Someone at my kids school has got themselves an A6 Avant etron, saw it last week for the first time. First time I've seen one in the flesh on the road. Such a class looking car.

There is one in a house I pass by a fair bit, looks great, pretty compact in the flesh, surprised to see mention above that it is longer that an ICE version, looks much smaller than my previous A6 Avant and especially really narrow compared to my previous A6 allroad.

Hi all, its been a long time since I have been on boards. The case you mention above is all true as I know this person and helped with gathering information to help fight this known motor defect due to coolant intrusion caused by seal failure. It took a lot of fight with multiple emails by him and near legal action to get that end result but he got there in the end and I will do the same if that time ever comes. I have put around 25k on my 2022 55 Sline Black Edition since purchasing and just about to hit the 80k mark with zero issues. I check the coolant reservoir and cannister monthly for any coolant loss and its been fine so far and hope that continues. On a side note he enquired about a trade for a low mileage Q6 that was in Audi North recently and was told by the salesman it has a few issues including a failed charging port and would not be able to sell it to him at the moment. I would be weary buying a car with these sort of issues at such low mileage and why have they been traded in so early. Just food for thought…

Do ye know which Q6 this was with Audi North Dublin? Is it still on their site?

So I got a "Drive System Warning! Limited Performance" message coming home just there. (2km from home). Was low on battery (20km left).

Parked up now. Worried as a quick Google suggests the famous motor issue could be the cause but could also just need a software reset when the car has been sitting for 15 mins or so.

    Worried ☹️

Is that not std when at a really low state of charge ?

I hope so. Fingers crossed. Will check in the morning when it is charged up.

Wife's Q4 displays that message when it goes below certain KMs range so I don't think it's a sign of anything.

The message was gone this morning but I only did a short drive.

Probably wrecking your heads with this by now lads, but I keep changing my mind on whether to buy one of these and ye are all very knowledgeable.

I think it's not helped by me endlessly googling and getting all the "ye should spend as little as possible on a car" / "DEPRECIATING ASSET!!!" type posts on reddit and other places.

And probably not helped by the high end EV market being a great place to quickly lose money at the moment.

On the one hand, I'm like fcuk it, you only live once, and I've always loved the Audi estate cars. On the other hand, that little demon of "splurging a huge deposit into a car is mad, ye could use that money for some serious other stuff" keeps coming back. Buy a new VW instead and save a chunk.

I've looked at the alternatives at this price point. The iX3 really does nothing for me, I just don't like the styling. The EX60 I am really unsure about the interior.

To drop down a level the ID7 is really the only other option to maintain the level of space I'm after, but I am thinking I'll end up regretting it. Lower range and slower charging too which seem like real practical concerns.

What do yous reckon? Terrible time to be buying high-end EV? Is there anything else I need to be considering here? Or how did you justify it to yourselves?

I used to drive big audis and bmws bought 2nd hand, 5 series, A6 had loads of them, thought id drive them until I could no longer drive! Never crossed my mind to drive other brands. Early 20s with some BMW 3 series moving into bigger ones and slightly newer as i moved into my 30s. Was even considering A8s and X5s around the year 2022.

But now I drive mainstream non premium. Ive 2 cars outside about the price of a well specced A6/Q6/IX3 and I think they *subjectively *both look better than any of those and thats what does it for me. The badge doesnt anymore. But I'll concede it holds sway for many.

The difference in EV land between an audi and some mainstream brands 20/30/40k cheaper is not huge, not as big as it was in the past.

