His Vegas property can be seen from the strip but it isn't actually on the strip, i.e. Las Vegas Blvd. It is on a side street off strip. He's probably annoyed that he didn't get the prestige of a strip location.

You can see why Dana would row in behind Trump. With him he had a potential president who'd support the UFC and help it get the recognition it deserved. States like New York were banning it as late as 2014.

IMO it'd be a big mistake not to give the UFC cross party support. It's now hit a new height and is a mainstay in American sports. Trump has a lot of bad policies but this event has undoubtedly been one of his biggest successes as president. What a way to celebrate 250 years of the US with some of the baddest warriors on the planet.

I've always been a fan of the UFC, MMA, boxing and combat sports in general. My posting history is here for everyone to see.

Last night was a historical event that will be talked about for years to come. You have to give Trump and the UFC credit for pulling it off.

It'll be talked about for a long time to come alright, but not for the reasons you think.

It was supposed to be a present to the nation… while being a broadcast on an Ellison owned company which had a subscription charge

Tell us you’re a Trump fanboy without actually saying it. Cowardly stuff.

The office of President exists to serve the American people, not to promote this sh*tty "sport".

There's nothing to indicate it will be spoken about 'for years to come'. That's the issue with UFC, they follow up their events so fast that they all blur into each other. There's 2 more in the next few weeks and then there's the McGregor return which will probably take a lot of attention away from this.

Dear Lord, you really have the big political priorities...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,137 ✭✭✭RickBlaine

The reason it was historical is because no previous president would have supported having that type of event on the white house lawn and the Lincoln memorial. I appreciate that sport has its fans but there should be some manner of respect for the institutions and history those buildings represent. What's next - a drag race around Arlington cemetery! And despite the spin of it being part of the 250th anniversary, it was basically a billionaire's birthday party at a time when the cost of living is a serious concern for the very people who voted him into the white house, which he is now using as an exclusive events venue.

Ask anyone who isn't already into UFC to name one fighter from the White House event, and they couldn't. I've read several of their names already today, and even I can't remember any of their names. Even the guy who made the comment about Michelle Obama... No idea.

The only reason the UFC event will be remembered is because it was at the White House, and that's not a good thing. UFC fans and probably a lot of MAGA f*ckheads might like it, but the vast majority of commentary about it is how utterly disgraceful it was that this event was held on White House grounds and obviously because of Trump's birthday.

It was part of the celebrations for America 250. The Whitehouse has hosted various events in the past.

That proves my point earlier about how big a deal this was for the UFC. Dana made a great decision forming good relations with Trump. It's paid off more then anyone could imagine.

The fact you and many others have read their names shows how how much publicity this has garnered. As for that Josh guy i didn't actually know his name either before his last fight when he unleashed his new childish persona on Curtis blades who's a very respectful UFC veteran.

Trust me almost everyone who follows the UFC wants to see him knocked out for his childish comments. Unfortunately people tuning in to see him knocked out inadvertently makes him a draw.

Everything Trump does gets publicity. It's no help to the UFC or the fighters when that publicity is bad and doesn't garner new followers.

Again, nobody who wasn't already into UFC cares about the actual UFC event or fights. It's the debasement of the White House that people are talking about.

The publicity was very helpful to those that fought. I'm happy for them except that Hokit guy because he's going to be unbearable especially with the added attention from the Obama insult. I generally try to avoid his stuff.

The optics amongst the fighting community was very positive overall after last night. It was the craziest event I've ever seen. Like something out of a movie at times.

Discussing the fight with a family member and they immediately said "did you see what that idiot said?" Yep people recognizing it as a huge sporting event...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,979 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Again, the publicity is no use to the fighters if nobody remembers the fighters. And the optics amongst the fighting community may be positive, but that's because it was a fighting event and they're already part of the fighting community. "Choir very positive about priest's preaching" not exactly that unusual.

As for being like something out of a movie... The movie it was most like has already been mentioned several times today as well as far back when the event was being proposed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,090 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

Lol. This was the same event that one winner gave his medal to Trump.

    It's always about Trump.

    Always.

The whole point of mainstream publicity is to pull in a small portion as the next generation of fans. Every UFC fan had a moment when something caught their attention and they caught the bug and this event will be no different.

It also increased the stock of fighters who won. Gaethje will go up another echelon after finally becoming champ in spectacular fashion.

Ruffy massively increased his stock dismantling chandler on the biggest stage. Likewise O'Malley, Gane and Hokit has solidified himself as enemy number 1 amongst the hardcore MMA fanbase.

He's a very liked president amongst a lot in the combat world. They appreciate what his support for the sport which is their livelihoods.

What medal are you talking about? Was it the Hokit guy who put it around his neck?

It sure will, but not in the way you seem to think.

I'd say that's saying nothing good about the combat world. They've got carte blanche to say whatever they want and the rapist in chief is apparently much liked in that world. Honestly you're not selling the UFC world to me...

Like a movie....almost like it was scripted so the desired fighter won so he could start spouting his brain mush rubbish that coincidentally appeals to Trumpy and his base!

Combat sports like MMA is not for everyone and I personally don't try to pull in people it's not for. UFC is sport mixed with entertainment and it's probably why Trump is attracted to it.
