In terms of familiarity and class across the field, that Senegal team is the best I've seen represent Africa

It 'feels' right alright though. There have been reports there's a verbal agreement in place too, which doesn't seem too far fetched since we know Deschamps is leaving.

Aye, actually think England are relatively well stocked and frankly Trent hasnt set the world alight, both the season just gone and his last at LFC to a point. He can have little complaint about not travelling, especially with a coach who just either doesn't fancy him, or, as it seems sometimes, has a personality problem with him.

Think Tuchel's bristling nature contributes as well. At least from the perspective of him pointedly doing the opposite of whats expected when theres the usual crying from the media about 'why isnt Trent out there' whenever England flatter to deceive.

That'll fade away if England progress well, but its always in the background if/when they come unstuck. It'll just be hard to get a bead on England anyway until probably the second knockout stage - barring a complete disaster of course, but they have the squad to go far, especially if Kane starts racking up.

Was only saying to someone that that's something that seems a good addition. Not sure if it's just for a team's opening game or not - no reason it should be mind you so hopefully that's not the case.

Bit of razmatazz that'll really kick in when in the later rounds. Just as long as they don't start bringing out Powerade banners and merch with them of course....

Well somebody said above that regardless of FIFA any host country has a right to apply it's border policy as it sees fit. This one being presumably the well practiced policy that Iranians are only allowed in the US for a period of hours before they have to leave. They can have a nother few hours days later too. All fine and within the rights of the country to apply this well known policy right?

I suppose Mexico could have refused the Iranian players the right to return to their training base … especially if they had an upcoming match against them? I suppose that is the new way for hosting major international sporting events? Rory could find his visa cancelled if he is leading after three rounds in Augusta next year?

TBH, it's a hard situation for Iran and from a football competition point of view you feel a level of sympathy, but it is a very unusual situation. That said, the team/coach themselves are dressing up a bit what happened the other day all the same, or at least leaving out existing detail - the terms of the visa that they were provided with stipulated entry to the US a max of a day before a US-based game with an exit the evening of the match. That was the visa condition laid out for the US agreeing to host the games of a nation they are currently at war with last month. They were never staying overnight - so this expectation of staying in Los Angeles and having a recovery session was never on the cards and I think being used to just reiterate the logistical problems. Which I think is fine, like I said, I do have sympathy from a footballing perspective of a team having it's plans interferred with in the month ahead of the finals.

That said, they aren't backpacking across the American mid-west either to get to their games. They are flying in and out from a border city about 140 miles away for two games 5-6 days apart, with only their final group game requiring extended travel. Obviously not as simple as just rocking up to the airport with visa checks and such, but not exactly hod-carrying either. If they progress, then they'll obviously have to accomodate that. There are other teams playing who have far bigger distances to travel within the US overall, even PL teams have had far longer distances to travel in short timeframes with fixture congestion. So, I think some perspective is also required.

Personally, I think if the US are hosting them they should have their base onsite and should be responsible, but it is a unique situation that presents certain challenges. All teams require security measures both on base and to/from games and the yanks clearly don't feel it is their remit to be responsible for an enemy country's football team. We're not talking some Hollywood thriller scenario whereby the team are smuggling a dirty bomb into the US or some nonsense like that - there are a huge number of situations that they would prefer not to have to deal with of which only one happening would cause an international incident. I mean take your pick from a player or two trying to defect all the way to some mad Zionist or Iranian dissident trying something at their well known in advance original base ? That's even without taking into account it being little more than a petty bureaucratic move to just make things as awkward as possible.

Messi ,mbappe and haaland showing their class in the space of a few hours. France are so impressive when they get into their stride

I would hazard a guess that, in 1 single game, Messi has already outscored Ronaldo’s entire tournament…

(Unless Portugal get awarded loads of penalties)

The US is definitely being petty and disadvantaging Iran by creating uncertainty around journey times, entry approval, meal periods, recovery treatment after games, etc.

Iran captain Mehdi Taremi said the team endured five hours of travel and security checks during what’s normally a very short trip from Tijuana to the Los Angeles area on Sunday.

The only tournament I can think of that reminds me of this is Afcon. It's the only tournament till now where there are this many stories about petty, inept or corrupt goings on. Proper banana republic stuff and it would be great to see a team abandon mid tournament to give Infantino the embarrassment he deserves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,090 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Entirely possible alright, but without knowing the full operational details of the Iranian team's movement it's hard to say for sure. Even taking the 5hrs at face value, that could easily be accounted for with an hour travel either side of stadium dressing room and airport, airport to base, with 3hrs around flight and checks. I mean, I've had travel to Liverpool and London take just as long on occasion, and travel to Portugal not.

Might not even been a delay on the US side for all we know, or it could have been some US security check fellas deciding fook them. Just doesnt seem that extreme relatively speaking to move a group on special visas. Not going to argue it's condusive to football recovery and preparartion by any means, but it could be a whole lot worse - and still might be with more games to play.

As I said, I don't think it should be the case if their group games are US based, but it's a nuanced situation to say the least, and they'd probably have just as much unsettlement under tighter security criss-crossing the US.

At least no one has started shooting at team buses . Like what happened the Togo team in Angola 2010 AFCON.

England v Croatia not disappointing …

I've been really impressed with the camera work in the games I've watched. So many different angles on the goals.
