Waking up to news this morning of a 17 year old girl stabbed in the neck in Burnley. Footage on Facebook, which I won't share, shows the attack and the attacker jumping and waving his arms like a lunatic after committing the act. Thankfully the girl is seen fleeing to safety although on top of the injuries she will be severely traumatised. A 30 year old man who is reported as an Afghan 'from the Burnley area' has been arrested.

Brazilian assassin found dead in a car in Limerick and an eastern European fella stabbed to death in Leitrim by a compatriot this week. The new normal I suppose.

Our media will be dedicating as few column inches as possible to both crimes. Run along now folks.

Propaganda, russian shills, anti EU bots, misinformation, click bait- so many buzzwords, so few statistics.

Speaking of misinformation, can you crunch the numbers from pavee point on Roma unemployment rates for us. Is pavee point an acceptable source nowadays?

Source: Pavee Point - Traveller and Roma Centre https://share.google/I9iU8s2coAUwQC2sD

Furthermore, the employment data showed that more than 83% of Roma surveyed were unemployed. Along with the high unemployment levels, Roma faced significant ..

NGOs are obviously a broad church, with some very useful and excellent and some who seem to exist for the sake of existing. There is government and EU funding for some areas where NGOs operate, so it goes without saying that you will see some entering the sphere as an easy way to make money rather for any great idealogical or humanitarian reason. People have every right to criticise specific NGOs, although I agree just giving about 'NGOs' in general is nonsensical.

In my case, I am appalled that the NGO 'THE IRISH HUMAN Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC)' is objecting that provisions in new housing legislation that would require social housing applicants to prove they are legally and habitually resident in Ireland. https://www.thejournal.ie/social-housing-legally-resident-ireland-ihrec-7067007-Jun2026/

We are in the midst of a housing crisis, of course scarce and expensive social housing should only be provided to those legally resident in Ireland. No country on earth could function if they had to provide social housing to anyone who came into the country, legally or not.

This is an NGO funded by the Irish government, which is supposed to advocate for Irish human rights, which to most people should focus on people legally resident in Ireland. Yet they are objecting to legislation that allows the government to properly focus needs and resources on those who are legitimately deserving.

Not only that but then an elected TD is saying in the Dail that this legislation is pandering to the far right. https://www.thejournal.ie/social-housing-law-7068051-Jun2026/ There is nothing far right about ensuring housing supports go to legal residents (which would include Irish born people and people who legally immigrated to Ireland who are deserving). It is normal fiscal practise to do so.

The Irish government itself has characterised that 80-90% of asylum seekers are economic migrants abusing the system. Closing off loopholes were people not legally resident in Ireland, who are chancers abusing the International asylum system for their own gain, is not right wing. It is actually fair and just as it allows the system to function for those who deserve it, need it and are eligible to it.

This kind of nonsense is what people are referring to when they say they are annoyed at NGOs and the 'left'.

“Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”

The problem is, the more visible NGO are the ones where Irish people have the biggest concerns and they are actively campaigning against the Irish people in their own country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,785 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I think the real problem is the violent right wing thugs who wave my beautiful countries flag about as if I'm part of their cult of tin foil hats. Say what you want about the leftists but they are generally peaceful when they protest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,383 ✭✭✭Paddy_Mag

If the left weren't so hell bent on ruining the country then the far right wouldnt be a problem.

Hold on, the rich people want poor people from abroad to do jobs that they are unwilling to pay the local population properly to do.

The Swiss government, all other major parties, business leaders and trade unions have dubbed the proposal a "chaos initiative", arguing it will deprive hospitals and hotels of much needed staff, and damage hard-won relations with the European Union, leaving non-EU member Switzerland isolated in a very risky world.

    So sick of the framing.

    That is dreadful.

There are over 50,000 knife crimes a year in the UK which equates to over 137 per day!

    They are all terrible.

Why did you pick this one to comment on?

Who "reported" that the man who has been arrested was Afghan?

Does it make you think that perhaps immigrants from Afghanistan are more likely to commit a knife-crime?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,037 ✭✭✭✭walshb

maybe people see it much more easily and logically.. like why are immigrants over here (in this case the UK) commiting knife crimes. Eff off back to your own country and commit all the knife crime you want. Maybe people are fed up importing immigrants who are bad apples!! And fed up with some people deflecting and excusing

Glad you give a brief mention in that post to the good that NGOs do.

