what other right backs do england have? walker, trippier, trent, ben white. its a strange call up for me - trev has 25 career appearances at RB.

Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento is a major doubt for England's World Cup campaign, with Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah poised to replace the full-back.

but a properly functioning FIFA should not give them hosting duties for a World Cup.

A properly functioning FIFA is out to extract as much money as it can from the World Cup.

By the way, how has the US immigration laws affected your viewing of the World Cup ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,068 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

But they did and they have. Complain about FIFA, complain about Infantino, complain to the clouds in the sky - the rules are there and all the hosts are applying their immigration and customs policy as they see fit. It is not dictated to them by FIFA, the RTE panel or anyone else who doesn't have any knowledge of the individual cases where people have been denied entry. Just because Putin ran a visa-free policy a number of years ago is irrelevant to today - there is no such policy in place, nor should there be. Plenty of people have travelled and the tournament appears to be attended well and progressing as well as it can be up to now.

Certainly the individual cases are being highlighted and blown up, as today's world tends to, but frankly, if the cases are being handled as per the norm, there is little recourse.

The Scots seem to be absolutely loving the tournament and the Americans seem to be absolutely loving them too. The Scottish tourist board must be absolutely delighted with the potential $$$ this will generate.

They're stealing the boys in green thunder!

Nope, as has been pointed out to you - it was Germany, South Africa, Brazil, Qatar, Russia… extensive legislation were passed and requirements from FIFA applied. So it is utterly disingenous to suggest it was "just" a visa free policy or just for one tournament. It was part and parcel of how FIFA organised those World Cups.

How FIFA ran recent World Cups to avoid these issues cropping is therefore entirely relevant to any discussion of them.

White is injured, Trent doesn't have the profile that Tuchel wants, Walker and Trippier may be too old for him to consider as full-backs. After that, the pickings are slim.

As has been pointed out, the host country determines entry policy. The laws of the land only change by remit of the installed authority, not a NGO acting as the international governing body of association football. This is simple stuff.

Now, if you have access to the negotiated changes made to US immigration policy made between the US and FIFA, I'd be all ears. Otherwise, FIFA are happy enough for the hosts to operate as they have been - the tournament wouldn't have proceeded if not.

You may not like it, but it doesn't matter. It is what it is. It doesn't matter what happened in the past with regard to other tournaments, there are limits to where FIFA will look to entertain host bids, but they rarely have anything to do with things not associated to the financial return. We've witnessed that for many years. All I can say is that if anyone is planning to travel to the US or others for a game - have your stuff in order, the exact same way as you'd have to at any other time.

Yep, its all on FIFA…… They even made up a fricking Peace Prize to keep a 79 year old man happy

I'm sure you have criticised a referee, board, manager, player decision even though "it is what it is" and this forum would be very quiet if people only spoke about things they could directly change.

To avoid these issues, FIFA ensured that the host country's entry policies for the tournament duration were compatible with the obligations of hosting a global event. Seems like it was simple stuff for FIFA before, or rather they did the hard work - FIFA and the host countries took the responsibility seriously and put in the required effort so that these issues would not occur.

If FIFA have changed their policy, and it leads to issues such as we've seen at this tournament, then it is entirely valid and reasonable for media, sports commentators etc and on discussion boards to criticise them for that.
It may not change things for current tournament but lay down a marker for next one. I assume FIFA officials from countries impacted or potentially impacted by such issues are also paying attention, as are other sporting bodies.

complete irrelevant to the shambles that is FIFA

Some people are just obsessed with America and can't take any criticism. Going as far even to pretend the US are the first host country to be at war with a contestant.

Russia was at war with Ukraine in 2018 despite what Putin wants to claim.

    That's just a fact.

Countries have also host athletes at the Olympic despite being at war. So no this situation is not unique as claimed.

Russia may have been at war with Ukraine in 2018, but Ukraine was not a contestant at the finals:

Ukraine didn't qualify for the Russia World Cup. In fact, I believe UEFA ensured they were separated in the qualifying rounds.

If someone doesn't agree that two finals placed countries, with one hosting, being actively at war (though hopefully not for much longer) isn't a unique situation - then I don't know where to go. Besides, even if it had happened in the past, it doesn't stop it from being an apt descriptor.

Both Russia/Ukraine and USA/Iran weren't at war when they were awarded the World cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,068 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

It's not about when this and that were awarded host duties though. FIFA had a concern over possible scenarios if Ukraine qualified at the time in the European groupings. Seem to recall a neutral country venue being mooted for their games if they got through - what would have happened if they had to play each other, God knows.

Didn't matter in the end, but UEFA made sure to have them separated for the Euro qualifiers, at least that is my recollection without the google.

This year is out of the ordinary with the US and Iran though. Don't see the debate around it. It's not fair to the Iranians, plus it's an uncomfortable situation for the yanks, but there has to be some understanding and delicacy around security issues in the current climate. If football folk had their way, there would be no issues - I mean, keep politics out of sport is a lofty goal after all - the teams could play as they are, even against each other and shake hands. I mean, even back in 90s, these two meeting was a massive deal.

Biggest scandal which shouldn't be overlooked is the lack of a 5pm/6pm game on some days of the group stage.

Yesterday was the first day I felt like it was the World Cup so I'm now sitting broken on the couch doing my best Pablo Escobar meme impersonation.

and the Nobel Fair Play Sports Award goes to Donald and Giovanni. It would be wonderful if Iran and US had to play each other.

Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei says they are the "most oppressed" team at the World Cup after having last-minute travel restrictions imposed on them.

Speaking after his side's 2-2 draw with New Zealand, on Monday night, Ghalenoei said they had expected to stay in Los Angeles overnight and have a recovery session the following day but were told after the final whistle to immediately return to their training base in Mexico.

Iran were originally due to be based in Tucson, Arizona, for the duration of the World Cup but moved their camp to Tijuana, Mexicoin late May after encountering logistical and visa issues.

"After the game they said to us 'you have to leave immediately'," Ghalenoei said.

"We've been asked to get on a plane and return to our camp in Tijuana and we are really troubled by that.

"They are forcing us to go back early. They are making the situation more and more difficult, more hurdles, but we're not going to let that stop us from doing our best."

Nice job! I lost 190 dollars (160 euros) on mine, and only managed to sell it today. Better than nothing at this stage though.

It may well be the case. If he can't get into a squad when Livramento and White are both injured, and when James is already an injury liability, then it would appear he's really out of the picture under this Coach.

Tuchel still has options in fairness. Quansah and Stones have both played RB, Spence is versatile enough to play FB either side, so I don't think he is too worried

of all the new ‘innovations’ at this World Cup, the one that I actually like is the entire squad being out on the pitch for the national anthems..

not sure I recall seeing that before..
