You presumably mean the film, Stop Making Sense? Or a tribute band?

Was at Dogstar on Thursday. My wife had seen them in London 30 years ago, a few years before we met, and plays their first album fairly regularly so I got tickets for her tbh.

Wasn't sure what to expect but they were fairly tight and he's a good bass player but the songs started to blend together after a while. I don't go to as many gigs as I used to so it always surprises me at the amount phone fuckwittery going on. It's gone beyond to videoing a show, we were sitting in the circle and the woman beside me spent the whole show having a WhatsApp messaging session.

Then on to Something Happens in the NCH last night who were running through their first two albums with a few covers thrown in so we knew what to expect. Onstage for about 1hr40mins, we had a great night and everyone left with a smile on their face. Tom told some good stories throughout the night, pure nostalgia but that's fine sometimes. I actually felt like one of the younger people there, but the night was capped with a young lady offering me her seat on the bus home because there were no seats left. God I feel old!

I was thinking the very same, no way could Talking Heads actually be playing shows because I would’ve heard about it!

The poster means Stop Making Sense not an actual Talking Heads show:
    https://www.facebook.com/PavilionTheatreDL/photos/-on-sale-stop-making-sense-a-40th-anniversary-screening-of-the-greatest-concert-/1391624082996855/?set=a.559649539527651&http_ref=eyJ0cyI6MTc4MTM1MTY2NzAwMCwiciI6Imh0dHBzOlwvXC93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbVwvIn0%3D

I’ve seen that concert movie a few times, it’s definitely one of the greatest ever.

Tongue was firmly in cheek. Yeah it was Stop Making Sense. Definitely worth seeing in a cinema environment though

Cheers, my comment was more of a nudge to the original poster to cop on and not mislead folk who might not know the real story. At least 50k people would've been waiting and doing anything for a ticket if a Talking Heads gig were happening. Unfortunately there is zero chance, although seeing David Byrne in Ireland this year do around 10 of the Heads songs lessens the pain of never seeing the band back in the day or ever. I was a college student when the film came out, and along with most of my peers we saw that film at least a dozen times, often dancing along in the aisles of the Ambassador. When the video (on big cassette) came out it was regularly played at parties. A true classic that never dates.

Brilliant show by Nick Cave and the bad seeds last Wednesday in Malahide. Timings we're very accurate but can't complain, €90 well spent

Enjoyed what i heard of Bleech 9:3 but was indifferent to LYKEE LI and feel it didnt fit the vibe of the night. First time seeing Nick Cave and what a showman he is, backed by amazing musicians/singers. Will definitely see him again when he returns to the 3Arena in the near future

Something a bit different last night and a very enjoyable night with The Bluetones acoustic in Bank Lane Waterford. Amazing voice by such an underrated band of the britpop era.

Next up Metallica in Aviva next Friday 🤘

Weird experience last night when I went to see The Deadlians in Bohs FC Mono’s Bar.
The event was organised as an Anti Fascist Gig but some of the organisations involved were new to me - Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice (Sharp) and Irish Republican Skinheads and Always Anti-Fascist.

Who would have thought you’d have skinheads, punks and members of the LGBTQ+ community all moshing together.

The Cork Concert Orchestra at Cork City Hall

A brilliant two hours of primarily John Williams and Hans Zimmer film scores with a sprinkling of scores from the likes of Hamnet (not my type of movie but the score sounds beautiful so I will check out the rest of the score), Platoon, The Godfather, and James Bond.

Only slight disappointment is the Ennio Morricone score they went with. I really wanted a spaghetti western.

Couldn't fault it for €34 and hopefully they will considering doing it again.

Yeah I'm sure loads of people genuinely thought that the Talking Heads played their first show in 35+ years in the Pavilion in Dun Laoghaire the other night and no one knew about it

This place gets all kinds of visitors. You'd be surprised how many people have only a vague idea of who Talking Heads are, Psycho Killer is about the extent of it. Leaving that aside, your post wasn't even that witty for those of us who do know.

A great nights entertainment, the orchestra were simply brilliant. The setlist was hit after hit, no filler.

Possibly the best value for 28 euro I've spent in years.

The song from Hamnet is actually a 2004 piece by Max Richter, On the Nature of Daylight.

Its been in lots of films over the years, Arrival probably the most famous, I was saying to myself I know the piece but hadnt seen Hamnet and there was some outrageous plagiarism going on. 😄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,296 ✭✭✭✭Tauriel

Damn, I had heard of the piece before but I assumed that it was because of the Hamnet adverts or when Jessie Buckley won the Oscar (I also have not seen that movie), but after searching there, based on your comment, I see that in addition to Arrival, I have seen Togo and The Last of Us, so definitely heard it from those 3 sources.

