Des Curran is out there I know that much, as was Houghton with him for a game

He was pretty dreadful. Thought it was just opening nerves at the start when he was being asked about the FAI stuff.....just mid sentence pauses where you can almost see the gears turning very slowly, doesn't communicate well at all either with the annoying voice mumbling. Seemed to continue though, so one to tune out unless a switch gets flipped and he suddenly starts saying something worth listening to and getting it across.

It means they also have 4 hours of their generic morning sh1te that they don't have to show for 2-3 weeks..

Not everyone is into soccer or even sports.

There are people who would watch that "generic morning sh1te" a million times quicker than sports.

RTE are a public service broadcaster, they have to balance their output.

Interesting result in Group C, Scotland get the win they need while putting early pressure on Morocco and Brazil. Could well be an upset in that group.

In 2022 7 out of 8 third place teams finished on 4 points, so judging off that Scotland need another draw at least. In 2018 though 6 third place teams only had 3 points so they've a pretty good chance of going through based of that year.

Totally given up on RTE at this stage. Will only watch on BBC or ITV going forward.

BBC have some excellent hosts, especially Kelly, take Joe Hart out last night the analysis was fair and balanced. Thought Scott Brown was very good as was McFadden on Co comms

no your absolutely right, I’ve been waiting all week to watch this morning’s episode of Channel 4’s Junior Bake Off on RTÉ 2 that was first broadcast in 2023…

There was an error displaying this embed.

Brazil and Marocco will be fine, they’ll each get a minimum 4, although more than likely 5/7 points each

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

RTE I know has its own thread elsewhere, but I’ve long since given up on them being anyway competent. For balance I do think Cantwell is quite good for someone who’s primary sport is the GAA

I thought the ref cam would be interesting but I find the jittery clips hard to watch and they're very short.

it’s crap, but not as crap as the water breaks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,551 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

yeah it’s a bit of a gimmick in soccer as the ref is always moving

Works much better in rugby where there are a lot more set pieces so the ref can spend more time stationary… (also the cameras used in rugby are bigger and appear to give a better picture)

ref cam is good or will prove to be good when certain things happen where it’s the best angle to see it.

Yesterday : Morocco very good, very attacking. It did cost them as Vini exploited being left up while Hakimi attacked for the Brazil goal.

Brazil: only showed individual ability and that was mainly only Vini. Thiago and Paqueta could have few complaints if they were dropped next time out. Raphinia won’t be dropped but Mazouri held him well.

didn’t see the Scotland game but they just aren’t any good if you go through their squad. What’s better than one slow ponderous centre forwards, two slow ponderous centre forwards. Doak is playing coz Hes the only player with pace but he’ll be figured out by Brazil and Morocco..could well be another early exit.

Türkiye were hopeless playing against a low block, owned the ball but resorted to low xG shots. Needed a plan B. The Aussies punked them on the break.

Swiss; a boring team, Ndoye, Vargas and Embolo lack inspiration. Should still win the group as it’s the lowest quality group in the competition.

you’re obsessed with that subject matter. I didn’t hear the Ireland v Israel match discussion was it brought up? If it was he’s entitled to give his opinion. if he said something you disagree with that would probably be enough for you, you’re fairly trenchant about it.

James McClean has been on RTE as a pundit before, he’s still new relatively to the game. I wonder is it his accent that has irked some on here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Only 2 teams have impressed me, Morocco and the US, Scotland looked bang average and Australia are very limited although they kept a good shape in the second half, but they can thank their keeper for that win

First proper mismatch this evening with the Germans. Should see 5/6 goals

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

He has been a pundit before on a few occasions. He is not articulate, he speaks through his teeth and just seem a natural. Honestly, he comes across as a bit thick. That’s just my opinion on him.
I couldn’t give a fcuk what his opinions are on Israel

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,507 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

James McClean was diagnosed as an adult as autistic. I don’t know enough about what the means but might explain behaviors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,507 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Morocco surprised me but are a bit open at the back and not sure they’ll score that many goals.

USA were good but I wasn’t that surprised: they have half a good team which was enough versus Paraguay who just looked very meh when I went through their squad on the guardian player guide. The og Paraguay scored, Jesus Christ.

The only team we’ve seen yet thst has a chance of winning it are Brazil and Carlo’s got to figure out their team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

I wasn’t if that so I’ll take back a bit of the harshness in my last post

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,094 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Morocco are coming off the back of two good tournaments. There's been some upheaval with the change in manager but they'll make it tough for teams.

He took a stance on the poppy issue which drew a lot of heat and criticism and some of it inexplicably from these shores just for having the temerity to stick his neck out. He was articulate in his explanation of his stance.

He also drew criticism for a social media post wearing a balaclava which since then a band like Kneecap have kind of been accepted by the mainstream as tongue in cheek. I think he’s an intelligent guy and plenty of courage in his convictions. Some people won’t like his opinions because maybe they’re a bit lefty or Nordie Republican and won’t like him “as a pundit or whatever” but that’s to do with their own personal opinions.

He has over 100 caps for his country and is as entitled to have a go at the pundit gig as any of them. After that it’s up to him to know his information and come across well. He’s still fairly new at it.

I'm obsessed? It was the first thing on the bloody programme. Fair play jumping in with the daft dig.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,336 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

As a fellow Derry mucker, I think James is a fairly poor pundit. But he is new to it and will have to improve.

I think his slow speech and constant pauses is down to one thing. Us Derry ones speak VERY fast. If he was to go on rte and speak in his normal voice, you'd all be up in arms about it. I think he has been told to slow down by those in rte. And this is his way of doing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,223 ✭✭✭✭TheCitizen

I didn't see the start must have a look. "Jumping in with a daft dig"?, people are entitled to their views. I'd safely say whatever James said wouldn't tally with your well repeated views on the thread re the upcoming Ireland Israel match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,223 ✭✭✭✭TheCitizen

He's been telt to slow it down by the Mexicans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,434 ✭✭✭MacDanger

The Brazilians were fond of leaving a bit on the Moroccans last night, much more physical that you'd typically expect

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,379 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

My view being Ireland should play the game they are obligated to play. But it is utterly irrelevant to a World Cup match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,223 ✭✭✭✭TheCitizen

I could be wrong but my point (post 1636 above) was you might have had a predisposed view on James due to his "Palestine guff" as you called it above?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,006 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

He's not very good as a TV pundit unfortunately. Drab and monotone - you need to have a certain type of personality for this type of work and a bit of energy about you (and he doesn't have either).

Nope I've always liked him and found him constantly being cast as the "panto villain" boring and tiring. But aside from the Palestine stuff the rest of his performance was just awful.
