Looked at the favourable forecast this morning and decided to head west to Mullingar from home near Cross Guns. Picked up the canal at Confey and had a very pleasant downwind spin with only the odd stop for photos. I was a bit apprehensive about the state of the gravelled stretches given the recent weather but, other than a few shallow pools, it was fine. Made it to Mullingar station with enough time to pick up a well deserved chicken wrap in Chocolate Brown before catching the 3 o'clock train home. Happy to see Furey's open (even though I didn't drop in) and Mary Lynch's new colour scheme is very classy!

3 of us did the Royal Canal 200 Audax as a permanent yesterday, the name is a little deceiving as about 56km is on the Old Rail Trail to Moate and back, we started/finished at Mary Lynches. I was a bit concerned that the surface might be poor in places given the recent weather and the fact that the last time I was up that way ( a couple of years ago) there was a good bit of deterioration in places. As it turned out it was fine, 2 of us were on road bikes, me with 32mm GP5000s and Brian on 28s while the other chap was on his Diverge with pathfinder pros, none of us had any hassle.

It was good to see areas being resurfaced with a new layer of grit, hopefully the rest of it will be done in due course, there are some sections with mini potholes that need watching for but you can still pick a safe path through.

We did a 2 and a half stop ride, the first 2 were planned, coffee and a sambo in Streamstown then soup in The Richmond Inn in Cloondara, the half came when Brian punctured right outside a Maxol in the centre of Mullingar so we had a late coffee to warm us up for the last 10km out to the van.

Great to get a 200km Audax in with no traffic to worry about, I think we had to give way to one car on one of the shared spaces and apart from that we had no interaction with traffic.

Tow path closed between Cross Guns Bridge and Broom Bridge until the 20th, for investigation works. Think there were signs up about it, but only saw them from a distance. Just heard about it online today.

Yes, the investigation works are at that rough section where the path goes under the railway line and also further up towards Broombridge.

I've noticed they've had it open, outside of their working hours, which is good.

By anny chance does anyone train / do night spins on the completed sections at night!? I’m 3-4 miles away and was giving it thought.

3.5 months to resurface this small section at Ashtown? Happening right when the weather is getting better for cyclists!!

Are they widening it? Can’t remember the original plans. Had noticed they’ve a sign up on the path to notify people alright.

Facebook suggesting it's was already poor long before the nearby building work.

There seems to be a 3 min diversionary route using the estate behind it. Not tried it myself.

Is the closure at Ashton just a short section, easy to divert around?

It's amazing that the contractor didn't put in any proper signage or suitable routing as a result of the closure. The route you've shown requires you to mount footpaths as there is no through access for cars. They should have at least provided an opening wide enough for a bike to pass if they are trying to limit car access.

Mounting a foot path is normal on almost every cycling commute I've done in Dublin.

Tarmac down on this section now.

Which is not a good thing! It means that cycling routes are completely disjointed.

Not ideal sure. But it's a practical necessity pretty much everywhere. It's a non issue in my mind.

I'd have a bigger issue why they built so close to the canal leaving hardly any room for any future widening any amenities on the canal. It's baffling.

Section by Ashtown station has reopened now.

Tried the Deep Sinking to see if the new surfacing goes all the way from Castleknock to Porterstown Road and it does😊 It’s not perfect and still quite narrow but I had no problems on a road bike with 25mm tyres. It's a pretty similar surface to the next section west to Clonsilla Station.

    That's an improvement.

One hopes it might get better on the next funding visit.

My hope is that Fingal get their collective fingers out and upgrade the full Castleknock to Leixlip section to full Greenway standards.

I'm hoping to go from Dublin city centre to Maynooth in the next couple of weeks. When I did it last summer, there was a long section before Leixlip that was a bit rough, all grass, but it worked out. How is it this year, not too muddy? Still doable on a road bike?

Other than that the pictures of the Deep Sinking look great. I walked that entire section last time, wonder if I'll be braver this time.

Was on it earlier from leixslip to Ashtown & it was almost perfect, you will enjoy it.

Headed out west along the Royal again today. The barrier just after Castleknock station is an odd one where you can lift the handlebars over easy enough on a road bike but that would be impossible on a cargo bike and panniers would have to be removed if touring.

After passing under the railway bridge at the far end of the Deep Sinking near Hansfield, I took to the quiet roads as far as Confey as I wasn't sure how rough or muddy the towpath would be. Went through the delightfully named Passifyoucan on the way.

At Kilcock I decided to head cross-country to Straffan before joining the Grand Canal at Ardclough and heading back home that way. In general, it seemed more boring than the Royal with long straight sections and fewer towns. Still a lot better than dodging traffic on the roads. A 74k round trip from Harts Corner in perfect conditions.

Did i see you near kilcock around fourish?

I came out the grand to Roberstown , across to Kilcock & home on the Royal- was a lovely, almost totally traffic free spin for me.

Perfect, thanks. I'm looking forward to it!

Yes, I would have been there around then. Rarely wear Boards gear anymore but it used to be a great way of recognising fellow Boardsies.

I cycled the canal to maynooth this morning. have a new toy so made a video of the deep sinking section which I think a lot of you are interested in. I was using 28s on my road bike. It is narrow but doable. I was taking it handy.

if you search youtube for deep sinking Royal canal you should find it.