Criticize specifically like you have done for certain things fair enough .

However the poster I called out was criticizing Depaul which is akin to slating the Irish Cancer Society in most houses in this country .

No breakdown ,dumped a brief ill thought out comment and a link that is biased and away

    Rage bait .

I appreciate your considered view on IHREC because in this and others on the left I disagree with their statements on the new EU Migration pact in general .

They are a human rights organisation. It is their job to highlight anything they feel causes legal or moral issues and to research and lobby for change

That is their brief , why they exist. We have had many instances in the past where overeager ministers were rushing headlong into practices that would have gotten us into hot water legally that have been stopped because of their intervention.

They are not here to advocate for the ordinary tax payer in Ireland , they exist to ensure that all people here are treated fairly , equally and with dignity and compassion ,Irish or not , citizen or not . Those who are vulnerable,, who have no voice .

Of course Asylum seekers fall within that brief .

While I think the new pact is a vast improvement on the Dublin Rules and disagree with IHREC and some on the left for coming out so much against it , I do think that some of the provisions are very draconian .

In this Act , detention, hubs and fingerprinting children are a minefield and need very careful handling . The positives are the provision for speedier processing and deportation of unsuccessful applicants . Also Ireland as a country under pressure will receive more money for this than it pays out for refusing IPAS .

I am glad the organisation exists however and think Ireland is a better place thanks to the input of many of the NGOs in the last 20 years or so. We , in the past had few places and people to go to if we needed a voice to lobby government . People have social media and are better educated on the whole here now and think they can handle it all themselves , maybe they can . But most people who do take on government do so with the professional aid of many NGOs .

St Vincent de Paul of course was always there fighting for people in poverty and ensuring people had clothes on their backs and food in the cupboard . Now with housing . And holding the government to account.

There are some who could be struck off for the work they don't do , I agree , but not the majority .

That's simplified enough for a 5 year old to understand.

The adults in the room will also consider many other factors like

why are people abandoning their own homes, communities and countries to come and live here?

why have the drug gangs got such a foothold in society?

why have certain areas become so unsafe?

why are horrendous crimes against women so commonplace now?

Answering or countering argument with "what about " like this post above .

Why should I crunch those numbers or even be asked that just because I object to posts with misinformation?

Do you not know my opinion on EU migrants who don't work , enricoh ?

Of course you don't read my posts or anyone's who you perceive to be on the "opposing side " .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,037 ✭✭✭✭walshb

yes, and plenty adults will ask why is it our concern/problem why people from 1000s a miles away are coming all the way here because of issues where they’re from. Sort your issues!! We have our own issues!!!!

Despite the so called checks you claim are 100% they still come claim asylum no documents . How is that not part of the discussion , next you will say its off topic .

Nations will send the worst disfunctional asylum cases .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,177 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

Yeah every country including ours has plenty of home grown scumbags.

It doesn't mean we should be importing more from elsewhere.

As for Afghanistan, its basically gone back in time by 1000 years since the Taliban took over so no way should any man from that country be let into Europe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,030 ✭✭✭rgossip30

The post and link claimed those countries were growing economically and not basket cases .

Also we need to encourage assimilation, not grievance based identity politics. I dont want to see US style bloc-voting, which turns every election into a competition of grievances in Left and Right.

I think social media tracks should be admissible in applications for work permits and citizenship. If someone has been expressing Jihadist views online for example, that should be a disqualifier. Quite often when terrorist attacks have happened elsewhere, it turns out signs of radicalisation were missed.

Note I don't consider support for Palestine that opposes Hamas to be Jihadism. Palestine is occupied by Israel and a two state solution is needed.

    Behind a paywall ?

Again ....sigh ...you raised the issue so the onus is on you to provide facts and figures to back up your bias statement .

This just time wasting from you . Either post proper links or not , won't be paying much heed unless you do

Because they haven't been tracked online ? Police track jihadist conversations in anti terrorism units . Not general population or not racist profiling which is what you appear to be suggesting .

You are veering more and more towards redlines here .