In fairness, it's a great piece so can't blame the guy from using it time and again. Just like Zimmer reusing parts of Gladiator for Pirates of the Caribbean.

    All good music 👍

It's a bit of a cheat code now. First time I heard it was Arrival and I found it really affecting but it's been diminishing returns ever since and now I find myself nearly rolling my eyes if it's played over an emotional scene in a new movie or TV show. Just feels a bit lazy.

I was involved in the CCO concert last night and it’s really, really lovely to hear such positive feedback for what is an amateur, project based orchestra (albeit a very committed and hardworking one!). We had an absolute ball with this music and I’m so glad to hear that people enjoyed it.

We must have been following each other around - was at Nick Cave and The Bluetones.

Nick Cave was superb. His live shows are a bit like a religious experience.

Really enjoyed the Bluetones as well. Mark Morris' voice has held up surprisingly well. Was very engaging as well in such an intimate setting and his generally self deprecating banter was very enjoyable.

Was at The Bluetones in Dundalk. Really enjoyable gig. Mark is a witty guy and really suits the intimate nature of the show.

Looking forward to the full band show in Belfast later in the year. Saw them there last year for the first time in about 30 years and it was excellent. Some top tunes back in the day.

Was at the Bluetones in Kilkenny last night. I'd say only half sold. Cleeres Theatre is such a great venue for an intimate gig. Really enjoyable gig too, Mark has a great voice and hearing the songs in acoustic was a treat.

Will see them in Whelans later in the year with the full band.

The CCO sounded anything but amateur, honestly, it was superb, very professional, and I really hope ye do something again!

I have seen Hans Zimmer himself on a number of occasions and hate how over heavily produced his live performances are becoming. I am a person that prefers to listen to the classical instruments for film scores over their electric version. So what I am saying is that I found the CCO to be better than the real thing!

Btw, this year is the 25th anniversary of the release of the The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring movie, if ye are looking for some inspiration for your next performance 😉😁

Zimmers last show in Dublin was a mess.

The sound was way too loud and the mix was poor, bass and drums overpowered everything, it was ear shattering. I've no idea what they were thinking with the sound.

I didn't see any amplification at the concert on Saturday night. The sound was just right, not too loud, crystal clear.

I was mesmerised at some of the songs, to appreciate them being played by an 80 piece orchestra is just something one can only experience in the flesh.

I think he's trying too hard to be a rock star. And what I found particularly disappointing about his shows last December, was that there appeared to be a lot less musicians on stage compared to prior years. I've also noticed a bit of an exodus of some of his old faithful musicians.

I actually prefer the The World of Hans Zimmer, that's the show that is curated by him but he's not there, it's a full orchestra and his right hand man as conductor (who happens to be Irish). I am going to see that again in October in the 3Arena and looking forward to not being blasted out of it.

I think orchestras are just so much more capable of capturing the emotional moments that these compositions are trying to convey, whether that be sadness, anger, joy, fear, etc. It's hard not to be moved.

Free ticket for Kasabian from some resident lottery. I saw them live 21 years ago in Spain. Wasn't bothered going but it's a 10 min walk from home. Anyway absolutely brilliant show. Great band. Great venue too first time. Shame the lineup for the tent is so poor this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,250 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

I was there and I didn't think they were great. Saw them a few years ago in the Olympia and the place was bouncing.

Went to see them in the 3 arena in 2024 and again they were amazing. I just thought last night they were a bit flat. Their new stuff doesn't really hit live and it feels like they are just going through the motions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭Luxembourgo

They are a fun band, but yeah the new stuff just isn't as good, and think the set ordering was a bit off last night.

I also just don't like Serge as a front man at all, but that's just a personal opinion.

All in all a decent gig

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,250 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

    Good points.

Serge isn't a great front man and definitely the set order seemed wrong.

Can't really put my finger on it, but it just didn't hit last night.

    Kasabian in Fairview Park

Where we were the crowd were loving it . Everybody moving ,crouching and jumping when Serge told them to. He looked a bit nervous starting off and wired but settled in quickly .

Around us people were singing every word .

They did play some new stuff but we very much enjoyed the gig . A real 90s techno vibe and the band looked very happy .

Mind you I am not a true fan just went with family who loved every bit and said would go again . So maybe some had different / higher expectations ?

Shout out to Miles Kane supporting . Great singer, jangling guitars , loved it . Would go see him on his own if he was playing
