Might try and check out the USA game later they seem to have been surprisingly impressive.

On the highlights the goals seemed to based on pace / energy. Little was shown of Paraguay

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Was it just me or did Hugh Cahill take a leaf out of the Kenny Cunningham playbook for that USA game? Was full of smart ass comments, laughing away at his own hilarity. Seemed almost amateurish at times, never noticed him being that bad when doing rugby games...

I think if you're Dublin based(so they don't have to pay for a hotel) and played league of Ireland, along with maybe a brief spell in one of the lower leagues in England, then you have a good chance at getting on the panel. RTE more or less, with the odd exception, continue to operate their football coverage in lockdown mode, 5 plus years after COVID restrictions finished.

If they are so hard up on cash, they should either sublet their coverage, or share it with VMTV. Assuming VMT are interested. Even if RTE were in a better state, the expanded world cup is now too big for one broadcaster really.

Is it our own fault really putting RTE under so much scrutiny? Kicking up a fuss about what people were making and expecting RTE to balance the books.

In the grand scheme of things the money isn't huge when you look at overall tax intake, our national broadcaster should actually be able to push the boat out for big events like this and get in some serious names, instead of penny pinching.

We asked for it, and we got it.

100%, the whole rte “scandal” was a reassuring reminder that a lot of people in Ireland haven’t much to be worried about or are very susceptible to a drummed up media witch-hunt

RTE sports coverage is definitely not the calibre it once was and that's down to money at the end of the day. It was the best thing they used to do but it's hollowed out now.

I agree if that's not what the public wanted what did they expect? No point complaining.

Scrutiny was needed. Paying astronomical salaries to the likes of Tubridy, D'Arcy and Joe Duffy only reduced the money available for proper guests on their shows and reduced funding for the sports and culture departments. Having 300-400k salaried presenters with affectionate big perks interviewing D-list guests was an insult. All this is a bit off topic but it's related to what RTE can afford to pay analysts.

Looking forward to tonight's games. Predictions:

    Qatar 1 - 3 Switzerland

Brazil 1 - 1 Morocco (should ordinarily be a good game but I think neither team will be willing to go for it in this phase)

Haiti 1 - 2 Scotland (I think this might be a tougher game for Scotland than many expect but they should win)

    Australia 1 - 3 Turkey

VAR lads smiling for the cameras again

Not sure if that would take off in the PL

Is there any reason that games generally kick off a few minutes after their scheduled time or is it just an Americanism? I’ve seen NFL games doing similar.

I’m so used to seeing refs starting matches at exactly the correct kickoff time so I assume something must’ve happened if they haven’t kicked off!

Going 2-0 Swiss win, 2-1 Brazil win, 2-0 Scotland win, and 2-1 win for the Turks.

That would have spiced it up. Never looked set but thats terrible defending

Wasn't there a similar situation in USA 94 and the refs just started when they were told to wait for the nod that advertisers were ready from the TV network. I'm guessing that the networks are now controlling the kick off and it's delayed for that reason. This does happen for American Football games.

Makes sense, should’ve guessed it was about the advertisers!

Hot as fck out there (around 30 degrees) which is a little bit of an equaliser… not in terms of the Swiss winning, but maybe in terms of them not running up a big score. Could see 'em getting their lead and then conserving energy. Probably a rake of changes for the main lads after 60 minutes if they're ahead comfortably.

Christ that's some clatter for the keeper, crackin' his head on the lad's thigh… looks a real potential concussion one…

Qatar are very poor, along with South Africa so far it's showing why expanding the tournament was a bad idea
