and effort might rub off on isak

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,727 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Yeah, like, with his workrate, if you get him on a free then the performance level he's already provided would be more than enough. The issues came with the expectations around his huge price tag, but on a free and able to cover across all three attacking positions, he's well worth a punt. Great fit for how Iraola plays too.

We need at least three forward signings and we know they wont all be 100m players

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,407 ✭✭✭✭8-10

It's probably a silly question but would we have to pay Benfica the add on if he plays another couple of games for us?

That was why Slot didn't play him at the end of the season last year because we'd have had to play €5m to Benfica if he played 100 league games for us or something and he was a few short of that

But would the wording of the add on possibly mean it's still a live clause? We were super reluctant to pay it before so we wouldn't want to now

Like if the clause is "give us €5m if he plays 100 league games for you", does it matter that he went to Saudi? He's still going to have played that amount of league games total if he comes back

Or does the clause somehow reset or become void because we sold him?

Good question and probably comes down to how the original transfer was worded so that the clubs are covered legally.

I would assume that the terms are something like 'conditions for the transfer of Nunez from Benfica to Liverpool' and the add-ons are included there. Technically he wouldn't be joining from Benfica, he would be joining from Saudi/free agent, if he were to join so those Benfica to Liverpool conditions wouldn't be being met.

Much as we love Darwin, we can't be wasting any overseas slots on him. We'll need to keep room for Mbappe!

    And Barcola

Yeah but most people on here don't bother wasting their time with actually reading posts correctly or taking any context into account before they spurt out their own thoughts!

Is there another "Tommysocks" on this thread or are you the same guy that was constantly bemoaning how terrible Nunez was for us and how he wasn't good enough to wear the shirt while he actually played for us?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 432 ✭✭Tommysocks11

Thats me but not always moaning about him, I admired his effort and honestly and on a free would be good business, nunez wasn't half the flop that isak is currently looking like to be honest

What Arsenal showed last year is that you need a strong squad of over 20 senior players, not 16 senior players with 14 only ever being used and then the rest topped up with youth players.

I can't find analysis on the big chances missed and what impact they had on the result of those games but he also turned up and scored or assisted in games that had direct impacts, his debut in the Community Shield, won the penalty to make it 2-1 and scored to make it 3-1. His PL debut scored an equaliser to make it 1-1 and then assisted Salah to make it 2-2. The 2-1 win away to Newcastle when down to 10 men, the 1-0 against Forest in the 99th minute, the 2 goals against Brentford to win the game which for me put us in the driving seat to win the league. Coming off the bench away to PSG and being a handful for their defence and giving the assist for Harvey.

His work rate in defending from the front and getting back to support the defence was sorely missed last season. He celebrated a defensive tackle as much as he celebrated a goal and that energy was non-existent.

For those saying he hasn't done much this year in Saudi. He has 1667 minutes total time which is equivalent to 18.5 90 minute games. He has 9 goals and 5 assists so still a goal every 2 games.

For Liverpool over the 3 seasons he had 40 goals and 26 assists in 7430 minutes which is equivalent to 82.5 90 minute games. Again a goal nearly every 2 games and an assist in every 3 games.

Add to that hitting the woodwork 14 times which some can argue is him missing big chances but also it shows that he got himself in those positions.

4 of the 14 were in a single game against Chelsea with hitting the post and cross bar with left foot, right foot, header and a penalty! He still kept going though and got the assist for the fourth goal in the 4-1 win.

With the price tags on Isak and Wirtz, Nunez would no longer be getting judged in the media as the big money striker.

Taking him back on a free is worth the risk.

On balance, I think it's worth bringing him back as squad cover considering Ekitike will be injured most of next year so buying a new LW/ST isn't really a practical move.

Assuming Iraola uses 4-2-3-1 then the attack is probably

    Isak

    Gakpo Wirtz Elliot/new RW?

and then Rio as backup, so adding Darwin would allow cover at LW/ST without eating into transfer funds.

He's the most heart vs head player I've ever seen at Liverpool - on one level I love his energy and personality but on another level his ability to waste chances is something else.

Separately, I just copped Dumfries appears to be on his way to Real - where does that leave Trent?

As things stand, Liverpool need someone to sub on for Isak on the 70th minute on the opening game of the season, or possibly even start as the CF. And the same again the next game, and the next game. They will also need to start PL & CL games within the first few weeks. As things stand, Gakpo will be starting as LW so he is not an option there. He will also need a replacement.

Wingers are priorities, but a CF is also needed. At least 3 forwards are needed to be signed this summer IMO. And that's before the future of Gakpo is looked at.

I think if they could do a deal with Darwin of 1 year with an option of a 2nd if he hits certain targets, that would be amazing, covers us for Ekitike and if he regains form then allows us to retain him and maybe sell him on then. Unless Iraola has someone else in mind for 20-30million I think we should consider it. Going to be an interesting transfer summer again..maybe as right back cover we should go in for Trippier, now that he wants out of his other contract, against FSG model I know…but I'd also like us to look at John Stones as CB cover

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,009 ✭✭✭Dr Robert

The FSG model isn't as rigid as it once was.

Eg, big contacts for older players, massive transfer fees for players

    Diomede

    Jarod Bowen

    Someone else

    Nunez on loan

    Ali / Mamar

Bradley / Frimpong / someone else

    Gomez / Jacquet

    Virg / Leoni

    Kerkez / Tsimi

    Grav / Jones / Endo

    Szobo / Alexis / Nyoni / Bajcetic

    Diomande / Bowen / Chiesa

    Wirtz / Elliot

    Gakpo / Rio

    Isak / Ekitike / Nunez

Assumed Diomande rather than our old boy Bernard Diomede, plus the someone else as pointed out above might need to be a RB or at very least a utility back who can play there a la Timber to a very high level. I wouldn't love the makeup of that squad, but maybe it could work, it probably has enough bodies but of course Bradley and Ekitike come in injured. Then Ali, Frimpong, Gomez, Chiesa, and Isak have a dodgy recent injury record so could see us coming unstuck before long.

That's where I am on Nunez. I wasn't his biggest fan when he was here but if we get him on a free I think we'd be stupid to turn down that down provided the weekly wage wasn't crazy. He's got a big heart and will work his socks off. We missed him and Diaz a lot last season as they create space for others. We're gonna need a much stronger squad to cope with fatigue/injuries due to the pressing game so someone like Nunez makes sense. He speaks Spanish too so that might be another few percent that will help him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,407 ✭✭✭✭8-10

Yeah the Spanish thing is underrated - he clearly leant on Thiago and MacAllister to translate instructions, there's that funny video of Thiago doing it in front of Klopp

Having a manager who speaks Spanish removes a massive hurdle that he had before. Add in the fact that his national team manager was Iraola's mentor and directly influenced his managerial style. Iraola was Bielsa's captain at Bilbao.

It makes so much sense that it definitely won't happen

    When is Bradley due back?

About 3 weeks before he gets injured again.

Bradley has the potential to lock down the RB spot for the next 8/9 years but he also has the potential to finish out his contract without playing 10 games in a row.

I'd love to see a proven 29/30 yo RB come in and gradually let Bradley come back and get up to speed. He seems to have everything in his locker except a bit of luck.
