    Hi All,

I'm trying to figure out if there is some issue within the electrical wiring of the house, or the Smart meter as my monthly bill has now reached €324 for 2 months, the provider is ESB.

I live alone in the house, not sharing, and the appliances running are Fridge, Timer Water heater, and 2 laptops, 2 phones, and electrical stove.

My two months units are 505, and I'm starting to suspect something is going on, unless the price has increased due to war, fuel costs etc..

What is the breakdown of costs on the bill? If there are only 505 units then that bill seems extreme unless you are out of contract and therefore on a very high rate. But even then the higher rates are unlikely to cost that much after taking standing charge etc out of the total.

This is what it shows, for 2 months..

505 is the amount of day units, you also have 221 night units.

This totals 726 units over 64 days, or around 11 units per day. Its probably a little above average given the time of year for what usage you are describing but not alarmingly so. 4200kWh per year is the national average

Electricity is very expensive these days, shop around for a better price that what you are on - there are better rates available from other suppliers

You mentioned the appliances you are running. You didnt mention a washing machine/tumble dryer/dishwasher? They would use a fair bit? How often is your water heater on? Kettle/Microwave/Lighting - what about these? Do you have anything else like a pump for a well that is running constantly?

Also, ESB are not an electricity provider (they just provide the meter), your bill looks like you are an Energia customer.

42c per unit is extortionate, plus there is no discount.

You need to shop around and switch provider.

Yes, Washing machine, and the Drier as there as well..

    No Kettle, Microwave..

Lighting is 2 small sets in the hall, I only use 1 set..

Also I think the water heater timer which I have set for 45 minutes twice, and another 30 minutes a day, will reduce that..

    No well..

The water heater could be about 30 - 40% of your usage based on what you have said there on for 2hrs per day. Washer/dryer are going to use a bit.

There is nothing wrong with your meter or wiring, its time to get a new electricity supplier

I think it's cheaper to heat hot water by a gas boiler if you have the option.

OP, you mentioned 'electric stove'. Is that a cooker or a heater? Is your immersion tank insulated?

You need to get on some kind of plan which involves a discount. I put your units into a spreadsheet and applied the rates I'm paying Bord Gais, the gross amount for electricity is about the same but I get a 20% discount. And my daily standing charge is 61.52c, you are paying 83c. That standing charge alone represents a difference of €78 per annum between your bill and mine.

Thanks for pointing that out, I'll change the setting..

You seem to be paying the full unit rate. You need to avail of a discounted rate by either switching supplier or speaking to your current supplier.

You could heat your water just on the night rate 11pm to 8am approx. That would also contirbute - no matter what plan you are on.

Upload your usage file and it will tell you which plan across all of the energy providers is the cheapest.

To be clear OP, you should register on ESB networks and that's where you can see all the historic usage data on a half-hourly basis since your smart metre was installed. This in itself will give more insight into how much electricity you're using thought-out the day and night.

i did not go the smart meter route as just myself in the house and bill is 124.21 with yuno for 1 month.

I do use washing machine , micro, immersion element to top up heat from solar panels.

At night using laptop light and not switching on Father and Son lights as are halogen.

tv and radio gets long use.

At that price seems a good deal.

That's a big bill for one person for one month. How many units do you use in a typical month?

I fail to see the logic in your statement …

i did not go the smart meter route as just myself in the house

It doesn't matter how many people are in the house. If you're paying €124 per month, you need to monitor your consumption and downloading the data from a smart meter is the way to start doing that.

You need to shop around for a better deal. With Electric Ireland my day unit rate is currently 0.3397, peak rate is 0.3624 and night rate is 0.1785. I then get a 30% discount on the unit prices. My standing charge is currently 0.6303 per day. Yours is much higher. Electric Ireland are increasing their prices in July though, so look at all providers and see which will suit you best. Once you get a better rate, discount, you should see significant reduction in your bills.

You have a night meter so invest in an immersion timer and do a big top up for water the day during the night at the low rate. As the others say check out switcher.ie or bonkers.ie as that day rate is way too high and your Standing charge is high. It sounds like you have timed out from a deal and have been placed on their default plan. You might even find an EV plan might work and you can shift your immersion etc. into that much lower cost window.

I live in a 1 bed apartment with a smart meter & heat pump. My bills are around €105 per month, but that includes a 24% discount which will expire at the end of the year, so I will have to switch provider.

I have a flat rate. None of this day/night stuff.

Wife and I are in a pretty large dormer (approx 3000sq ft) and our bill is 150 quid every two months. Ballpark 310 units.

Dryer and dishwasher are ornaments. As is the oven. Clothes are aired and dishes in the sink. Air fry or gas hob. Open fire and solid fuel stove. Both at work 9-5.30 mon-fri.

Your electrical stove and water heater could be the culprits. Along with that 42c per unit rate. Yikes!

Think we are paying 28/29c - old school meter. Not touching a "smart meter".

yep, your night rate is less than half your day rate - but your daytime usage is 70% of your total consumption.

i was paying pretty much the same after our smart meter install. that rate is not welded to your meter.

Also - what time does the Night Rate kick in?

You're using almost HALF (221) of your "daytime" (505) electricity at night?

At night in my gaff - there's nothing on!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,043 ✭✭✭Hooked

Oh I know it's not "tied to the meter"… I just don't trust these "smart" meters.