I'm not going to buy a single car depreciating from 80k euro, my financial situation doesnt allow me. Theres cars 95% as nice (and even still its subjective) for 60-70% of the price if you are worried about loss of value thats where id be looking. Buy the expensive premium brand and you'll lose your stones guaranteed so decide whether its worth it for you or not. Maybe it is, maybe it isnt. If you're worried youre prob like the rest of us and money matters to you so weigh it all up. I'd strongly urge looking closely at other brands though and you might be surprised at what you find

As long as you are ok with not having much of your deposit left at the end of a PCP term ( if you are PCP ing ) go for it, expensive cars ev or not were always a way to lose lots of money !

years ago I was ordering and speccing up a BMW in the garage, when I was adding kit and justifying it to myself and the sales guy that it will help it holds it value if it has all these extras I was adding.
in a moment of honesty he said to me, in car values there is only one rule, the more you spend the more you lose…

In other words your 20k Hyundai inster loses half its value in three years you’re down 10k.
your 80k Q6 etron loses half its value you’re down 40k. Only you can decide if it’s worth it to you.

I know I’ll love the car every day I own it. I won’t regret it.

but I’m wondering how I’ll feel in 6/7/8 years time when I go to upgrade and realise to maintain the same standard I need to throw in another huge chunk. 😅

    Thats the dilemma!

Depends on your own situation, it wouldnt be for me losing 40k in 3 or 4 years on 1 car but I'll still lose big enough compared to many

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,077 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

You may be getting hung up on the concept of "maintaining the same standard" here.

We have no idea what EVs will be available and at what price in 8 years time.

Might be all Chinese - who knows.

Buy a used Audi EV if that’s the type of vehicle you’re wanting. At 2-3 years old, there should be value to be had. It’ll still lose a lot of money but at least the first owner will have taken the biggest hit.

  • Administrators Posts: 56,570 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Problem here is 2-3 year old Audi EVs are almost entirely the old Etron with the motor issue. Which is a risk I’m not willing to take.

    Q6/A6 are simply too new.

e-Tron GT if you don’t need huge space or consider a BMW i5 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,994 ✭✭✭donkey balls

When my E tron was in the garage this time last year (Suspected coolant leak) I test drove the BYD Seal&Sealion. At the time the missis said they are nice cars,But i would regret moving away from Audi(Maybe she just likes driving my car)

Have the A6 a year in July and while i had some initial issues not with the car itself but the dealership, I'm starting to like the car. My reasoning for buying the new car was that i just wanted rid of the E tron and with my Father having passed away a few weeks beforehand. I was in one of these moods that ye can't take the money with you so might as well spend it.

I suppose it really depends on your circumstances, Actually just talking to the misiss and was saying i will keep the car until 2028. She reckons i get a newer model within in 6 months.

Also the fact the prices are coming down would be another reason to get one imo.

When I was looking to switch from the Model Y, i was looking at both the Q6 and ID7 GTX(A6 etron wasnt available yet in Ireland). I was strongly leaning towards the ID7 GTX tourer but then it disappeared from the Volkwagen Ireland website completely.

If I was looking at the A6 Etron Avant and ID7 GTX tourer today, I'm definetly opt for the ID7 GTX , it has every optional extra as standard with the exception of the towbar. I wouldnt look at the standard model as with the changes in the grant, that price will jump condiferably if they dont change things. Yes 68k is still too much for a volkwagen (although I spent more on a Touareg back in 2018) and percentage wise you will lose the same as the Audi, but the equivalent A6 Etron Avant would probably be 15-20k more expensive.

the 24 Q6 with high spec you were discussing earlier has already lost a ton of value from new. I would think that over the course of the next few years it wouldn’t depreciate any more and may perform better than a mainstream brand bought new for similar money now.

  • Administrators Posts: 56,570 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

That one has a faulty charge port, waiting on replacement part that’s going to take a while apparently

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,173 ✭✭✭carsfan2

if you liked the car, might give you negotiating power to do a deal subject to it being fixed and warrantied?

Wouldn’t bother me if they are sorting it.

  • Administrators Posts: 56,570 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Wouldn't bother me either but they advised me there's a backlog on the part and the wait time will be months.

That's what happend with me last year when they eventually found the issue with the E tron SX6 battery module, I was jumping for joy that it wasn't the coolant leak. But still had to wait for the part to come in and to be fitted.

I think it's more down to garages not having enough lads trained up on EV that is the problem.

On another note i wonder would a garage who had to replace a motor due to coolant leaks be willing to still sell the fat e tron.
