Hi Ruddy, thanks in advance for any guidance you can give.

Its over 20 years since I had private insurance so I've no idea what to look for these days. 54yo male based in the West, no particular issues but looking for Consultant and scan cover, also history of hip replacements in family so chances are its down the line for me. I have GP card if that makes any difference to everyday cover. After a basic search I came up with Level Health Plan B for about €1500 but don't know how other providers compare?

The big item you are going to need to consider is the loading, if you haven't had insurance in 20 years so you will have a loading of 2% per year over 34. So this is a very important consideration, this will have a big impact on the premium, so i typically recommend a low or entry level plan initially as you pay the loading for 10 years.

Hey Ruddy, thanks again for the reply.

I am strongly considering changing my policy asap as 1) It is costing me a lot of money generally and 2) I am unemployed now for a few months so my savings are running out.

You mentioned waiting until renewal to change. Is this because I will have to pay a cancellation charge/cannot cancel during the contract? If not, I would ideally like to change asap.

If I dont have to pay a large cancellation fee or am tied in to a contract, what plan would you recommend?

Also, do you think a plan with good maternity cover is worth it? From my understanding of talking to others, you dont really get much benefit from the private plans and still ususally have to pay a few k out of pocket anyway when going private, even with decent maternity cover.

    Hey Ruddy,

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster here. Thanks for what you are doing.

I'm 41M and am on VHI Enhanced Care 350. I am ok with what I'm paying and noticed that you have said previously it is relatively good value. What is complicating things is that I have an 8 month old daughter who was free with VHI for the first year so we stuck her on an expensive plan (PMI 24 10). I noticed that level health cover children up to 3 years old. Would there be an equivalent plan to Enhanced care 350 that I could move to with my daughter with Level Health? Neither myself or my daughter have any health issues currently.

    Thanks

With Irish Life you can change your plan mid year. If you need to reduce to minimum cover you are looking at First cover, or if mid level cover you are looking at a My Plan or Benefit.

Yes Plan B would be similar cover to your current plan, so if you moved to Level you could get your 3 year old for free. Reports of some service issues, but premium savings likely well worth it.

I was just wondering about cover for 30 year old female with no medical conditions? She has let her cover lapse for past few years . Needs cover for semi p in private hospitals. Dublin based . Day to day not important. prefer Laya or VHI. Could you suggest a good plan please?

Looking at Signify, Access Care or Access Health? All seem similar.

I think Access Health is good value for the cover offered. Other two plans also ok, if looking at VHI i would be looking at one of the Enhanced Care plan. If level health you are looking at Plan b and if Irish Life Health one of the My Plan range.
