He's a good player, when fit. A little hard to see the need for him alright but if you think that Prendergast could be gone a lot with Ireland this year we might need a senior player.

Also Josh Murphy must have played 500 minutes in the back row last year and probably wont this year.

Lancaster mentioned "emotional scarring" within the squad in a recent interview with The42. The Connors deal was likely done last November/December, my theory is that he was concerned about the mentality within the squad at the time, and looked to Connors as a trusted lieutenant type. The sort of guy that will drive standards in training, in review sessions, etc. By all accounts he's a great guy to have around the camp.

Connors is one of the very most popular individuals within the Leinster squad, I think he'll be a huge addition in this respect.

He's also a really smart guy (doing a PhD in Safe Tackle Biomechanics) and someone with extensive experience under Lancaster. I think it's understated how much of an addition Connors & Frawley will be to the mentality and the dressing room in Connacht, never mind on the pitch.

That's my read too. If we can get 6/700 minutes out of him that will be a bonus.

Initially I thought he might do a bit of work as a de facto contact skills coach following Tucker's departure, but Lancaster mentioned in an interview that Woodman would be taking over that element of the role. Mind you, he also said recently that Muldoon works on tackle tech, so it seems like the breakdown of duties is somewhat fluid.

is there a reason behind all provincial teams being reduced in squad for next season. is it a budget thing. How does it affect amount of academy players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

I think it's partly a delayed reaction to the reduction in regular season games and partly a cost cutting exercise.

As far as I know the IRFU fund the same amount of academy contracts (20) as previous.

Maybe my wording (due to poor English) was wrong or inappropriate. So I must apologize it. I wanted to say that there is no senior lock come into Connacht. About Connors, I remember Adam Byrne who could not fit artificial turf. I cannot judge that Connors ( who had the long injury history) can fit to A.T. And even if he can fit, and I think he will not be better than Prendergast, Boyle, Jansen and SHL.

Was just looking at the academy yesterday. That was 14 players. Does this mean we have 6 slots available that have not been filled by the academy management and if that is the case then why is it the case?

It's obviously left open for the forthcoming intake, likely announced after the U20 RWC.

Bohan, Illo, Prendergast, Murray, Jansen, and Aki are all included in the summer touring squad. Surprised to see no Bealham in the squad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,054 ✭✭✭Zeugnis

As regards Bealham, I think the selection is about exploring depth. The question about the hierarchy has been posed in Connacht this season, it's fair that Farrell wants to have a look at Illo. My view is that Sam still has more to learn in the scrum but superiority in the loose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,806 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

If only we could see hierarchy questioned across all provincial teams. But shock horror we have central contracts. That kills that idea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 864 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

I think Finlay might fall into the Lowe category. No contract renewal announcement and not selected here by AF.

Hope that he had a contract with an option and its been sorted without an announcement. Plenty left in the tank for Connacht imo.

Anyway, fair play to all the lads selected.

Bealham wasn't in our list of departures so absolutely isn't in Lowe territory, will be here next year.

The chances of Furlong being fit for 4 games in a row are sadly near zero, so he may yet go on tour too.

Mmm. I was gobsmacked at what Furlong was able to produce last summer. If it was another B&I L tour I'd say he'd be fit for 4-in-a-row! There might be life left in him yet.

Delighted to see Illo getting selected. Fully deserved and reflective of the huge leap in his scrummaging and fitness this season. He's also puts in a load of tackles and is a consistent turnover threat.

It's no bad thing either for Finlay to have the summer off. 2 Good selections from a Connacht point of view.

Bealham has been a brilliant stalwart for Connacht. Gritted it out for the last 12 seasons, on both sides of the scrum, if and when he was asked.

Im also gobsmacked at what Bohan has been producing. He's 20!! (8 starts this season)

Anyone know who was the youngest prop to make his debut for Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,000 ✭✭✭b.gud

    From OptaJonny on Twitter

1.5 - Billy Bohan ranks 1st for dominant tackles (1.5) and 2nd for tackles made (15.9) per 80 minutes among props in the 2025/26 #URC (min.400 minutes played).

He's also committed 2+ tacklers on 84% of his carries, the best rate of any front-row forward (min.20 carries).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

    Coming into this season:

    • Illo had two career starts, both in Challenge Cup pool stage games.
    • Bohan was 19, had never played a senior game, and hadn't been a standout u20

The progress they've both made is pretty staggering, and testament to their attitudes and the coaching of Lancaster, Tucker, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,460 ✭✭✭FtD v2

I was thinking about that question on young props lately.

In recent times, I struggle to think of one younger than Andrew Porter (21 yrs, 5 months) making his debut against the USA in June 2017.

Other exceptionally young props were a bit older:

    • Cian Healy - 22 yrs 1 month
    • Tadhg Furlong - 22 yrs 9 months
    • Paddy McCarthy - 22 yrs 5 months
    • Tom O'Toole - 22 yrs 9 months
    • Marcus Horan - 22 yrs 9 months

I can't see any younger than this in the professional era (or the 90s for that matter), and Bohan is quite a bit younger (doesn't turn 21 until November).

Sandy McDonald played front row in Ireland's first international in 1875 at the age of 21 years and 2 months.

So if Bohan makes his debut any time before 2027 six nations he sets a new record I think, I can't find any props younger than McDonald.

McDonald was 21 years, 1 month & 26 days making his debut per that, younger than Andrew Porter who was 21 years 4 months and 25 days.

FWIW - I think Gus McCarthy might be the youngest hooker to have ever played for Ireland; he was 21 years and 123 days when he made his debut.

A lot of young players have been given starts for Connacht this year. This never happened before. Lancaster is an exceptional coach both with the team and outside it.

He went and talked to all the coaches at the junior clubs and one of his questions was about players they felt were prospects.

I think he likes Connacht because there is no pressure and nobody interfering with his job. I hope he stays with us for a long time.

Im not sure wee Sandy was a prop as we understand it.

In 1875 there were 20 players, 14 were forwards and scums were just a melee of sorts that could last for minutes! 10 or so minutes!!

I had always thought the youngest prop before professionalism was the late great Ray McLoughlin of Ahascragh.

He was 22 when he made his debut v England in 1962.

Karl Mullen I thought for Hooker. He was also 21 in '47. There might be days in it between the two of them!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 salmson

He was 20 and 2 months. Born Nov. 26 and debut was Jan 47!

According to the Old Belvedere website he played uncapped internationals at 19.

I will show you all respect to the deep knowledge for the Irish rugby history. Maybe Bohan will start (at least off the bench) in the match against Japan this summer. I cannot wait it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,988 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

    Thanks!

The new backs coach, Gerard Mullen, is the grandson of Karl.

    Hi Kita99 san,

I see this game is taking place in Australia. Are there any games taking place in Japan this summer?

No, no one want to play rugby in summer at Japan because of too high temperature=32~35°c (and above 80% humidity) even in night-time. Japanese call it NETTAIYA (meaning tropical night).
