Yes, apparently it has happened. Lamouchi out and Mondher Kebaier in, allegedly.

I didn't see Sweden scoring 5 goals in the tournament to be honest! Ayari who got 2, has a Tunisian parent and seemed to be fired up for the game.

Here it's a silly game but in the States it's become a white power sign. It made for a very awkward conversation with my American in-laws when it showed up in my wedding photo's!

It's from Malcolm in the middle I thought?

Lopes starts - so first ever current LoI player at a World Cup up at 5pm

(Ghana also have an LoI player, but he's the third choice keeper so unlikely to play across the month)

Emma Hayes tactical insight on ITV has been the best use of hydration/ad break I've seen (admittedly not seen all games). Will be interested in watching those rotations in wide areas more

He was rightly. Shocking stuff from Spain, but you can only draw against what's in front of you!

For the first time since Paul McGrath Crumlin has a sportsman doing it proud on the global stage. Well done Pico Lopes and Cabo Verde. What a result.

But but but....den wimen know nuttin about football, much better with ex pros like Wazzza and Kenny Cunningham on da telly.

Hayes and Fallon on RTE are very good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,505 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Belgium with 2 club mates as a midfield could be a weapon even before you get to the point that theyre both excellent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,094 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

I like when Fallon is on RTE. She did match commentary for the U21s when they played Montenegro or Bosnia a few years ago. For an U21s game she went into more detail about certain players and how the opposition like to play and set up than many do for senior games.

    Cunningham is some dose.

He's unbearable. Had to switch channel.

Even Micah Richards on BBC is a slight improvement!

Haven’t seen as much of the tournament as id like so far but still an ok amount.

It seems VAR is being used a lot more sensibly here than the PL. Am I wrong in that? Struggling to remember any/many VAR red cards, penalties or disallowing of goals.

    :)

I didn't think they would get a result but putting them in with the likes of Curacao was mad. Well worth their draw.

You don't get that discipline energy and organisation just from other teams being poor either.

Belgium have embarrassment of riches but just can't play as team and constantly flop

Something we're starting to notice in this tournament so far is that the 'fluid forward line' systems are not working. Teams not playing through a centre-forward are just getting stymied. Belgium, Spain, even Brazil (who played Igor Thiago, but didn't play through him and ignored his strengths).

Meanwhile teams with strikers that they weren't afraid to repeatedly hit like Sweden, the US, and Germany are the only ones to create a bit of separation. Maybe just a quirk of the fixtures, but it'd make me more confident of Norway and maybe even Austria with old man Arnautovic avoiding the slips other sides have had tomorrow. With Mbappe (and friends!) and Alvarez as goalscoring focal points you'd expect them to be alright too.

Ultimately, and not exactly revolutionary, it seems no matter how good your team is, you really need a lad who can just bloody finish the thing in tight spaces.

2026 - Will probably be posting here at 1:42am while watching some game that I hadn't planned to.

    Yep

Just watched Saudi v Uruguay, now thinking of hanging on for some of Iran v NZ.

The appointment of Martinez to guide that golden generation really fcuked them over, they are still feeling the effects of it.

1978 Vaguely remember the ticker tape final. My first memory of sitting down to watch a complete match was Arsenal v Man U 1979 FA Cup final

1982 Gerry Armtrong's goal v Spain. At 13 years of age, I couldn't understand how N Ireland still went out despite beating the hosts.

1986 Spent a part of my Summer holidays in Southie, Boston. I remember the final & how HBO went for ad breaks during play. There was a goal missed because of this. I also remember asking myself "whats that spiky like shadow on the pitch?" (It was a new sound system put in especially for the tournment)

1990 Cannegia getting poleaxed in the first few minutes of the opening match. Ireland walloping both England & Holland to 1-1 draws lol lol

1994 A jaded Ireland team tempered expectations. A tired Irwin letting the ball bounce in the box which led to Mexico's first goal.

1998 to now: Apart from 2002 for obvious reasons, world cups have become a blure due to age & cultural indifferences

Don't think so. The ratings gap between Cape Verde and Spain is bigger than between Curacao and Germany - it's fair to expect a similar result. It's the biggest World Cup upset ever in rankings terms (counting a draw as an upset of course). I'd be wary of using that to jump to conclusions.

Cape Verde defended really well, but let's be honest, in possession they were as poor a side as we've seen at a World Cup. If they'd conceded first half, the floodgates would have opened. We've seen those games before.

BBC have a stat that Spain have made 2500+ passes since their last World Cup goal - as -Rebel- says, sometimes you have to put the ball in the net and discuss your options later. It's why I think Norway are a dark horse for the whole thing

I've been pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable the football has been sp far. Most teams are having a go, leading to plenty of attacking play and goals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,551 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

and 16 teams haven’t even played a game yet!!

    2nd group H play winner group J.

This means Spain and Uruguay will be playing to win the group to avoid Argentina who will certainly win their weak looking group,

A nice piece on the BBC about Cape Verde's man-of-the-match goalkeeper, Vozinha.

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c0ryz4n2v0qo

Just a short quote from the piece: "I cried because I grew up with my grandparents," said Vozinha after being awarded player of the match. "Unfortunately they were not here. They died a few years before. They were everything for me, everything for my life.

"And also because of my mum. She didn't manage to be here because of the visa. Because of the money you have to pay for the visa, we didn't manage on time. I would like her to be here."

The USA policy on visas appears to be highly discriminatory and regressive. I would hope that some way can be found to enable Vozinha's mother to see the next matches.

Delighted for Roberto 'Pico' Lopes imagine a fella from Crumlin with a side like that and a 40 year old goalkeeper drawing against Spain at A WC. Always a tidy calm player. He won't have to buy a pint in Cape Verde for life now. What a story to tell future generations.

He nearly ignored his call up because it was written in Portuguese on his Linkedin. He thought it was spam. The President of the CV FA had to write a letter in English to him.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Great statistics from yesterday four draws in one day, the first time that happened since 1958 World Cup in Sweden.

Cape Verde only conceded one foul in their draw v Spain, first time that happened since 1966.

    One's for the pub quiz's.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.
